Sure, I might agree with that, but people are already pre-ordering. I would prefer to know if the game looks halfway decent before I plunk money down on it. People don't usually pay to see a movie 6 months in advance. You're right though, it's unfair to compare games before they're out. Then again, that won't ever stop people from doing it.
I just looked at Amazon's policy, and they said they don't actually charge you until it ships, and you are free to cancel anytime prior to that.

Anyone can make a polished video from alpha. It just takes a little time! It's not an accomplishment! They aren't being more open with you, they are simply using another marketing approach.

While I wasn't that impressed with the short, blurry video I saw (obviously), I want to see how melee works before I even begin to write the game off. I'm not really a ranged player by nature.

He might be lying but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. The stiff animations, clunky looking movement, the investment of hype, spending probably millions on making a 5 minute cgi trailer just for the beta announcement. Showing pretty much no gameplay besides few second fly throughs of cities/zones. No talk on any sort of innovation. This is a greedy company trying to milk their IP without wanting to take any risks to actually make a good, innovative game.
Will it be as bad as SWTOR? Probably can't get worse, but I have very low expectations.

SWTOR was actually a great game until you got to the end, and crickets...
Despite that it still has a huge fanbase, and tons of subs.
PS: A CGI video doesn't cost millions. The game designers, who are already being paid, made it, and since its being hosted on their websites then the advertising cost is minimal.
SWTOR was one of the biggest failures in the history of the genre, they made WoW and slapped on "story" which mostly consisted of boring filler quests with v/o. They tried to copy wow and couldn't even get that right, it was the most clunky game i've ever played, worse than even the most unheard of low budget f2p games.
PS: You'd be surprised how much a CGI trailer costs, do you really think they paid under a million to make a trailer of that quality and length? Not to mention all the websites they paid to host the video on.
Just watched the vids from the links posted earlier. Seems perfectly safe to watch, no scripts whatsoever (on firefox at least).
Can anybody explain what I am supposed to be getting from these vids? Some people act very dissapointed, but I can barely see anything in these vids that anybody could give any substantial criticism on. Not a follower of this game though, so thats why I'm asking.
They already have the software. They already have the video graphics experts. That video didn't cost anywhere near 1 m, and they pay those website like a nickel a click.

You can up the quality to HD and it helps some. I didn't see that at first.

So many games have flopped and so many lies have been told that it's something to automatically expect now. This will keep happening until someone makes a game who isn't only in it for the money.
