In large part I think it is a back lash against a) the hype stirred up largely by Anet, and b) the slightly absurdly outstanding reviews it has received.

Probably because it makes for such a visible and easy target.

Because it is one of the most overhyped and overrated mmos of all time along with TOR. Both are now great targets for forum haters that actually hyped the game themselves shortly before and after the release.

Its just that other game forums are pretty slow, and here on GW2 forums its pretty active so to stir up a conversation people do what ever it takes. It happens to almost all new or popular games. Just wait until some other is released or you can look at DFUW. Then when Archage is released.

Its the thing to do these days.

Should seriously start considering putting In my own opinion in front of that.

Because of threads like this one regurgitating the same old same old.

Instead of getting all huffy puffy, donning their best shining knight armour and attacking every silly little thread opened up about GW2, posters skip right over the good and positive threads discussing varying topics.

Yep, those topics are skipped right over but the silly ones? 50+ posts in no time flat.

MMORPG.com wouldn't be MMORPG.com if it were the other way around I guess.

Oh look here comes "because you enjoy GW2 you must be new to the MMO genre".   Nice lets see what other characters can come along with the elitist comments.

A lot folks around here have built careers around bashing video games. It's just something you have to get used to. If someone likes a game on this site, you can bet your ass someone else will come along to kick sand in their faces. Most of it boils down to forum PVP, but in some cases, you could actually be dealing with someone who 'aint so stable ;) Just think of the latter as the site's court jesters, and I think you'll find the place much more tolerable :)

Not at all, look that titles the OP posted, in fact, it goes a long way to explaining why he feels GW2 is one of the best he's ever played. He doesn't know any better.

Yeah, I know, there's your 2nd elitist remark.  image

Four reasons as I see them:

1.) Because everyone on MMORPG.com hates every MMORPG.

2.) Because Guild Wars 2 saw so much hype, even if it was the best game to ever exist it could probably never live up to it.

3.)  Because it's relatively popular, it paints a target on it.

4.) Guild Wars 2 is actually a pretty bad game.

It's not that it's a great game, or a horrible game.  It's very different from traditional MMORPGS, however.  Everyone is going to have their own personal gripes.

On my personal top of the list is how anti-social Guild Wars 2 is.  The counter argument is simply: well you are antisocial, so the game can't be anymore social that you!  But I disagree.  Guild Wars 2 is designed to remove the traditional competitive rivalries found in other MMORPGS.  There is no comparison between players.  No hate, and also, no love.  Everyone more or less does their own thing.  Guild Wars 2 doesn't provide the tools for social interaction, such as adequate emotes, character inspections, or even a /who command to follow others around (or even see what characters are doing, their class, level, achievements, and such).  Guilds are a joke, and just an extra chat channel.

Emote's are a feature in MMORPG's that I find essential for character interaction.  You can't even /smile /frown /accuse, for example, in GW2.  I can count the number of emotes available in GW2 on my fingers, and they are all passive herp-derp ones.  Roleplaying is out because of this (anyone who say they roleplay in GW2 doesn't know anything about real RP).

Dynamic Events, you know the thing that was supposed to revolutionize gaming, turned out to be incredibly boring.  All DE's follow the same few themes:  Defend this area, Escort this guy around, Collect some items for an NPC, or defeat a boss mob.  While the scripts can be temporarily interesting, they are highly repetitive, and the NPC's have no believable substance, because they just keep doing the same event over and over ... over and over, every 10-20 minutes.

The art style is OK, and some areas are neat to explore - caves, houses .. but the textures repeat too much.  Even though the climate may change, the textures repeat way too often.  The next zone feels an awful lot like the one you were just in.

Everything is passive in GW2.  No disputes, nothing really contested.  Even gathering nodes are not contested, they respawn for the player, not the community.  No interaction for grouping to get stuff done.

No progression.  Once you do the first zone, you saw the whole game.  The geometry of the next zone maps may change, but the DE's still follow the same themes.  Becoming lv 80 is not a cause for celebration - it was more of a silent "whooptie doo!" moment.

No trinity.  Every character is more or less the same.  Nobody is important, just warm bodies to fill a void.  Dungeon encounters are pretty lame as a result and don't rely on special boss mechanics to learn.  Every encounter is just run around, try not to get hit, heal yourself and do damage. Meh.

Not a seemless world.  Every "zone" is a square box.  Exploration is silly - did you go to this corner .. what about that one?  The places of interest appear of the map, so it's only a matter of looking at the map to know what areas are graphically interesting.  The maps are generally very bad, and don't properly show cave passages you discovered.

Of course thats the bad stuff.  On the positive though, GW2 does run a sporty top notch game engine that can do massive PVP.

It's just not a very complex game .. with only a few skill abilities to choose from (and each is the same from class to class, just different names and particle effects).  It comes off as a dumbed down version of WoW.  And even WoW dumbed their own game down a bunch over the years :(

    TLDR:

GW2:  Great & simple game for young kids whose parents are afraid that they might become too social with strangers!  :-)  Not a good complex interactive game for adults, however.

    Welcome to mmorpg.com cycle

People overhype it, get disappointed then feel like they need to scream at every thread how bad the game is for them, but without the "for them" otherwise it would just fall into deaf ears

while i stoped playing this game awhile ago cause it just bored me , i don't waste tons of time bashing it because that would be dumb. The people who waste tons of time ripping a game they don't like , vs. going and playing something they do like have a problem, i wouldn't waste too much time trying to sort it out.  There is a lot of compulsive behavior with gamers that makes little sense, and its largely why the majority of people who play games never post cause they don't wanna get ripped on by some finatic over a 1st world leasure product , cause that seems nuts to them ....cause it is.......

    Why so many bashing?

I blame so many fanbois ranting about a game as if its some holy graal. Blame the fanbois, its the same reason WoW gets bashed so much. I honestly feel the need to target down this game just because so many people say so many stupid things about the game that it just drives me to have to post up as a counter to some dillusional dreams fanbois have of this game.

Yes I personally disliked this game, but even then I had the same feeling (even worst really) for The Secret World yet I still feel its a good game and has so much good for it. I couldn't manage more then a few hours but I have far more respect for that game then over this one. i just see to many flaws with this game that when I see a fanboi rant about how everyone is 'stupid' and the game is the best ever... god. I enjoy rift but I sure as hell could go on about its problems openly, with my bias not showing so blatently.

Eh.  If you had been here - or objectly remember- how things were before GW2 launched you'd have seen some pretty insane trolling from GW2 fans super hyped for their game trolling every game in the year leading up to it.

This is actually very very tame.  Mostly I'd say because the game is B2P and does not raise the magnitude of outrage the same type of posters would've voiced had the title been P2P.   Had GW2 launched as P2P the fireworks would light the world.

Anyway.   Gw2 fans did it to every other game before their game came out to light.  So, what's the surprise.  Gw2 is not a special snowflake.

Because it could have been a lot better with very little effort.

Because the GW2 "Fanboys" have been attacking our games for the last good while and turnabout is fairplay.

    Because i can.
