Is this a quest based game? Or is a free roaming game, with grind, and quests as optional.

More of the free-roaming gaming with a grind, and optional quests. There is a quest series right when you make a new character, that's mostly a tutorial / tour quest series that shows you how various parts of the game work. Other than that, there are different types of optional quests, but grinding is just as rewarding.
The game also has a random loot system, ala Diablo or Asheron's Call 1. You have a chance at finding some cool stuff at any level really. Although, the game does drop more loot that you can use, like if you're a human you'll see more human gear with occasional loot for other races.
The higher level you get, the more grindy it becomes.
