You don't suppose that Sony may buy the rights to there own server to play both Dust as well as EvE? NAHH unless it went PVE only. The EvE part.

Yeah DUST will have no chance in the face of games like Planetside 2 or even any ordinary shooter.

It is not going to appeal to console players because of the complexity of the interface, and it is not going to appeal to PC players enough to by a PS3 just for this because it promised Planetside 2 scale, but delivered Mechwarrior Online-esqe arena deathmatch.

You realise that my sons of 8 and 10 are headshooting you in PS2 playing as a group right now? If they can figure that out, they sure as hell can also figure out DUST 514.

You underestimate what level of complexity the young generation can handle.

I've been playing DUST and I've changed my mind! I enjoy it.

I'm glad they have a skill point cap because otherwise this game could prove really addictive - and that's not a good thing.

Sorry, but DUST 514 isn't even worth the time investment, even if you already own a PS3. Not for me at least.

You used the word investment. Can you explain to me, as if I was an investor, exactly why it isn't worth it?

This is an interesting philosphical discussion!

I would say the word 'investment' isn't relevant to the topic. 'Investment' implies financial long-term gain - and there isn't any.

It's like saying that looking at a beautiful painting is an investment.

I would say playing DUST/Eve online for the long-term was worth it because these games are deep as well as fun, and you may socialise (if you so wish).

They also develop as time progresses - they are 'cutting edge'.

The game is bad, the shooting is awkward, the graphics are kinda washed. Not fun enough to play actually.

If you own a ps3 and want a good shooter there are better options. I can't see why anyone would play Dust instead of Battlefield 3 or Killzone 3, unless you are a EVE player who will earn something through it.

Because the return of investment (of time), in the form of "fun", in this particular game is lower than many other games you could be investing your time into. Subjective, of course, but it's really not that good a game. Check out yourself, if you're willing to invest the time. No refunds though.

    I prefer DUST to BF3.

I had a blast with BF2, but the eventual plans for DUST sound better.

I would be interested to know what FPSs / MMORPGs you find more fun than DUST - I feel we need a comparison here.

while those shooters are good they are ultimately very shallow. and seeing as with Battlefield especially they are planning to release a new one every year, at $60 a shot for basically the same game some people would say that Dust has both better time value and better bang for their buck. I know that's my opinion. Especially with CCP's history of free updates.

I don't need to purchase a over-engineered blu-ray player to play a single game.  Won't be purchasing until there is a PC version.

I do empathise with you. I had to buy a PS3 to play DUST. Although I enjoy playing DUST, I do wince when I think of how much I spent.

     Yes, I agree.

I particularly agree that DUST promises more depth - if you want it to.

For example, I've joined a mercinary corp run by The Graduates (under Razor Alliance), called Tgrad Mercs. Soon, the battles on the ground will have an effect on the Eve Universe - i.e. wars in space and on the planets.

In addition, there will be NPC drones to shoot at.

I can't think of an FPS that will have more depth than this FPS MMORPG.

to me its still a mistery why they decided to do it ps3 only, im sure there must be something more complex than (come on fan base, buy a ps3) behind it.

My butt's still sore from having to buy a PS3, but these are a few reasons why it's PS3 only:

There are no cheating programmes on a PS3 (auto aim etc). (bold and underlined - this is an important reason. We don't want any ISK farmers or cheats - this is a PvP game primarily at the moment)

    > CCP want to draw in the PS3 community to the Eve universe. Some of these PS3 players will be younger and it makes them consider Eve in the future.

    > You can have DUST on one monitor and Eve on another - using your ship to pound the ground.

No amount of so called "depth" is going to change the fact that dust plays and feels like a below average fps.

Nobody in their right mind is going to buy a ps3 if there is a possibility that a ps4 might be in the offing in the next year or so though, although tbh, given that the next ps4 might not be backwards compatable with ps3 games does make that something of a moot point.  Then there is the whole F2P shooters thing, Dust514 doesnt offer even a fraction of gameplay that Planetside 2 does, and planetside 2 is a cut down version of Planetside 1..  and then again, isnt Dust 514 just an 8v8 game anyway? hardly worth bothering with tbh with those kinds of numbers, even if it did miraculously make it onto the PC platform. So will Dust 514 fail, can't really see how it could succeed. It may have a certain amount of 'gimmick' status because it ties into Eve, if in a limited fashion, but beyond that, it doesnt do anything that other games don't already do much better. But how about looking at it from within Eve, already there are complaints about how the Dust bunnies are becoming an annoying feature on the in game chat channels.. in Eve.. oh yeah, and Eve players refer to dust players as dust bunnies, no love lost there in all honesty. Its literally all downhill from here, and i don't think its going to be pretty.image

I prefer BF3 to DUST and I'm pretty sure if we compare numbers in a few months I'm in the majority.

I also prefer pretty much any PC shooter over PS3 DUST for technical reasons.

And I don't consider DUST to be an MMORPG, but if I did, the list of which MMORPGs I find more fun than DUST would be pretty long...

I've been playing Dust since pre-E3 build (last spring) and the game has already made leaps and bounds as far as quality, balance, and entertainment goes. I don't see that progress being slowed in the least bit.

With CCP's track record, the game stands to constantly expand (FOR FREE) for years to come. They've stated multiple times that transition to any future playstations is something they are prepared for, and the next big patch will have a big graphics overhaul, including vegetation and other eye candy.

I have to disagree with those that choose PS2 over Dust. I've played both extensively and find myself starting up my Playstation a ton more than logging into Planetside, for really one reason: Dust matters more to me. My character progresses in the EVE universe, earning ISK and SP with each match that help me in a much more meaningful way than some bullsh!t certs in PS2. Oh yay, I can put a different gun on my light assault... w00t. Gotta love that customization and depth. Not to mention the map lines are absolutely meaningless. I'll play whatever continent I feel like playing on that day, and if I capture it all, good for me, but it really doesn't matter to me at all. Not to mention, when I log in the next day, all that progress is utterly erased.

Dust doesn't play into the current sov mechanics, but the faction warfare district control in the corp matches lays an awesome groundwork for the future, and even tho I don't participate in FW, I'm excited about what the future holds. The instanced matches are a good way to get some quick action, something EVE itself actually lacks, and they are on par with the fun I'd feel from any meaningless Battlefield round I've played.

Sure, the graphics need work, and they are getting it. The controls need customization, and its coming. Squads need to be bigger, but I can always do corp battles if I want more of my corp to play alongside. There absolutely needs to be an player-run market, after all, EVE has the best in-game economy in any MMO i know of. But all of these are being improved on, and I've seen great progress so far.

edit: the kb/m vs controller complaint is invalid for the most part since Dust fully supports kb/m. It's all I've been using for several builds.

trainwreck posting, not quite the same thing as posting about a trainwreck is it.. though i think i see now why dust will never make it to PC

Much as i thought the chances of a ps4 ever happening was going to be unlikely, you'll soon be hearing why thats not the case, from Sony, though they are going to be announcing the ps4 in the next few months, i don't think it will be coming in 2013, just that their trying to get a lead on microsofts next xbox.

As for dust players being called dust bunnies on the eve forums, they've also been referred to as dust mites.. by eve forums i mean the official ones though. but back to why i think that dust will never make it to PC, simple really, planetside 2, as problematic as that game is - and recently its had more than a few, it still represents a much better game, deeper gameplay, more options, and, a hell of a lot more players. 24 x 24..  can only be due to console limitations, probably small maps too. but thats the difference between a MMOFPS and a MOFPS, you don't need to guess which one i think is which image
