My recommendations for enjoying guild wars 2 as i have.(600 hours played)
1. Join an active guild with friendly and helpful players to show you the depth of things as well as have something to do stuff with, from beginning to endgame.
2. If you can, start playing the game with a friend, or make some right away. Try to level a set of characters together. Learning how your combo fields/finishers work with another class and owning content/pvp/wvw or w/e you like together can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy the game and how much you want to log in.
3. Try everything. That means exploring, De's, Hearts, Crafting, Spvp, WvW, dungeons, exp modes, Tournaments, Mini games, etc. If you do this I'm 95% sure you'll find more enjoyment then a person who jumps in, tried on or two things of the above and then says "oh this sucks /ragequit"
4. Remember that the purchase of 60$ grants you unlimited access to a AAA mmorpg that is, in most ways, different from the others, and most definatly not a WoW clone like the genre has been full of.
5. Remember that this is NOT WoW. Do not expect to play it like WoW. Gw2 really does require a different mindset then other theme-park mmo's. For example. No kill stealing/node stealing means you can safely play with other people you encounter without raining on their parade. Therefore, you start to feel less threatened by other players and actually welcome them. Note that in alot of cases people Want to play by themeselves and you may be one of them initially, however after the "newness" passes, you'll find there are plenty of people who want to group up for zone clearing, champion mobs, jumping puzzles, and a myriad of other activities that are just more fun with other people around.
6. Finally, just try it, theres no better value for your money on the MMO market today. Yes the forums around different websites may be littered with trolls and the like. However once in the game, at least on my server (Darkhaven), I find it very difficult to find people who arent helpful or fun. Let me give an example to close: In WoW, out of 10 players, 6 of them will be trolls whom would rather troll you then help you. 2 of them will be friendly, and 2 of them will be silent. In Gw2, 6 of them will be friendly, 2 of them will be Trolls, and 2 of them will be silent. At least that is my experience in Darkhaven as i've leveled up and even at Endgame.
Hope this helps would be Gw2 players and/or existing players.

I put in almost 800 hours and just got burt out of the game. I think if they change WvW I would go back but until then I got my moneys worth.
Doh, your right. Was reading DF thread guess I switched threads without knowing it. lol
I love GW2 other then the gimpy troll Necromancer pet AI.
But, to say its community is good is a long shot, it has just as many trolls as WoW if not more. It is full of the people who are just burned out on WoW so they find the need anytime WoW is mentioned to completely turn into a raging douche.
It is also very similair to WoW in the way combat plays out except instead of strafing from side to side you roll/leap/jump.
The game is one of the first to make me fall in love with the flow of the UI, it is amazing.
I just hate when GW2 people act high and mighty on its better then WoW because its not, its just newer.
i hardly think you will teach people how to enjoy a game. it's either fun, or not. i never need a "fun guide" playing WoW, or AoC, or Mortal, or CoD. they were just...fun.
GW2 is boring. no guide needed.
I feel bad for you. I can easily go in the world and just explore every corner of a zone, listen to NPCs, talk to NPCs and enjoy a good event chain and do some hearts.
The only problem i have with GW2 is the story. I want to be able to do it without having to do anything else, just do story and that's it. ArenaNet really failed at this part...atleast they could scale you for the personal story mission and that would be possible. Also, the story is to soft, it need to be a bit more serious, kill some important characters or put them into trouble (kidnapped etc) and make good use of cliffhangers.
Sorry not only story, WvWvW also. It need some updates.
As a long time hardcore competative gamer I think the combat in gw2 is fantastic.
The pace of the combat is good fights arent to fast or impossibly slow, everything is smooth as silk especialy wep swaps gw2 probably has the cleanist wep swap around. It really is skill based not rng based / gear based the better player can consitantly win fights vs a lesser player. Overall I think gw2 might have the best pvp combat on the market however....
With that said gw2 is so freaking shallow, I had a ton of fun in SPvP had lots of fun in the tourneys (which btw is a great system including random teams in free tournies). Got full set of tourney token gear that looks badass after winning a few tournies, made it to rank 28 almost to 30 for yet another set of boxes with new looking gear I never got to see but its all pointless.
Where is the ladder? I dont mind having no gear to grind although Id prefer there was gear to grind and say what you will about wow arena being gear based but realistcly its not gear based you just have to get the gear once you have the gear you are just on equal footing to others in arena so basicaly its gw2 gear but it takes time to get even if you arent a high end player but you will get it. The fact there is no ladder to work for no gear to get nothing even different in the different spvp maps made me get bored of this game far to quick.
I am still happy with my time for money ratio as I did enjoy the game but it was far to shallow which is a shame because I honestly feel it has some of the best pvp out there in terms of balance / combat / skill
Another player made guide on how to enjoy GW2?
I Have to disagree with your comments here. I have been playing GW2 for three months and it is anything but an "on-rails" Game. It is completely the opposite. In my honest opinion. After playing WOW and WOW Clones for the last ten years GW2 is a breath of fresh air in a stagnating genre of game.
It is great having a "world" to explore without having umpteen fetch quests and go speak to this NPC who wants five bear arses. The D.E 's seem generally interesting and the PVP in WvWvW and Spvp are great.
If you have any interest in exploration, crafting and trying new skillsets on weapons then GW2 is definately worth the price.
However, it isnt a perfect game. It has some issues and there is skill involved unlike button mashing. I miss the trinity of DPS/Tank/Healer.
It is a different beast to WOW and its ilk and to me that is a good thing.
Thanks.

I see this come up a lot. If you are someone who is burnt on WoW, you will find GW2 to be the MMO for you.
It was a great game until most recently. I dunno if Nexon took over or what but something definitely happened.
The thing I'm waiting on is bug fixes. there are bugs right now that make my class impossible to play. Engineer.
The other thing I'm holding reservations about is their new bug/loot policy. Whichever it is they need a big fix to what drops. Can't progress even with the mystic forge items if you don't have the means to craft what you need for great end game play.
They were actually raised.

lol...a fun guide...like so many others have said....when you need to post this for a game, it tells you everything about it. I've tried countless times to like this game and "have fun' but it just doesnt work.
This is most certainly not an explorer's game though...I still have yet to find anything worth exploring...
Drop rates have been diabolical since the post lost shores event, salvaging rares has also been hampered since lost shores, why the globs and dyes have more than doubled in price. No announcement since lost shores that they reverted the drop rates back to how they were before then.
I have received more dyes, etc since the November patch.
