Computer built arround an i7, trying to stay below 1000$.

mothefomothefo Member Posts: 30

So not very pro here, hence why i'm posting. I'm trying to build a new PC. I would like to build something that has a high end core that i can expand on in the next few years. My budget is arround 1000$ and i'm sort of stuck wanting an i7 for CPU.Don't know a whole lot about the i5 VS the i7 but i figured for 50$ more why not..... For right now i would like to use my current case (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156078) since...well i dont see the point of a new one. Also, just for now  i'm thinking of keep using my nvidia GTX 460 overclocked (yes i know, it's a piece of shit but i will be spending for a good one in a few months).

so this what i came up with is the following:

CPU   Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

heatsink: Arctic Cooling UCACO-P0900-CSB01 Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler

motherboard: Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX LGA1155 Motherboard

memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk

power: PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W 80 PLUS Silver Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

optical drive: Samsung SH-224BB DVD/CD Writer

operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) (i have Win.7 already, but i lost the damn activation key. grrrr!)

all this would run me arround 900$ before tax (so i could even upgrade a little), and as i said i would be re-using my GTX 460 card and my case. i have all the rest (monitor, mouse, keyboards, surge protector, cables, etc, etc)

feel free to critique.

Looks good, I'd go with teh I5 2500k or 3770k as a gaming CPU though. Higher overlock potential and 4 actual true physical cores and not virtual cores. Take the difference in money and buy a second 460 vid card and put them in SLI.

Whether you're in the US or Canada matters, and you seem to be mixing the two freely in your links.

I'd advise against getting a Core i7-3770 if you're on a meaningful budget.  For workloads that don't scale to more than four cores, it will lose to a mildly overclocked Core i5-3570K.  For workloads that scale to eight cores, it's no better than an FX-8350.  And both of those other processors are much cheaper than a Core i7-3770.

I wouldn't suggest buying a 2nd low end card for SLI.  You're better off making due with that card or buying a new card.

Two Low end cards in SLI are not better than a single high end card in almost all situations.

You can verify this by checking out www.tomshardware.com as they do some great benchmarking on almost all cards.

Yes you're right painless but i think two 460's and an i5 is still better than an i7 3770k in my opinion.  I mean he already is re using an old one so i guess its a matter of wanting to front the leftover cash and get a newer gpu and shelf the old 460 or just put a little cash and get a second 460. I dunno if cash wasn't an issue i would just start with a newer gpu also.

Edit- Tom's hardware is an awesome site

Why are you looking at a Mini ITX motherboard?  That's for small form factor systems, and they have to make a lot of sacrifices to fit the form factor.

I'd get a different power supply, as well.  You're paying enough to get a fairly high end unit, but then not actually getting the fairly high end unit.  It's not a bad power supply, but it's not worth what they charge for it.

  • eye_meye_m Member UncommonPosts: 3,317

Why would you use that motherboard?

EDIT: Quizzical beat me to it, so yeah, what he said. Andyou definately can't SLI on a motherboard that only has one PCI-e16 slot.

i'd rather focus on my CPU than my vidoe card here as the video card will be replaced shortly. in 2 months i will probably have 300$ to sink into a video card.

should i upgrade the CPU to the i7 3700k? my budget is not extremely tight...noobody seems to like the i7s arround here? are i5 really that much better?

....oh and i do live in Canada.

i know even less about motherboards then CPUs ...:D

  • MavolenceMavolence Member UncommonPosts: 635
personally i'd get the i5 3570k over the i7 3770k and OC it to 4.5 and just pocket the money and put it toward that new vid card quicker

I would recommend switching your motherboard for this http://ca.asus.com/en/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77V_LE_PLUS/

This will save you a few dollars, and give you the options for upgrades that you'll want like SLI and additional RAM.

EDIT:  Just as an FYI, Quizzical is going to find a cheaper solution than this one as well.

It's not that the i7 is bad, it's not. It's just that it costs 33% more for almost no speed increase in gaming.

If you do a lot of video encoding or something, then the cost is easily justified. Just not for gaming. That lets you put $100 more towards something else that can meaingfully impact your gaming, like more powerful GPU, or an SSD, or peripherals.

i5 3570k is all you need for gaming.

WAY better off putting the extra cash into buying a new video card, that will be your bottleneck way before the processor will.

I like the i7 but it's for specific purposes, not gaming. I do a lot of 3D modeling as well as Video and photo editing among other  things. The hyperthreading and such suites my needs better so I like the i7.

