I wouldn’t make that decision yet, many of the answers given earlier in the thread are straight up wrong. I would honestly wait a couple weeks or so and read/watch some of the reviews from people that do games like darkfall and eve. The first reviews that come out after a day or so, won’t be very fair, positive or negative because of how deep the conquest, city building, clan/guild, ect, side of darkfall really is.

no not really but if you say so ok

Actually yes, really. You are sure to be dissappointed at launch if you're expecting much more.

Not really a crafter myself so not gonna comment on this

What types of items can you craft?  Armor, weapons, potions, siege equipment (limited at launch) and ships (limited at launch)

    Cities, kinda important i guess.

Can you customize items to any extent? by using better quality of rare metal you get higher ranked weapons (and armor), DF1 enchanting but not sure if enchanting is in DF:UW

Basically right, but enchanting let you customize the peice of equipment a lot. Adding stats, transmutation, protections, ect.

Are there varying qualities of the same item?  difference is rank r0 - r80 in steps of 10, but not much influence on the resulting range of the ttributes and speed cant be changed for example

Not sure why they would remove enchanting, so acctually their potentially is a lot you can add to a peice of gear

Does the actual process of crafting an item have any depth? nope

its pretty straight forward, enchanting requires you to figure out the recipes of the enchantment though

Can you, as a player, stand out from the rest for having exceptional crafts? nope

Wrong, I remeber when my guild got the mats to create the ultimate great axe, we looked for the best and most trusted ork crafter we could find, and his name was on that axe untill it the game ended or it was destroyed

2.) How is the game's gathering system? swing at the resource to gather with a chance of fail

Basically, but I must include gathering mats for enchating involved hunting specifc mosters of their mats.

What kinds of things can you gather? herbs, fish, stone, iron and more valuable and rare kind  of metal

Are there region-based resource nodes? no

Traditional resources, no. but certain enchating mats could only be gathered from certain monsters in the world. ( one example: A high level, very wanted enchanting mat could only be farmed effectivily on ruby the south-west continet.)

Are there varying qualities of resource nodes? no, wood is wood , iron is iron

Teirs of iron/ rare metals. Their was a High end wood used for crafint the ultimate bow.

Are resources depletable? yes but refill again

    3.) Is there farming?  nope

Could put a garden on your house to farm from but not the same as having a farm.

Can you grow crops, establish farms, etc.? nope

4.) Can you write books, letters, newspapers, etc.? nope

5.) Are there any art-related activities such as painting, playing music, acting, etc.? nope

6.) Can you interact with NPC's and befriend them to perhaps gain access to something? nope

8.) Are there puzzles, traps, locked doors/chests, secret passageways etc.? Can you make any of these as a player? nope (they promised traps on dungeons with UW)

Chests were in a lot fo the dungeons in 1.0 and theyve said their adding in traps and such in 2.0

9.) Is there any form of archeology? nope

Can you dig up lost relics or go treasure hunting? nope, there is a treasure map -> treasure dig-up mechanic

Treasure hunting was in 1.0 and they said their is going to be a ship added for looking for treasure on the sea floor or somthing.

10.) Is there item decay for a healthy relationship between supply and demand? there is item decay

11.) Are there trade ports, harbors, and commerce hubs that are naturally better for merchants? nope

They said they have markets in game already but not fully functional. Many clans held trade fairs in 1.0

12.) Can you tame wild animals? nope

    Can you breed animals? nope

13.) Is there a law system? nope

Not really a law sysmte but alignment to tell if your a pk or not

What is it like? Can you place bounties on someone's head? nope, nope

    14) Is there cooking?  yes, consumarables add temp bonus

Do you need to eat or sleep? nope

resting increased health, stamina, and mana regen

    15.) Is there fishing? yep

16.) Are there mounts that are necessary for carrying large amounts of cargo, like ships or caravans? nope

Can you steal these?  kill and loot  (to get the figurine which is the mount or ship in the unspawned form in bagpack)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWtiXRw1YLk

17.) Are there trade routes and regional markets? nope and nope

wrong, trade routes were in 1.0, would assume in 2.0 aswell, and theyve said their adding markets to 2.0

18.) Can you raise families? nope

19.) Can you have NPC helpers, like ones that harvest, trade, or guard for you? nope

20.) Is there burglary, theft, vandalism, etc.? nope

21.) Are there religions, deities, churches, etc.? Can you form pacts, establish cults, etc.? nope and nope

22.) With the new role system, if you are currently using a warrior role, does that mean you can't use magic-like or scout-like abilities? AKA, is there no multi-classing? roles are no classes, choose to specialise and if you dont like choose something else and wait for the small cooldown for the changes to take effect, everyone has access to all crafting and all basic skills

23.) Are there NPC societies, where NPC's actually do things to maintain their establishments? nope

24.) Is there wildlife in the game?  monsters

and all the wildlife in game? rabbits, rats, cats, ect.

