The story of SW mistakes

DeeweDeewe Member UncommonPosts: 1,980

Step 1)

  • Developing a MMO based on WoW, only.
  • Betting everything on (fair) custscene, (cliche) story and (nice) V.O. with meaningless choices.
  • Not delivering as many gameplay features as what's existing in others MMOs.
  • Having most of the in game features with lower quality than most MMO.
  • Not optimizing the engine, server side for network synchronisation and having good NPC AI, client side for good performance and nice graphics.

  • Designing the game around a cartoonish graphical chart with heroic proportions.

  • Outsourcing art without a good quality control nor IP / lore validation.

  • Not delivering a world but setting everything on rails.

  • Making PvP based on stats.
  • Delivering a sub par space shooter.
  • Not listening to player feedback, before, then during the beta. Have a we know better mindset
  • Not managing efficiently such a large project.
  • Over hyping the game

Step 2)

  • Launching an unevenly polished game during a very bad time frame.
  • Making Classes changes impacts either negatively PvP or PvE at each iteration.
  • Struggle to fix the bugs and improve the game play
  • Pushing content in game without taking into account players feedback from the test servers

  • Not adding content fast enough.

  • Implementing new features with still less polish than in other games

  • Lie to the customers about poor FPS performance

  • Butchering the lore with non fitting gear and things like non force users force lightning others.

  • Havig a bad PR with keeping the we know better attitude and self congratulating themselves
  • Not addressing the main players concerns and keeping players in the void.
  • Convincing EA top managers people left because the monthly fee not the way to go instead of not worth it.

Step 3)

  • Implement one of the worst F2P MMO model, making people play for tools (UI and so) not for content
  • Make the game barely enjoyable for F2P
  • Scam players with real cash lottery
  • Oblige former players to pay a sub to get their "rewards"
  • Oblige players to pay for Christmas "gifts"
  • Do not add much content in F2P but mostly re-skinned assets
  • Keep wasting $$$ on the space shooter, dedicating a whole team.
  • Keeping hyping sup par features "going to love the speeder" Yeah sure.

Step 4)

  • Make subscribers pay for future major patches (free in other games)
  • Do not allow player to pay said content with earned in game currency (CC)
  • Not extending the much looked after Class Story
  • Bring back world PvP as timed events only

Step 5 (Taking guesses)

  • Limiting world PvP to very specific "bigger" instances
  • Still not separating PvE and PvP skills
  • Adding re-skinned human skeletons as new species only.
  • Making a BattleFront like space sim (boring long term) vs a X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter/JTL
  • Pushing back UI addons/skins
  • Not adding mini games like Pazaak, pod/swoop racing
  • Keep making people to pay real cash for color (hue) changes on the gear (Revan set *cough*)
  • Not adding appearance tabs nor gear slots toggles.

What's puzzling here, is after SWG failure and post MMO history of half success, you'd think people would learn from these mistakes, especially when they were involved in them.

But no, it seems TOR managers are digging their grave deeper and deeper at each iteration.

This is amazing news way to go SWTOR. Those who have been hating on TOR for over a year now are squirming and are on MAJOR damage control. You can post all you want history has show you all have been wrong on everything about SWTOR. The 1st expansion of many is in the works, and nothing whined cried ans lied about on sites like this will stop it.

+100 for SWTOR And those who enjoy this game!

    Great post!

Reading through the bullets .. yep .. yep .. yep .. yep..

I could only hope that EA gets some new interns who can actually say, "You know, this game isn't really what fans wanted." .. or "The monetization of Star Wars is becoming your worst enemy."

If SWTOR (and I mean IF) implements freeroam space combat, I hope they use a different engine (EQ1 had multiple engines in their game after all).  Same with any potential competitive non-combat minigames (card games or racing).

SWTOR seems to load a brand new game every time players switch zones, so they might as well actually load a brand new game / game engine.

Big mistake: Not including Space flight into a Star Wars game.

The Infinity freeroam space can't be linked enough.  It's what SWTOR should have included (and what EA was asked to include years ago, but didn't):

Infinity The Quest For Earth: Pre Alpha Tech Demo HD (in game)

Well lets hope their 2nd expansion will include your space combat, its very well documented its in the works. Patience is a virtue, lets just hope when the do give you the new space combat you dont jump on some other bandwagon.

He replied to more than half. Who has time to reply to all of someones rants that have none, zero absolutely sqwat for factual evidence to back any of his claims. The main poster was the one misinformed and I would agree he probably has never played the game. To copy/paste something from another forum is funny. The best part is watch the same type of people (those who have not played/haters) eat it up and think its all true.

I found the bullets rather down to Earth.  Factual evidence lies with those that played the game, and the issues presented indicated someone who, in-fact, played the game.  I don't see anything malign towards SWTOR here, just honesty.

