[Column] Guild Wars 2: Through the Flame and Frost!

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

ArenaNet is committed to keeping its players engaged and entertained with new updates that are not only fun but also game changing in many ways. We take a look at that notion in our latest Guild Wars 2 column. Check it out before heading to the comments!

My favorite part of any update is the story, but we will get to that in a moment.  Since launch the daily achievements have required players to gather, kill, and complete events.  Now thanks to the new update, the dailies require something new everyday (though it’s usually a mix of a few main achievements).  This ranges from dodging enemy attacks, completing jumping puzzles, and crafting items.

Read more of David North's Guild Wars 2: Through the Flame and Frost!.

    ok- Heres my take.

Iam a big GW2 fan!- not an achivement freak-i leave that to wow players.

I feel Anet needs a better balance like their title Flame & Frost' projects, i feel that fixing signs and warming fire for lazy Norns talking abt the weather isnt enough. for a lore whore like myself.

they went too extreme on minimizing events so everyone can experience them unlike past  major events.

now i just feel ill have to check maybe once a week for any 'changes' to content..furthermore the FotM changes feels like WoW.2...has completely turn me off.

now wvwvw is whats left in my interest -so ill see where that goes...Iam a bit tifffed they put personal stories in the back burner so maybe i came with expectations- maybe the world stories will pick up later on- i dont know. ..iam not dismissing GW2 .

But iam not embracing this new 'Story' telling.-just yet.

This is the first time they havent really impressed me- Although it all sounds great in Dev blogs- so far ingame hasnt impressed me.

What's wrong with the changes to FoTM?

Flying drakes like in eq2 would be my choice.  Of course they have to add in flying to begin with, which probably will be a long way off if ever...

    To sum gw2 up

    Culling (cant see shit captain)

    buggy chaotic dungeons

    fun from 1-80

I think the changes show promise, but they certainly have room to grow and evolve over time. Laurels are interesting but there's not a huge variety of things to spend them on, and the Flame and Frost event is still just a teaser, so I'm wary of calling how good or bad they are.

Certainly they're going in a good direction though, in my opinion at least.

Ive explored 33% of the world and made 2 chars (80, 67). I feel like ive seen everything. Those events are recycled in every map just with reskinned npcs.

Events: Escorting, defending,gathering-thats basicly the 3 things you will do nonstop till 80.

Well i would stop playing long ago if i didnt use hacks to speed up things.

And Anet is so damn slow with updates and fixes. Accouncing 2 months ago changes to come and yet not all are implemented.

Oh and what i dispise are annoucments like those:

Flying is not in the Guild Wars lore, other than the Charr Helicopters.

Bots - Haven't seen any in a long time

Hacks - describe - use hacks get  banned

    Diminishing returns - explain

No end game -  The whole game is end game - I don't see any type of crap like in Rift or WoW

Culling (cant see shit captain) - it happens in all games not just GW2 - it does in Rift.

    buggy chaotic dungeons - nope

    fun from 1-80

Bingo we have a winner here is the customer Gw2 wants!! blind

Hacks banned? lol Anet has no form of hack detection besides players /reports but it dont matter because you dont see them we just clip under the world teleport or fly derp.

Bots your right you cant see them thats because they use HACKS  to clip underneath the world where they can farm mobs free of /reports.

Dimishing returns were put in place by anet on all loot dropped to combat the bots an hacks you say dont exist. Basicly you farm anywhere after a certin amount of time you get hit with DR an all loot becomes crap. Really this was put in place to make people use the gem store more as they can't make a living farming.

The whole game is not end game they put in level scaling for......no reason nobody uses it nobody cares.

Culling does not happen in all games there are games produced 10 years ago that render 10x more players on sceeen then gw2 ever will. With good graphics for their time.

Most of the ppl here hate GW2, I don't know why and i don't care, but if you don't like something just ignore it thats the human nature, so ppl pls leave us ppl who love and like the game to fully enjoy it. Thanks.

About the new contens of the game I want to try it but now no time and no money for new PC, thats sad...

  • itgrowlsitgrowls Member Posts: 2,951

I don't hate it I just dunno who the hell they gave the wheel to over there.

    Here's some examples of why:

DR has become so bad that FoTM and Dragon Event chests simply disappear instead of appearing and offering loot if your toon has DR on it. Instead of fulfilling what they promised we'd get from veterans they added and EXTRA LOOT CHEST to Veterans/Champions one can barely see especially if you kill something gigantic that STILL only drops masterwork items or below. DR makes it almost impossible to gather T6 mats of a specific kind due to a double RNG system (where it's RNG just to get the bags to drop and RNG to open the bag and see the random contents it spews out never the same type of thing twice and never gossamer.) So what do they do? They add yet another RNG bag to the new currency vendor! yeah! cause that'll solve the problem! smh

Most innovative people from Gw1 left already- or do you belive the same creative guys stay ifor 10 years?

