What is Age of Wushu? (An FAQ)

Kasuke27Kasuke27 Member Posts: 22

I am an active AoW player with over a month of experience and a character ranked 87 on the leader boards. I play a Tangmen, an assasin class, named Anshi, feel free to contact me in game for help!

Here is the FAQ!

AGE OF WUSHU FAQ

Is this game a Sandbox?

In the long run... no, the majority of content is generated by developers.

Is it a themepark?

It certainly does not feel like one. Here is why, it may be a themepark but it's dressed in Sandbox clothing. It has many, many features and systems that you'd find in a sandbox which gives it that sort of sandox flavor.

Does it really have no classes?

Nope, it does. It has 8 martial arts schools. Cool news is you can learn skills from any school with enough time and patience. Hell some of the best skill sets are school indpendent.

WARNING: The class you choose will be your main, you will be able to fully level it's skills. Cross school skills have a max level penalty.

For more information on class specifics here is a link

http://ageofwushu.wikia.com/wiki/Schools

Are there levels?

Yes each school has an internal skill which raises your stats, every so often they add a new one, which is essentially raising the level cap. Currently the second internal is out. There are three atm in China.

Also skills are leveled from 1-5

Is it Pay to win?

It's suscribe to win. The cashshop gives no advantage that you can't get in game aside from looking like a sexy beast. The subscription benifts are very useful for keeping up with the best of the best but it's not required to play, the game will simply progress slower.

You can buy in game money how is that not pay to win?

It would be if the markets werent horribly inflated. Everyday I make 1 fully upgraded silver quality weapon, it nets me 600-1200 silver or if you bought that with real money 15-30 dollars.Sure some people will spend 1000's of dollars but they are an obvious minority as in there is only 1 person in game who has done that and they are a joke skill wise.

Is it a grind fest?

Nope, but craft grinding is the most reliable way to make money. You level passively over time and as long as you do some spy missions each week you'll never run out of exp to level skills.

How is the crafting?

Decent, most of it is getting the required ingrediants which will require dungeon running and farming/mining etc. From there you do mini-games to craft, the better you do the better chances of getting good gear.  Since upgrading/crafting is somewhat luck based it can take a crafter many attempts to get a weapon specifically good for a character.

For more crafting info look here.

http://ageofwushu.wikia.com/wiki/Manufacturing_Skills

Is gear improtant?

Yes, to a degree. Skill is the main key but it can give a sizable advantage if the gap is too extreme. If the Enemy is in fully upgraded gold gear and Myself in silver, the difference between our power will be slight.

To put it another way if you are an A+ player in okay gear fighting an A player in really great gear you'd be about even. It may not be essential but if you want that competitive edge it really helps.

How important are levels?

Very important, it's curcial to keep on leveling, put your resources towards leveling before gear, unless you see a good sale from a player or something.

Anything greater than a 6 level difference will be noticible in combat, especially if the other person is at max level in which they get a special bonus passive.

How is PvP, is it fun and balanced?

PvP is very fun and even PvE has PvP mixed in. It plays well and it's very player skill focused. The classes are well balanced and all classes shine in different way during combat. With each level cap raise the classes change so things may become more or less balanced. However you can learn other school's skills, so people usually learn the powerful "signature skills" from the 8 schools.

Though this is a very subjective topic.

WARNING: When using a skill all other skills not in that skill set will be given a 7 second global cooldown. This is to avoid spamming all the most powerful skills from every set.

Flying Skills what are those?

They are skills that allow you to do crazy dashes through the air, triple jumps, wall and water running. They  are usually gained by doing PvE dungeons and looting the scroll. The 3 basic ones are useful and cheap. The "goose step" Flying skill is crucial for competitve PvP as it is a ground dash and the manueverablity is key during 1v1 combat.

Is this game Solo friendly?

To be honest, no. It pays to work with others as you can only have one character. Guild can make the game far more enjoyable.

Did you say only one character?

Yes you only get one character, which can only learn 1 manufacture skill so choose wisely.

How is the PvE?

Aside from some starting school and life quests the game is focused on 2 sorts of dungeons.

Forbidden Instances and Jianghu Mini instances

Forbidden instances are the big dungeons with rare loot and have the best rewards. They have a weekly limit of 7 per week which I find hard to meet sometimes. The boss fights are fun and they have bosses that summon actual players to fight against you!

The other isntances are very short and are usually repeated multiple times. These drop occasionally good crafting recipes but mainly drop special martial arts scrolls that are independent from the 8 schools called Jianghu skills. Jianghu meaning World of Martial arts.

I personally Give it a B. If there wasnt the PvP in the PvE I'd Give it a C+.

What is Kidnapping?

When you log off your character it has a chance of remaining in the world doing work for NPC's and earning you silver. However you can be kidnapped in which the kidnapper will earn silver for selling you to an NPC.

What are the School Events?

Daily or weekly there are school events in which you can earn rewards, ranks and titles.

The most common reward is a school token which can be traded in to get internal skill books or other school items. The other rewards are titles and ranks.

The main daily event is spying and guarding. Each week you can get special mission that will give you teleport tokens to teleport to another scchool and steal information from the School Player NPC's. These missions give a decent amount of school tokens. Guarding is simply capturing other people spying on your school.

There are school wars where schools will ally with each other to steal the special school treasures from the other schools. When a school has more than 1 treasure all school member recieve a leveling/cultivation bonus.

Lastly there are school tournaments in which members of a school compete against each other to claim the few ranking positions for bragging right and control over what school wars will happen.

Silver and Silver Coin?

Silver is currency used between players and can be bought using real money, however the exchange rates are horrible.

Silver coin is used for NPC's and is essential in crafting.

Cultivation what is that?

