Should I start playing WoW?

nertholnerthol Member UncommonPosts: 5
I need some help to decide whether or not I should start playing WoW. 100% of the sites I visited had WoW on the top 3, and almost always was the 1st place on the list. Plus it has a huge player base, and most of them seem pleased with the game. I also have friends who play for a long time and encourage me to play. My doubt is: Is it really worth it? I mean the game is old, not that it's a bad thing, but I think it might be a bit late to start WoW. The other thing is, there are lots and lots of other MMO's out there, F2P, B2P, Subs, and I want to know if there are any out there with the overall quality of WoW.

MMO's I played and loved: LoTRo

Well, it's something you have to decide for yourself. However, I only started playing a few weeks ago, and it's amazing. Leveling is very smooth, and there is just a lot to do. You're not too late to the party, just make sure you're on a busy server (or on the same server as your friends). If you want, I can recruit you as a 'friend' which will be beneficial to the both of us. Anyway, in my opinion you should at least try it out!

Honestly, if you haven't tried it, you should.  Get to 90 or whatever and check out the game.  You can raid with other pugs.  It's super casual.  You'll prolly enjoy it.

But like any toy, it does get old eventually.

If you've never tried it then you should.. if you like MMOs. Most people who don't like WoW only dislike it because they played it for years.. if you play anything for years you'll get fed up of it. Or simply because they don't like change, due to all it's changes. If you never knew the old way though, the changes seem common place to you and it won't affect you.

Play free to level 20 and make up your own mind.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

its never too late to start any mmo

in most "gear treadmill" mmos - expansions or patches invalidate existing gear

you can re-gear with everyone else ;)

Make sure you go on a popular server.. and not one of those "new player" servers.

Forgetting about population, there is also messed up auction houses on them and stuff like that. As many things are over or under priced. Best to start with a decent ingame economy, it favors new players. Lower level stuff sells for more (you can make more money while leveling up), higher level stuff sells for less.

Make sure it's popular for your faction choice as well. Many 'High' population servers might be 90% Alliance.. which is no good if you want to play Horde.

This site will let you know what you need to know:

    http://wow.realmpop.com/

Such as, right now, Stormrage is the highest populated Alliance US server. 141k Alliance players. If you wanted to play Horde, that server only has 15k Horde players, you wouldn't want that one... you'd want Thrall or Area 52.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Don't stick with wow. There are way better MMO's that are going to be released this year. MMO's that have a lot of focus on skill based combat and have better graphics, WoW is now just a generic piece of junk that has many clones of it. If you want a game that has a similar graphics style to WoW but better graphics, check out WildStar Online, I think it has some WoW devs former blizzard employees working on it. It has skill based gameplay. You can buy a house, own a "War Plot" which is a fortress, has a storyline with cinematics, 5 classes each with 2 roles, Raids, Dungeons, PVP Battlegrounds, it looks like what WoW should have been.

Also check out Elder Scrolls Online, Firefall and Defiance.

I just left lotro to give wow another shot. I haven't played in a couple of years. I am enjoying myself. Took a while to get used to but it is fun and that is what matters. I will be 90 in a couple of days from there we will see if it holds my interest

It is a bad MMO with outdated graphics and mechanics. There are so many MMOs out there. Some are free to play others just buy to play.

You can check out Tera or SWTOR for free.

Rift and GW2 are fantasy-MMOs, that do many things so much better than WoW.

If you want to try something different, take TSW.

WoW still has many players, but that has something to do with the way they count them especially in China. Those who stay in WoW, only do that because of all their old friends in their guilds.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

If you like PvE/themeparks, WoW is the most polished and content rich, and is highly casual friendly and hardcore alike.

PvP, though highly competitive with tournaments and world rankings etc,  is a CC fest...

hate to say it but damn, wow is still the king! go for it and you will not regret it.

playing since short after release and stopped some months ago. now i m back  with a 7 days free voucher and you know what? imo, its the best wow ever. i wont sit and say why, but after my passing from warhammer, rift, aoc, swtor, tera, gw2 i can say that still remains the best thing in the market ( except maybe eve ^^ ). i would sub again until archeage or wildstar comes out, thats for sure.

I hope WildStar will be better then WoW, it is similar to WoW in terms of graphics only  they are better and it is action based gameplay with things like player housing and fortresses for your guild in the game world.  All things WoW does not have and will never have.

    No.

    Why:

Daily's and then some more Daily's hamster wheel, farmville, battle pets pokemon. Paying a sub for so many single player elements. Yes they can be teamed up in for the battle pets and Daily's but they are mostly designed for single player. Not going to pay for that.

Lord of the Rings online is F2P and you are forced to socialise with other players and just team up now and again theres a LFD tool too, which is good when it pays off, believe me.  And it's free. And you can smoke (pipe) weed and play mad tunes on lutes all day. I also don't feel forced to play often because I'm not paying a sub. Can dip in now and again and diverse elsewhere too.

I left WoW after 5.2 was launched. Feels good. No more beeping daily's.

That is why I said NO in your poll, OP. Peace.

Check the feature list, check some videos of the game, do some digging at few random fansites, then decide for your self. Seriously, what value has a "yes or no" answer from some completely random people on internet who most likely are just haters or fanboys anyway, with opinions of their own, and no idea of what your gaming preferences are. I could just toss a coin and pick yes or no.

It's a bad MMORPG with outdated graphics and mechanics, really? I bet you haven't played since a long time. Graphics are subjective, but tell me, how are the mechanics 'outdated' if all new AAA MMORPGs copy them? And the silly thing is, WoW still has better 'outdated' mechanics almost 10 years after release. All those MMORPGs are out there going f2p because they are sooooo much better right? And why does the popularity of a game bugs you so much? Even if there was one popular server, that's enough right? Because that's what most other MMORPGs have. WoW has numerous popular servers 10 years after release, so it's logical they have a steady but slow decline.

I bet you (and many others) haven't touched the game for years because I just started playing WoW around one month ago and it's nothing like most people wish to believe it is here on MMORPG.com.

if he don't touched the game for years kudos for him, he finally moved on a lame game, don't know why wow players defend the damn thing taht fiercely, ok lets say tehn every MMO after wow copied his mechanics (with was copied from other games) tehn I don't see a reason to play a game with outdated graphics and content.

    want games with diferent mechanics?

try age of wushu, GW2, EVE, Ultima Online, TSW, Defiance will launch soon hell even the more not so good fallenearth, several games are out with better graphics and mechanics and overall feeling for the game, if you want to stick around wow, its ok, but don't try to push garbage to others just because you are afraid your game close down

also rift is like wow and did better,

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

First of all, I don't try to push garbage to others, because simply put, WoW is not garbage. There is a difference between garbage and disliking a game, you sound very bitter. People are free to play whatever they want. I don't care if people want to play the game I play, or not. But saying a game is bad and then offering games with the same mechanics is just silly.

And I am afraid 'my' game will be closed down? Really. I'm afraid WoW will be shut down? And Rift did better? In terms of what? My my... I have a subscription for both, and I respect Rift. But you're pretty funny.

I know there are games with different mechanics, but the OP was asking for WoW right? So I tell him my experience with WoW.
