Twitchy? Kiting?

Coming from an old-school MMO player:  Does Defiance require twitchy gameplay?  Is kiting necessary?

Thanks!

Eh... not exactly... its more alone the lines of an action combat type game though so its a lot more active, having to aim and perhaps to some degree 'kite'. Its not a point and click game and its a bit more active then a game say like Guildwars 2 but its not full on 'shooter twitch' happy so to speak.

maybe im an idiot but no matter how much i read about twitch gameplay i dont see the difference between twitch and a normal shooter (you aim and shoot in both). Defiance's aiming Is like a normal shooter, like every other shooter.

As for kiting, you can kite a boss if he tries to melee you but its not really necessary unless you keep dying in close combat (against the boss). But they dont usually chase you every time. They flank you, throw grenades to get you out of cover, etc. I only had to kite the very last boss on the main storyline (while still in alpha)

Okie dokie.  I guess this video put me off a little bit.  It looks like GW2 hyper-mode.

Its a shooter. It plays like CoD, Halo, etc. Nothing like GW2 or any other RPG. Theres not so much kiting as there is dodging. You can kite to an extent, but more useful in most cases is just dodging the large attacks and then unloading a clip in them before the next one.

Also, getting crits can be very important. To do that, you need to handle different mobs in different ways throughout the game. Like humanoid mobs, you can generally just shoot them in the head and it is a crit. Othe rtypes like the hellbug warriors have 2 crit spots, 1 which is in the ass, the other which is right in the mouth when they open it for various things and the mouth does tons more damage than the ass crits. Then you have the scrapper (robot) type mobs that have several variations. Some will charge at you and you can land decent crits on specific areas, and doing it enough will expose other areas (liek the power sourc eon their backs) to even more powerful crits. Then you have types that cant be crit at all until they transform into a different form and you have a small window to land crits before they switch back.

So depending on what youre fighting you need to use slightly different tactics. For some, kiting is good, for others youre better off letting them get close so they open themselves up to crits.

It's an entirely different game than GW2 - Defiance is a third person shooter. You run around, shoot stuff with guns.

The skill comes down to movement/dodge and ability to aim at vulnerable spots on enemies.

There is no kiting, there's a lot of knowing when to run  and hide, and what attacks to AVOID at all cost on big bosses and bigger baddies.

    Completely different gameplay than GW2.

I disagree. Running around is exactly the same thing as "kiting" and that's what you do in GW2 for the most of time as well as in Defiance, and the rolling (dodge) is the same as in GW2.

Bro, its a shooter RPG like Borderland just with a game world to play in.

its not a MMO. That's where the confusion is coming from. Developers said its not a MMO for a reason.

its a RPG like Borderland and a shooter like it as well.  Nothing more than that. If you like shooter with adventure like (arguably Metroid Prime is) you may like this game.

If you mean a certain level of finesse when playing the game.. then yes.... it's a shooter but with limited stats. Yes your weapon does a certain range and type of damage. But you must evade attacks by strafing and rolling (esp from bombs). Yes you have skills that you can use tactically (like throwing granades or use your special skill and abilities - yes there's character advancement using the EGO system). There's no class system but you can build your character to function differently depending on various playstyle which depends on your skill build and weapons equipped.