Now if you are simply building a gaming rig theres no need for it. You will actually lose performance with an i7 over an i5 if your main or sole purpose is gaming.

It's not that no one likes it, but you are on a  gaming forums so most will assume the primary purpose is gaming and thusly suggest the one better for gaming.

So, while we are at it... what is the purpose of the build?

I love my i7 at work, where i need it for compiles and stuff.

But for home use my 6300 is enough, don't think I would get that much better performance game wise with a i5 3570 a 8350fx or a high end i7.

It's a question of where you get most bang per buck. Once you have a fairly high end processir like an i5 or a piledriver your moneys better going into a better gpu or ssd in my opinion.

thank you for all the feedback guys, so i've changed a few things arround, and i'm now thinking of going withe the following:

    power:  Rosewill Xtreme Series RX850-S-B 850W http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182072

    CPU:   i5 3770k    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

    heatsink:  Rosewill ROCC-12001 AIOLOS 120mm   http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200069

    memory:  Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 8GB (2 x 4GB)   http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226095

motherboard:  ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS LGA  http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131848

    ssd:       http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226237

pluss windows 7 it's going to come to 930$ before tax and shipping (995$ total).  keep in mind i'm in Canada and we pay more for everything :P. i'm still using my own case( http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156078), dvd drive, and gtx 460 card for now. will be buying probabgly a nvidia gtx 660 or something of the sort very shortly after.

    what you think?

  • MavolenceMavolence Member UncommonPosts: 635
Much better in my opinion for cost/preformance. Do you already have thermal paste? if not i'd get some artic silver paste and take off whatever comes with the cpu and heatsink and re apply the artic silver paste. I'm not familiar with that brand of PSU but after reading alot of the feedback it looks to be preforming well from new egg. Also you can always add more RAM later on down the raod its the single most easy upgrade you can do. Good luck! Hope its a lot of fun
  • ShakyMoShakyMo Member CommonPosts: 7,207
Yeah get article silver paste its only Like £5

Do a lot more research.. you don't need 850w AND stay away from Rosewill, you're overpaying.

Mobo is overkill since you don't know what ur really doing, and you should buy a different cpu cooler.

  • severiusseverius Member UncommonPosts: 1,516

Just built an I5 3570k system, MB is Gigabyte b75m-d3h, 16g ram, thermaltake case and 600w powersupply also, I am reusing my ssd drives from my old system and my radeon 6870.  Grand total was 450.00.  Playing everything I have right now on max settings and enjoying it quite a bit. SWTOR, GW2, a couple of beta tests and Dishonored all looking quite pretty heh.  Pretty sure I coulda done better on the Motherboard for about the same price but meh, like I said everything is running smooth and I am happy.

OH!  Instead of buying windows, I downloaded a copy of the Windows 8 consumer preview (if you google you will find it) and then did the 39.99 upgrade to windows 8 professional.  Ya only have a couple weeks left where you could do this, if you were interested in it.  I can honestly say I hate MetroUI but the rest seems fine, plus it boots hella fast lol.

I don't think you need an 850 w but Rosewill are excellent power supplies. I've been using them for years and have yet to have one fail on any build I've done.

I personally would change a few things.

A cheaper motherboard for one. No need to pay that much for a mobo with features you will never need. something like this maybe http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130645

A better rated power supply. Nothing wrong with the brand, but that one you picked is not even bronze rated. Something like this is what I would pick. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182264

The other components look fine to me.

It's not an issue of Rosewill being good or bad.  Rather, it depends on which particular power supply you get.  Their Tachyon power supplies are among the best on the market.  Their capstone and lightning power supplies are also very good.  Their extreme series?  Not so much.

Regardless, very few gaming rigs have any plausible need for anything over 650 W.

How about a much cheaper motherboard that might well be better than the one you picked:

And a much higher quality power supply for about the same price:

The heatsink you picked should be fine, as it looks like a fairly typical design with several copper heatpipes carrying heat (loosely; more literally carrying water vapor) to a bunch of aluminum fins.  I'd sooner get this, though.

    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

Of the two power supplies I linked, the Seasonic is higher quality than the Rosewill, but they're both very good.  If you've got plans to upgrade in the future to a very high end, very power-hungry video card, or to go for an unreasonably large overclock of everything, I'd take the latter power supply for the extra wattage.  But if not, then I'd take the former power supply for the higher quality.  The system you're building now may or may not ever pull 300 W from the power supply at stock speeds, and an excellent 550 W power supply is plenty good enough for that.
