KingsIsle Entertainment creators of Wizard101 have done a huge mistake by describing the Quetzals as some mythical flying snakes. In fact Quetzals are not some mythical creatures, they're actual bird species.
Quetzals are strikingly colored birds in the trogon family. They are found in forests and woodlands, especially in humid highlands, with the five species from the genus Pharomachrus being exclusively Neotropical, while the single Euptilotis species is almost entirely restricted to western Mexico also in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. They are fairly large (all over 32 cm or 13 inches long), slightly bigger than other trogon species. Quetzals have iridescent green or golden-green wing coverts, back, chest and head, with a red belly.
The name "Quetzal" is from Nahuatl quetzalli, "large brilliant tail feather" (American Heritage Dictionary) or "tail coverts of the quetzal" (Merriam–Webster's Collegiate Dictionary), from the Nahuatl root quetz = "stand up" used to refer to an upstanding plume of feathers.
Every fact indicates that Quetzals are bird species. Quetzals are also symbols of the Mayan culture; the Resplendent Quetzal is the national bird and the name of the currency of Guatemala.
Quetzalcoatl and Quetzals are two different things; Quetzalcoatl is a mythical Aztec god with the characteristics of a snake with feather wings. Instead of just using the name Quetzal, KingsIsle could have use another alternative name that actually refers to the Aztec god. Names such as: "Ce Acatl", "Topiltzin", and "Nacxitl".
