IP's that could dethrone WoW...

MalacthMalacth LiverpoolPosts: 116Member

Mario.

Pokemon.

Harry Potter.

I can't think of anymore. List any you think might also join the list.

There are many other popular IP's (Star Wars, Warhammer, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Final Fantasy etc.) but none come close to how popular those three are in todays society.

But Nintendo refuses to make an MMO, and I can't see a Harry Potter MMO working, so in other words, only Blizzard will dethrone WoW (either with a new title, or just by slowly destorying WoW unintentionally, which would still take years.)

Edit; Just to clarify, I'm not saying only a game with a well known IP can dethrone WoW, I think a very well made game that plays well could easily do it. But in this thread I'm just asking what existing IP's you think could dethrone WoW.

But let's be honest, a good game with a well known IP will do much better than a good game with a new IP.

Look at Okami, probably the best PS2 game ever and one of the most critically acclaimed, and yet hardly anyone has heard of it. (Ico I'm looking at you too!)

Only Blizzard can kill WoW and you don't need a exsisting ip to make a great mmo.

    You answered your own query...

They really couldn't though. Because thinking the more popular IP alone would win is a false assumption.

Warcraft is NOT the most popular IP. And it was far less well known at the time WoW came out.

I could see Ultima Online 2 with a 2-300 million dollar budget, Raph Kostner and Richard Garriot back on the case making a strong dent in the market.

It blows my mind that this hasn't happened. Remaking Ultima Online with the right money, the right engine, and the right devs would be so epic it would be unbeleivable. I just do not understand.

I'm depressed just thinking about it. Tonight I've tried to play GW2, Tera, DDO, POE, D3, and WoW. I just can't stick with any of them anymore. I'm so tired of that bullshit model.

Almost any IP with a good enough game could. Do you really care that much if you adventure in Azeroth, middle earth, Fearun, the old world or whatever?

World of warcrafts strenght was never the IP, it is at best average. The Blizzard mark on the game is more important than the IP...

Wow is ageing and have been loosing players a long time, someone will dethrone it pretty soon and it is not really the IP that is most important there.

The new game needs to be well made, fun to play (for the average gamer) and easy enough so anyone can play it.

I don't play WoW anymore, but nothing is going to dethrone it. It's too entrenched and has too much broad appeal. The smart thing for MMO's currently in development is to provide things that WoW doesn't. Meaningful world PvP for example, and territory control, character progression through PvP (beyond just gear grinding).  TESO seems to be headed that route, and Camelot Unchained as well (gonna be a long wait for CU though).

And I think IP means very little. At least for me, I don't care about the IP, it's all about how good the game is.

WoW's lore and characters aren't that special, it's not the IP that makes it successful.  It's the addictive nature of the mechanics (collect, grind, kill, and sometimes raid).  It just does it better than most of its competition.

Yes i do, subject matter and atmosphere are as important to me as game-play. I won't stick with a game that has good gameplay yet an IP that does not interest me. I will not stick with a game that has great IP elements yet has problematic game-play.

Toward the OP's question though, any IP could rival WOW, it just takes a good hook that holds players and contributes to growth for the game.

    Hello Kitty Onine. WoW killer.

    What about Zelda?

It was Runefactory 1 which killed it for me.

And they killed it themself by killing Arthas.

Still, it's making a profit even with dead PvE content (except max level raids)

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Now that might be fun.  I couldn't imagine a more obnoxious fanbase though (besides GW2 fans, obviously).

There might be a game or two beyond the horizon who will get mult-million player bases.

However, there will never be another dominant player like WoW.  WoW will slowly decline and  one day be surpassed by other games (in terms of player numbers) but it will be due to old age and a decrepit code base and not because someone came along with a "WoW killer".

I'd honestly say GW2 has a good chance at growing to WoW like numbers. It seems to be the only MMO since WoW thats actually gaining momentum since launch, rather than losing it.

It's definitely not gaining momentum. But it's not dying rapidly like most new MMOs either.

I dont really think WoW is on the throne anymore.

It's kind of like your old uncle, he's a pretty cool guy for his age and he has the odd joke or two handy when you go to visit him, but he's getting older and older, and pretty soon his humour & novelty begins to wear thin as alzheimer's kicks in.

The King is old now, and his council of Advisors (other MMO's) have begun to make decisions without him.

Active players or total boxes sold?  I haven't played in months but I bet they would still count me.  Don't expect me to return either.

Actually they said the active player base has been rising more than they expected even. I do agree though, it won't be easy to compare without subscriptions.