SWTOR can be a great game, but it needs people to talk about how it can be better, not how great it (argueably) already is.

First off I played the game for a few months. With that said, less than half were reponded to. Not very hard to count, well it may be hard for folks still playing SWTOR :P

Some of the list may be completely wrong, buy I agree with more than disagree.

Nice summary by the original poster.

Why is it that SW-themed MMOs always become object lessons in 'how not to do an MMO'?

  • KenFisherKenFisher Member UncommonPosts: 5,035

Meh, I'm in on about half of the list.  Weak engine performance, questionable prioritization, and KOTOR-WoW hybrid.

I'm still hoping they can pull off a win with it.  I'm nowhere near a fan, but it's a decent IP that deserves a decent game.

    • Limiting world PvP to very specific "bigger" instances
    • Still not separating PvE and PvP skills
    • Adding re-skinned human skeletons as new species only.
    • Making a BattleFront like space sim (boring long term) vs a X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter/JTL If JTL was so good why did SWG fail?  Battlefront is awesome!

Omg where to start. Let's start with this: Your a fanboy. Yes you are....

Now, on to you're utter destruction:

"WoW is fun going by how many people play it." -Lots of older folks playing checkers in retirement homes. It's what they know.

"Thats why I sub  to this game." -Why do you sub to this game? Does your subscription change this massively single player game into an mmo? If so, have you ever played an mmo?

"Such as?" -Such as guild banks (maybe it's there now, I don't sub, and /quit), guild progression (lvls/perks etc.), NIGHT AND DAY CYCLES (derp), meaningful ai (meaning it's doing something not roaming a 5mx5m box drooling on itself), how about a meaningful economy, or meaningful pvp? Even Warhammer Online satisfies more of these than SWTOR.

"Such as?" -Please see above references, do you need a link?

"Get a better computer" -Look up the definition of optimization. SWTOR is so shoddy it eats unnecessary resources. The engine is not proprietary and was not built in house for this game.

"Play the Old Republic Games." -Most of us played them on xbox 360 (we didn't want xbox 360 graphics with worse performance). I think consoles are actually where you came from. I do give bioware props on the fact that they did make the next ten or so however many Old Republic games in this game. They just couldn't make them into an mmo.

"Link please?" -You need a lot more than a link....please.

"You want every single World in SWTOR to be what? the size of gw2 continent?" -He wants every single world to be a, *gulp* world. NIGHT AND DAY? WT* Yeah, without night and day you begin to lose immersion. Without economies you begin to lose...... immersion. With instanced worlds (they're actually just maps, not worlds) you lose.... immersion, omg what a pattern.

I'm gonna go ahead and wrap this up with:

Have you ever played an mmo?

SWG is a failure how? I played it for YEARS....Meaningful crafting, economies, night and day, everything was player made with his name and a unique serial number.

SWG was an mmo, a world you lived in complete with faction warfare. It had what SWTOR lacks...immersion.

You, a young buck mmo gamer calling SWG a failure is hilarious. MMOs like SWG, Everquest, Asherons Call, and some others innovated the mmo genre from the basics that started with UO, the first graphical mmo. Now go away with yourself and trouble us no more the op speaks truth.

Perfect reply :P SW:TOR failed so badly as an mmo, would be good as a single player maybe

    • Not delivering as many gameplay features as what's existing in others MMOs.Such as?

Let's start with the first 3:

    1) Check the word in red / italic and think about it for 2 minutes

    2) Do you mean you wanted a single player game, without even good story as in others RPG games like say Witcher or Risen or Planescape Torment and aren't looking for meaningfull choices?

    3)  @launch, missing among others (not in the way the game had not all the below entries but it's the only MMO that had none of them):

    • Swimming
    • Third party addons
    • Minigames like card games or slot gamers
    • Dual spec
    • Day/night cycles
    • Non humanoid based playable races
    • Planetary housing
    • Housing furnishing
    • Animal based pet classes
    • Resources for crafting that do have quality
    • Complex crafting system
    • Guild leveling system
    • Animal mounts
    • Flying mounts
    • PvP Arenas
    • Collision detection between characters
    • Macros
    • Barber / Image Designer
    • Appearance tabs
    • Fishing
    • Guild "Tabard"
    • Multiplayer mounts
    • Gear Dyes
    • Shared storage bank slots
    • In game voice chat
    • LFG tool
    • Guild bank
    • Incentives for socialization
    • Character extended body customization
    • 3 Factions RvR
    • Wolrd PvP
    • RPG tools
    • Underwater content
    • 3d exploration

Then I invite you to have a look at the below threads, before stating people like me are cluless of the game or don't want it to succeed.
