[Column] Star Wars: The Old Republic: Game Update 1.7 Reactions

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

BioWare recently announced Game Update 1.7: Return of the Gree for Star Wars: The Old Republic and we're offering our initial reactions in this week's SWTOR column.

The Relics of the Gree event will take place in the contested Western Ice Shelf of Ilum and players will be tasked with learning of the Gray Secant, an ancient Gree starship.  The event promises a ‘powerful opponent’ for players to fight at the center of the starship and players can look forward to new weapons and armor as well.

yea they should stick to armor looks that is star wars and not try to be "cool" and pry it into a generic sci fi game.
  • BadOrbBadOrb Member UncommonPosts: 791

Mixing PVP and PVE elements can cause a lot of arguments , it already has on the official forums. At least Ilum is getting something. i quite like the armor and as someone pointed out the Gree are from some distant galaxy and obviously they are fans of Tron , maybe the disney influence is starting to shine through. Nice Blog.

A couple things. First, I'm so sick and tired of hearing people bash the disney acquisition of Lucas Arts and then saying anything bad or out of the ordinary that now happens in SWTOR is because of Disney.  Disney treats the production companies it buys out pretty damn well, Marvel Studios being a great example.

Also EAware had and has been making these terrible armor decisions WAY before Disney bought out Lucas.  So get over it!!!!

Second, Bill I completely agree with your article for once.

Reputation system is very disappointing, I know the game needs some "fluff" but this isn't very nice fluff at all, it's old, stale & boring fluff, I think the devs need a "creative enema" to flush out these tired old ideas so they can move onto something interesting instead.

Well my reply got wiped lovelly , anyways way to miss my point and the fact a lot of that stuff was off the cuff. I happen to love the fact Disney aquired Star Wars as matter of fact  as we might of never got any more films otherwise. So maybe check someones post history before accusing me of being in a relm of the Anti-Disney crowd , thank you.

Why would I waste my time browsing your post history to reply to one post that annoyed me?  The reason I even mentioned you is because of what you said in that single post not your past identity on this website.  So from the perspective of an outsider to your history you came off as a Anti-Disney person, just sayin.

Hmmm... the armour looks like something out of Anarchy Online. I am not sure this update has anything for me, personally but I guess it is a good thing that PvP is seeing something added to it. Is it what is needed ? I don't know since I don't PvP in ToR.

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

I think the armour looks cool!  I personally don't care for some of the attire in SWTOR, but I also don't expect it too look precisely like the outfits in the movies.  This is thousands of years before Vader and Luke.  Bellbottoms would rock!  Really, I just want variety - excluding the same outfit with a different color.

Was hoping the first large-update to open world pvp in TOR would inspire me to come back. At this rate I'll just wait 3 years and return just to do the only enjoyable thing in TOR, the story.

I cancelled my sub the day the notes for this patch came out. Endless daily grinding was bad enough. They can take their faction grinding and cram it.

Hamster wheel style repetion is not content.

I'vre come to accept the fact tha the biggest complainers about this game don't even play. Anyways, yeah, I'm psyched too. I can't play as much as some people, so these updates are coming at a good pace for me. Excited about about it.

Heck after this patch, I can't even play the game, it's just a black screen or freezes and glitching. I double the system requirements as well. HE is crap, everyone knows it, and it ruined this game from the beginning. Well that and the complete lack of any MMO content as well. Now they patch it with Tron armor and half the people can't even log in. Yay. The F2P restrictions were on my last nerve anyway. I love Bioware's story telling ability, but good grief guys, get something right. Everything since Dragon Age has been just awful.

Will always have hope and try my best to support Bioware, but you can only deal with failure so many times.

Its thinking like this that made the game this bad.

All they had to do was give us the armor and the ability to ALTER IT. There is this crazy new invention (haha) in MMORPGs called "dye" and "patterns" that allows the player to change the colors on armor, even placing 2-3 different colors on a single piece of armor depending on the pattern...even the ability to create a guild symbol, and place that on armor also.

Basically making it so a single piece of armor can have 100s of different looks.

This game doesnt have it, because the developers are short sighted people that really dont have a clue when it comes to the MMORPG genre...which would be why this update is also including an expansion to the Legacy system which has become a JOKE in the MMORPG world for how useless it is...and also combining PvE with PvP.

If they had a CLUE, they would be working on what drove so many players AWAY from the game.

I don't play GW2 daily as my chars are well off. I have tried to play This game alot since f2p. My gear is good as its the old pvp/pve welfare epics the had since day one. What hurts this is how they are not learning from other companies and just doing their "own" vision. Fine but your vision is crap why? Your model for money nerfong F2P so harshly is stupid you want to pvp well grind pve to buy the pvp tokens. Not smart IMO here's a thought limit the feeds or rewards in the match if ur a f2p. Armor is armor live or go away people are all still shunned from wow type clones so you need to innovate I this regards. If they don't change some o heir business models they will have a slow death.

So even though I said I quite like the armor and all the posts around mine just insulted SWTOR you pick mine out of those . Lol , very funny and I am annoyed that you called BioWare EaWare but that seems to be a cool trend atm. Did I scream at you about that ? Nope and I thought my off the cuff connection between tron and Disney was a quick witted one . The first iv'e seen even the blog states about it being tron like. Again you missed the point , try not to shout at people when you misread their posts.just sayin.

Want to know why calling Bioware EAWare is a "cool trend atm"?  Maybe it is because all of the founding members or Bioware that made the company the great company it *was* have left.  I have always wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but there was ME3 and their terribly handling of that.  There was the terrible follow through on the release of SWTOR, the poor handling that followed, and one of the fastest cut and run to F2P I have ever seen.  At that point I had thought they had hit rock bottom...  then they started charging for action bars.

If you knew anything about Bioware, and how they treated, communicated, and worked with the community in the past(distant), it should be fairly obvious this isn't the Bioware we knew and loved.

Huh? Where did he mention plaque?

Regardless, much as I am against the direction this game has gone costume wise they can't get much fucking worse than where they went in the past. Seems to be an uphill road far as that goes. Unless having male characters wearing outfits that Amish women would say, "Aw, hell no." Is a fitting design for the game

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Matter of taste.  And since SWTOR is not even in same timeline they can come up with whatever designs they like. I don't play SWTOR anymore but those new armors do look good.  who knows maybe i will go back again just to get those for my trooper and smuggler.

I don't mind mixing pvp and pve. The did it for the HK-51 quest, and it worked out fine. I just figure to bring an escort of people that know pvp so they can take care of whatever griefers I run into.

I think the reputation system is a good start and should be expanded upon. I also think that for your legacy, it should affect how the different factions see people within your legacy. For example, if your reputation is high for the Empire, than how NPCs respond to your Republic characters should be a bit different, such as with mistrust and suspicion, and vice versa.

still think they should stick with 70´s sci fi gritty feel that the original movies had. the new stuff is too shiny.