After doing quests, missions and events, you will be awarded exp; however, exp is not usable at first.

After recieving experience it must be meditated upon or "converted" in order to be used to level your skills. The result of conversion are cultivation points which are used to "cultivate" or level skills.Conversion rates depend on the loaction you are in, how much exp you have, if you have taken any cultivation buff pills and many other factors you can learn about via guides on the Age of Wushu forums.

Simply put VIP's cultivate at the max rate by simply being VIP where as non VIP members must have all 6 exp types to cultivate at maximum.

Cultivation points are used passively to level skills, by paying silver or silver coins and by completing team practices. It is very easy to use up a days worth of cultivation so it is wise to put your resources into getting cultivation pills from players, or be a herbalist yourself and make your own cultivation pills.

1st there isnt any solid sandpark definition

creating stuff is just part of it

but there are also other parts like being free to do what You want not juat grind whole game or do quests from start to end

could You call these 8 classes then?

depends from skills some are 1-3 some are 1-6 clan basic skills are 1-7 and there are also 1-9 for few styles

market problem is just NA version coz ppl agree to buy overpricd items, it doesnt happen in any other version

its easy to run of exp if You do team practice and unbound silver training each day +lvl internal skills each day/ while game dont have grind, lvling will take a lot time, only similar would be 9D  as You need to lvl internal skills of each clan and in future each will have 10

items well depends from upgrades You have/ lets say i am beggar with 3rd internal at 36lvl I will have 160brawn which allows me to get 240 additional brawn from upgrades if I get that not only I will do a lot dmg but I will crit all time

not always, some internal skills are better then higher tier one, and not each got bonus at max lvl

mini instance drop quality depends from final score, later they are longer and harder

No there isn't a exact definition of a Sandbox however a key piece of a sand box is that the majority of things are player driven which is not the case in Age of Wushu. There are many player driven aspects but game progression is limited by the developers current in game content, thus I would not define it as a sandbox since it relies heavily on developers generating content. Freedom does not define a sandbox. If it is a "sandbox" then it really doesnt have a lot of sand to interact with.

Yes they are 8 classes, each school has a defined role in combat. Tangmen are debuff and DPS. Shoalin are Aoe Tank and damage. Beggars are a sturdy single target dps. Emei are support tanks. Wudang are burst damage tanks. Since there are penalties for cross school skills an emei will fill the role of support tank better than a tangmen with all the emei skills; However, it does allow each character to have flexibilty and fill missing spots if needed.

Generally speaking atm for the non initiated, skills have levels 1-5 in the future they will increase those caps.

Exp is very hard to run out of, Cultivation the thing you get after converting non-usable exp to "cultivation points" can run out easily if you arent staying on top of that or are a non VIP player.

Yes it's technically possible to get an insane amount of stats, however that is economically infeasible atm. In the future yes it may be an issue but for new people joing the game Silver upgraded gear is satisfactory. Not only would getting 240 brawn be insanely expensive it would also be ridiculous due to the uncertain nature of upgrades.

Yes the mini instances do drop varying on the success of the mission and they do become more difficult.

Some lowerer internals have good bonuses and are used situationally despite them being weaker this is true. However I have not heard of a school internal that doesnt have a max level bonus.

This wasnt supposed to be an in depth guide to Age of Wushu as it was to answer questions that people interested in the game could possibly have.

However you have brought up systems I havent answered about yet, like cultivaiton.

Very good FAQ. Just one thing.. Lets not pretend any serious player has only 1 character please. Multiboxing is not only common, the devs support it. Your "choose wisely" gave me a chuckle

From my experience and a guild survey I'd say maybe 15% of people "Multi-box" The problem is you can only have one main chracter, unless you can devote 16 hours a day to that character.  Farming and mining sure crafting I guess but end game all the quality gear requires lots of time to make and requires dungeons. Not to mention the bound silver required to run a crafter takes quite a lot of time. Gathering is easily multiboxed but the actual crafting takes lots of time.

You kinda create your own premise. I was a cold blooded kill, looking only to be more evil. I wanted to be most evil person on the server. I didn't make it there, but I became known

After I got sent to jail for 5 hours and yelled at a GM, I changed into a bandit. This killed 2 birds with one stone. I still got evil points plus XP pills, xp pills I needed badly at the time. I robbed everyone, every chance I got. I robbed so many people I began selling the pills. Wouldn't you know it, there was a market for them. I made a good 2.5D in a week of these pills. By this time I was infamous. I was charging people for free passage. I made A LOT of enemies.

Once the XP pill market dried up, I joined a guild. I became the escoter instead of the robber. I wanted to contribute to the guild growing and building.

As of this week, I just got heavy into the economy, well heavy for me. I want to see how much I can make. I won the bid on 3 world shops. One in the main city Chengdu, one in Shuz City, and one in a newb town. It's so competitive trying to get a shop since the space is limited. As it get closer to bid close time, fights start to break out.

It cost me a nice chunck of change for these shops. I spent today feeding them, with darts, silkworms, enchanting mats, xp pills, scripts, you name it. At the moment becoming rich is my premise.

    Who are you in-game?  Hemlock?

There are precious few people that I've seen attack me or the guild I'm in during escorts, and I sure as hell have NEVER paid anyone for passge.

One of the best parts of the game is that you make your own premise.  You do not need to move from quest hub to quest hub, or grind kill 10 x quests.

Currently in game I spend a lot of time crafting and accepting as many assassination missions as possible in between crafting stuff.  Assassination missions are when a boss calls for you to help wipe out some instance group.  If you win, the boss sends you some rewards in the mail, often times its not great but occasionally you get something really valuable.  It gets especially fun when a rather crappy group is trying to get buy a boss and keep failing.  If you are lucky the boss will keep hiring you as an assassin.
