For the fun of it (and boredom) I compiled a list of most to least played MMOs (Raptr stats)

zethcarnzethcarn Member UncommonPosts: 1,558

Now I know Raptr isn't the be-all end-all source for tracking MMO activity but is there really any one reliable source?  I think it at least shows a trend of what's being played.  However, you must also consider the release date of each game and how long Raptr has been around (since 2007).

World of Warcraft: 723,000 members / 27 million hours played

Diablo 3: 196,000 members / 3.4 million hours played

DC Universe Online: 141,000 members / 642,000 hours played

Star Wars: The Old Republic: 100,000 members / 2.7 million hours played

Lord of the Rings Online: 84,000 members / 954,000 hours played

EVE Online: 69,000 members / 1.4 million hours played

Rift: 66,000 members / 2.1 million hours played

Planetside 2: 66,000 members / 331,000 hours played

Guild Wars 2: 63,000 members / 2.3 million hours played

Star Trek Online: 57,000 members / 1.1 million hours played

TERA: 33,000 members / 824,000 hours played

Everquest 2: 32,000 members / 274,000 hours played

Runes of Magic: 28,000 members / 476,000 hours played

The Secret World: 19,000 members / 228,000 hours played

Everquest: 8,800 members / 128,000 hours played

edit: added Lotro

That's interesting to see the difference in members versus hours played.

Can I please please please be the first to point out that D3 is not an MMO?

Rift and Raptr recently did a promotion which is distorting Rift's numbers.  It looks like same ting as happening with DCUO and STO as well.

I know it really isn't but I threw it up there because of how high it was on the list.

Indeed! If this chart is good for nothing else, it gives a glimpse of how long players are willing to log into each MMO.

Houzrs played seem to be very low. Is that hours/month or total since raptr started ?

So hang on, I'm unfamiliar with Raptr, how does it come up with those stats?

Yes my chart is pretty useless except for amusement.  Raptr however uses this to assist further game development by seeing what players like most.

On average it says that each person played WoW for 37 hours since 2007? I suck at maths and my calculatorfoo might somehow be wrong, but the hours divided by the players reveals some weak numbers.

You download their desktop app and scan for which games are on your system (or add them manually).  When you start up the game it records how long you've been playing.

A lot of that may be free trials.  You can play WoW for free up to level 20.  Many of those people may have quit after the trial.

The thing I found most interesting is the retention rate of each game.  DCU may have a lot of members, but each one has only played an average 4.5 hours.  That's very bad for an MMO.

Meh. How about we post this where it matters? Like on the Raptr forums.

I recently went back to Rift, bought SL and played for a month, and well, again it is a situation of MOST players arent using Raptr, not even with the free mount offered for using it.

The truth is this data published by Raptr, I assume, is simply an apempt to advertise. Advertise to players by hinting that "This is what the other players are doing", and appealing to crowd mentality, to get more players to use the Raptr software. But also use as advertising data to sell Raptr services to game publishers.

But hey, I am with you. Any time there is "cherry pickable" data we should always use it to further discussion and our personal goals. ( that last line is sarcasm)

I'd be curious to see a list of the members / hours played ratio calculated from this data.

In theory it would show a casual (short session) hardcore (long session) ranking.  Of course allowing that AFK counts as hardcore.

EDIT: my bad... it's not time played per session, it's time played per month.

And now if you're interested, the Retention Rate of each MMO.  As much hate as it gets WoW is still the leader.

    1. World of Warcraft: 37.3 hours per member

    2. Guild Wars 2: 36.5
    3. Rift: 31.8
    4. Star Wars The Old Republic: 27.0
    5. TERA: 25.0
    6. EVE: 20.3
    7. Star Trek Online: 19.3
    8. Everquest: 14.5
    9. The Secret World: 12.0
    10. Lord of the Rings Online: 11.4
    11. Everquest 2: 8.6
    12. Planetside 2: 5.0
    13. DC Universe Online: 4.5

    I excluded Diablo 3 but it's 17.3

Surprised at some of these numbers, especially Rift.

Could that be seen implying great marketing with a poor player hook rate?

    Like "installed, played, uninstalled"?

Nah its about on par with where it should be.

    Right now MMO's are

    1) WoW

    2) GW2

    3) Rift

    4) EvE

    5) PS2

    6) TSW

TERA is seeing a spike do to everyones accounts being reactivated for free in anticipation for the f2p conversion

    SWTOR's ranking is lower

Others are running promotions to try and increase their representations in these metrics (One of many reasons these aren't really valid for any kind of argument for or against a game).

All in all I'm fairly impressed with the results, its almost on par with the reality this time around. Still no where close to being an accurate tool though.

  • ezpz77ezpz77 Member Posts: 227
Pretty cool to see SWTOR so high on that list.

Sub based games and buy to play are almost gaurenteed a higher retention rate than F2P.  It's pretty much the nature of things.  I'm more inclined to download a MMO that is F2P and play it for a couple hours than pay for a game and become bored with it after a few hours.

A game like Planetside 2 is designed for quick play too so the retention rate being so low doesn't suprise me at all.

All that data doesnt really mean much, figures are highly inacurate.  A lot of gamers who use Raptr  and xfire jump games a lot and a lot of the data is distorted as many are playing trials aswel.  As games like GW2 being a B2P model, players will always jump in and out, where players who pay a sub to the subscription model are more likely to play them games at longer intervals.
