General: Outside the Box: New Torment Game Funds in Just 6 Hours

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Fans of Planescape: Torment have come out in droves to support inXile Entertainment's Torment: Tides of Numenera, a new story-driven RPG based on the Torment universe. The KickStarter project raised over $900,000 in just six hours.

Our heads are still spinning at the incredible response we have had from today's support of our Kickstarter campaign. We had plans to roll out our stretch goals and to write our Kickstarter updates but never in our wildest dreams did we think we would fund this quickly!!! We are joyfully scrambling right now to get a longer update and some stretch goals in front of you as soon as we can. We should have more to say later today.

You are all unbelievably awesome and we could not be happier about receiving your trust in us. For many years we have wanted to get back to making this style of RPG but it appeared that the market was going everywhere but that direction. Almost every article and new game was focused on being an MMO, multi-player or micro-transition based. This wasn’t our style and we couldn’t generate interest in the classical narrative type of RPG that we all grew up making and playing. Thank you for backing our vision once again and we will not let you down. We will continue to communicate and and make sure we solicit input such that the game is hitting all the right notes.

You can still get involved on the Torment: Tides of Numenera's KickStarter page.

Planscape Torment is without a doubt one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure to play. I hope this game will live up to everyones expectations, which will be difficult, but I do believe they can.

Regardless, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

Was an instant-pledge for me. ANd no wonder, this being a spiritual successor to my favorite game of all time.

I still wish it was set in the Planescape Universe, but it's OK... I fully expect they do a good job with the new setting.

I love the setting for this. Reallly caught my imagination. Was watching the tabletop rpg video yesterday. Time to dust off the old Planescape cd's I think...................Now! Can anybody remember where I left them?

Never played the original, but judging from the quality I've seen from them for Wasteland 2 I'd say the game is in good hands. Plus Bard's Tale was fairly good as well. Now Hunted: The Demon's Forge on the other hand...errr... well, every company is going to produce a bad game once in a while.

So is this a single player rpg or non mmorpg?

I try playing the original, but I can't even identify what some things on the screen are supposed to be.  My eyes are just too used to graphics that resemble things.  But I backed this way back.... when it had only been up 3 hours.

It's not based on the Torment universe, Torment is not a D&D Campaign Setting.

It is based on the Planescape Campaign Setting.

So why didn't they use the same setting as Planescape:Torment? copyright issues?

new setting, dealing with the same issues as other torment

Ideas transcend setting. It is why it works for games like Bioshock. Try it with a game like bomberman and it won't work because the setting and mechanics are the game. Story driven games can benefit from a new setting. Just my two-cents.

Yes, couldn't get the license. The Numenera setting sounds like a good alternative.

To get money from gamers you simply have to promise a sequel or a "spiritual sequel" say it will be an old school game and you will be showered in money by nostalgic fans.

Actually, if you shift your paradigm a bit, hunted is not a bad game.

I view it like a better looking arcade game. In that light, with no additioinal expectations, it can be a lot of fun.

Ofc, when you say 'Torment Universe' you mean the Planescape Universe.

I want the game, but it seems a bit gubby tbh... cutting the owners of the real IP out of the loop money-wise.

Oh well, fingers crossed that it turns out well.