Gw2 is not bad but Gw1 was really uniqe. Tell me one game that was like gw1- and those missions you need really tactic to go trough- here in gw2 easy peasy- make a warrior -do 25k dmg to a elite mob in dungeon and do it twice and mob is dead.

Hate is a strong word. More like words of warning....I feel obligated to let people the true state of the game. I sure wish I had known that the game had DR, Culling, Bots, Hacks, an no customer service when I bought the game. Bots n hacks I can understand as an issue in all games an I could look past it if they work on it but instead of banning bots they put in DR so nobody gets loot.

Running around pvp fighting invisible enemies should be a dealbreaker for any game. I dont know how anyone can stomach it but I assume most people are just blind to it especially when you see stuff like ""herp derp what is culling?""

Ok.... I'll be the positive post then after allot of negative ones ...

Due to a busy life i didn't get to play for a while .. yesterday i played my lvl 80 again (finally!) and played for 5 hours straight and the game grabbed me  right away :)

I really dig the changes to the UI can't wait to see the rest

Is it new? Yes. Does it expand gameplay? Yes.

    Sounds good to me.

When someone gets a bad service, they'll usually tell a few people. When a gamer gets a bad service or doesn't like a game, he doesn't know when to stop spewing bile.

The game is just real good. if someone have prob with bots, hacks etc then go play some single player games cuz all mmorpg have them anyway. Anet try real hard to expand the game even if its a real free one. You need a lot of time to see all the content and all classes. W v W is real nice and unigue. Last time i enjoy this type of wvw is in Daoc. So if you dont like the game and only focus on negative ones feel free to leave it for good.

    Keep the nice work Anet

As a pretty well known fan of GW2, i was not impressed nor pleased with this update.

    1. They added ascended amulets. That can only be bought with laurels. That can only be gotten ONCE per day. ONE. so 25 days for a single amulet. The itchy part? I have 6 characters that need that amulet. It'll take me months to get all the amulets i need.

Everyone screams 'But at least everyone else has a chance now!' and i'm fine with that. Thing is, you are supposed to play the game your way. If i cant log in for 3 days out the week, let me grind everything i need on the other days, like with Fracs. No, now you are compelled to log in daily just to get the one token. Pretty upset about that.

    2. The 'living story' bullshit. Marketing.

    EVENTS from GW2:

Lost Shores: Few days in that event.

    Halloween: Week long event roughly.

    Wintersday: 2week long event.

Flame and Frost: Couple events stretched out over months.

They have simply taken the content they have and stretched it over an insane amount of time, getting progressively worse. Same amount of content too. 'Its a developing story'- they scream. No, it isn't. Lie to someone else. Story is done, has been done for awhile, as with the rest of their content(in all mmo's) it is made ahead of time. I'd MUCH rather get a full storyline every 6 months.

    My two cents.

EDIT: lets not go into the WvW fiasco, resetting months of hard work for all servers for no reason. 'It's to make better matchups!" Your current system did that just fine, would have taken half the time to even everyone out rather than let everyone go back to ROFLSTOMPING lower tier servers as we make our way back up the ladder.

It never fails that people on this site complain no mater the quality of the game. I am we'll aware of GW2's short comings but also recognize what a fin and truely unique game it is. You don't like events, well are quest hubs and walls of text that no one reads better? Do you think the whack-o-mold combat of nearly other game is more exciting than GW2's fast paced combat? We knew from nearly thee beginning that intended the end game to begin at level 1 yet many of you rushed to 80 then started screaming you have nothing to do.

My advice is try and find something that has the characteristics you are looking for. Something that will allow you to grind your life away until there too you will burn out. Of course it will be the games fault.

Well I logged in today for the first time since right before Christmas. I had some fun for a bit.. Tried to spark up some conversation with people in just area shout chat, one person responded a few times other than that nothing. I dont understand why this game is so unsociable. More and more games are becoming like this.. Which is killing MMOs for me. I used to make friends in them.

GW2 is one of the worst yet for social interaction. I am thinking of returning to TERA I left  that game not because I didnt like it or even because i got bored. I left it due to RL issues that were going on at the time. By the time I was able to play again my friends were all amped over GW2.. now they are all just spread  out everwhere.

What I will say about GW2. Beautiful world, some fun gameplay, some good stories. but the unsocial people that play it are turning me off. As for this content patch. What does it matter if you dont make friends to play along with.

action combat is going to = less talking.. how do you have time to talk it up while dodging from that champion who will one shot you with anyone of its attacks? i found if people aren't engaged in combat most of the time you can get a conversation going.. it's not hard ot join a guild either.. i'm personally in 4 guilds and can always find at least a couple people chatting it up in guild chat.. honestly i'm such a slow leveler because i spend way to much of my time in game just talking instead of actually playing heh.. just because a game doesn't "require" social interaction for a lot of it doesn't mean people aren't willing to talk and have a conversation and help people out.

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
