A press demo, I linked to in the forums, spends a good amount of time showing off player housing. It is pretty extensive and may answer some questions here.

There is nothing social about a house though, unless you are one of those that watch the fashion network. I have been in a couple guilds over the years, been to several guild meets, been a part of several pnp games, larp groups, and am currently in a pirate troop. Never in a game have I ever held a "meet up" in a place (unless you want to count Kargath back in the day before heading out to Black Mountain) but guild meetings? I hang out with a lot of people from various walks of life, I have never been like "hey dude, can I come over and see how you have decorated your house?". Its just creepy.

The plugs that offer functional services were also indicated to have cooldowns on use so they strike me more as a convenience for when you don't have much time.

Path of least resistance. Anything that gets me more faster, or in a way where I do not have to compete with others is huge.

At the end of the day though you're not being forced to do anything; if you don't like housing then just don't play the game. Like I said there are very very few games with decent housing systems which means you have plenty of other options whilst we have very few.

UO, AO, EQ2, SL, Lotro, Rift. Seems like you have options. Though your "LEAVE MY GAME ALONE!" is cute. And hell, that list is just quick off the top of my head. I am sure if I hit up a list there are dozens more. I mean SWG emu is not even on the list, and last I checked its still up. In terms of time vs effort, it looks like its something I will have to use, which is the biggest part of my annoyance, just like Fishing in a number of games. Like I said though, I would not have a huge problem with it (other than the possible emptying of cities) if it did not incentivize it so much that I gain power that I cannot get elsewhere.

    Yup.  I second that.

I was going to come to this thread and ask what the big deal is about character housing.  As I really do not see what the big attraction is.

I watched the video and answered my own question.  Thier idea for the player housing system actaully sounds like something I would invest time/resources into if i was into pve/crafting.

The raid portal......I just heard the moaning satisfaction of the worlds pve'ers.

I love the idea of housing, but I've almost never been really impressed by a housing system in an MMO. I think I'm of two minds: On the one hand, I really like the idea of non-instanced houses... On the other hand, in SWG the shanty-towns-as-cities syndrome really turned me off.

The systems built around housing in WildStar seems fun, so even if it's all instanced, I think I can do with that (especially having seen how good a job Rift has done with its instanced housing).

By the way, are we absolutely sure the houses will be wholly (exteriors as well as interiors) instanced? People seem to think that's the case, but do we have a definitive "yes" from the developers? Or is it indeed possible that the interiors are instanced while the exteriors have some other sort of permission system? (not likely, but still...)

my point was that excesses features in housing pull players out of the game world.  we are in agreement, unless i am mistaken.  a few years back, i was in a champions online guild that held a meeting in the main city hub, 50+ of us standing there, lots of other players stopping to look, got some new members, an impromptu costume contest.  never would have happened if we were all hidden away in some guild hall.

now, if we could take over some plot in the game world, and call it our own, that would be a different story.

In short yes. The question is asked in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtl_tBRPWDU towards the end.

There will be a permissions system to let friends, guildies, the public on to your island (which is an instance; other islands in the background are just props) and to allow them to interact with it (i.e. harvest reasources for you, help you fight off mobs, use your raid portal for a buff).

Yeah, you and everyone else. Where exactly do you imagine all this free (and not in the middle of no where) land is going to come from?

it doent have to be a lot of open land.

a keep, or tower, or small area that we could take over and have to defend would suffice. have a few throughout the game world, maybe a couple in each zone?

limited amounts of available land would cause competition.. and perhaps, meaningful open world pvp.

Gotcha. I misunderstood what you were saying. One of the common arguments for housing being social is the ability to visit other peoples houses, hold gatherings and generally throw parties. Its pretty annoying.

Its not instanced, at least the physical house isn't.  The interiors may be.  But the reason they have made it so your house can use thrusters and float in the air to make is to make space.

Unless this changed in the past month, that statement is not correct.  The houses on other islands are just background eye candy.

    Community Questions Answered

Prior to Arkship 2013, we asked the WildStar community to compile a list of questions they were burning to have answered. The questions spanned across all aspects of the game and while the event was under the auspices of a Non-Disclosure Agreement, we worked to collect those answers.

And today, Carbine Studios have verified that you can have some of those answers you have been seeking! So, with no little amount of joy I bring you some answers to your questions from inside Arkship 2013.

    Housing
Is housing instanced? And exactly how are there house battle zones going to work?
Housing is instanced. The War Plot system is the “housing” battle system.

Is housing mobile? Will it be like UO where certain spots were coveted for being near good mining?
    Housing is instanced.

Can I attack someone else’s house?
    Not currently.

What kinda of stuff can we add to our houses ?
All the things - even functional items.

Thank you, that's the interview I was looking for. Like you said, unless they've changed it, which I doubt they will, it's instanced.

    Its instanced so it sucks.

Looked so good its too bad when these companys make one good decision they always destroy it with a stupid one like instanced housing.

Looks awesome. I loved the guild houses in Daoc and every year in EQ2 ppl would put on some truly epic haunted houses that you could port to and play through.

More importantly, I'm glad to see a modern game that takes the time to invest in some fluff perks for the players. Every game that releases nowadays tries to get away with just the bare minimum in features and, if by some miracle they take the time to code in something extra that's not related to progression content, they expect you to pay real money for it. A game that takes the steps WildStar has made to support its community this way is a truly welcome change.

It looks AMAZING .. love the style ...

But i sure hope this would leave the cities deserted coz that would be extremely lame

Well guess I've been spoiled by Rift's sandboxy housing. This has too much pre-fab for me.