Can one become a hunter? kill monsters for loot

25.) Are there campfires, tents, etc.? nope

um their has always been campfires lol

Are there any benefits to using them? nope

    cooking at campfires anywhere

26.) Is there a weather system and a day/night that affect the world in significant ways? there is but no influence so, nope

night and day system, got pretty dark at night, wether thats significant or not is up to you and what you can make of the night

27.) Are there taverns, bars, etc.? nope

28.) Are there hidden skills or abilities that one can only learn by exploring the world or talking to certain NPC's? nope

29.) Is there gear for other professions, like aprons for cooking, robes for diplomatic encounters, etc.? nope

30.) Do monsters just stand around or can they grow in numbers and potentially invade and conquer a town? nope

31.) Can you interact with objects in the game world? nope

How so? only at the banks and crafting stations and clan stone if you want to add something

32.) Are there any carrying capacity limits? yep

33.) Does gear impose any condition upon the player, like heavy armor making one slower? dunno about UW cause they introduced inertia but in classic DF nope, except of course armor has defense vs attribbutes etc

1.0 had an encumberance system, so wearing heavy armor made you cast magic super slow and be less effective. 2.0 will base armor off of your role

34.) Is the death of a leader (guild master) meaningful? nope

In seiges killing and enemys seige caller could break them. When my guild was smaller we would figure out the enemy caller and head hunt them.

Can an assassination attempt potentially destabilize a guild or do they simply re-equip themselves if they die? nope, everyone is equal on chances at  the battlefield

again, knowing that your guild leader/caller is dead can cause mass choas. or even knowing that someone thats really good just died and hurt moral

The races of agon are allies now, trying to survive the war between the holy and unholy, or somthing along those lines.

36.) Is magic treated as a list of abilities or can you weave and experiment with it to potentially unveil new effects? list of abilities

Typed up real fast while i had a chance, might have missed some stuff or not.

I didn't read the whole thread, so if someone already gave a nice explanation, just ignore this.

Darkfall is often claimed to be a sandbox game, which is only partially true. Darkfall has many features you would expect to see in a sandbox game, such as housing, player cities, open pvp(UW will have some safe zones, but they seem to be minimal, and should not affect pvp aside from new players, or players who wish to stay in low risk areas, such as crafters), full loot and economics. However, the thing that crushes darkfalls hopes to be a full on sandbox is the fact that the game world cant truly be changed. You can build up your city, but all the buildings are in predetermined spots, which takes it from being a sandbox city to just giant cookie cutter. Don't get me wrong, the cities serve their purpose and i rarely ever felt that it took away from the game.

Overall, i would say that darkfall is a sandbox in a similar way that eve is, however you can't decide where you put the sand, unlike in eve where you can place you stations and what-not freely. I'm not trying to say that darkfall has all the sandbox that eve does, but they do share their similarities.

If anyone disagrees with this, let me know and ill try to make it more accurate.

    check out Xsyon

however the guy that answered you every question is not correct in some cases.

For example there are regional ressources, you have danger levels for ressources ( more danger areas have better loot).

You have ofc tradehubs and these will be the 100% safe NPC cities and in the near feature you have local markets.

didnt check the rest of the list

Edit: checked abit more and even the guy answering in red has mistakes.

For example the campfire thing, you got campfires and you also can place regional banks that last for a certain amount of time, i used them to farm stuff and bank it. i placed it on a hidden location and when someone killed me i didnt lost everything.

Read the text in yellow for answers. I'd suggest Darthraiden to stop posting on these boards when he knows nothing about the game and clearly only has one objective which is to scare as many people away by lieing about the features.

    Yes

There is a game called Second Life that might fit you and Darthraiden perfectly. In that game you can trade, dance, make dresses and a lot of other things. it is almost as...erm...a second life. It can`t get more sandbox than that.

Understandable looking at your extensive wish list of features. The short answer is that no, there is no game with that kind of list, nor has there really ever been within the mmorpg gaming space.

Don't know if it's been said already but Perpetuum is worth a shot. Its UI is very similar to eve, but it has WASD movement and, in my opinion, more engaging combat as well as terraforming, base building, etc. The skill training is similar, but all of your EP that you earn over time goes into a pool and you spend it as you please (i didnt play EVE but for 10 minutes, but I am told you have to choose which skills to train up and you accumulate XP in those skills only, I could be wrong). Community is much smaller though, so that could sway your opinion.

    It was spot on noob.

    Not really.

I played for two years and sure as hell did not play the game as a "big PVP-arena". The game certainly could have used more depth, but to label it as an arena game is misleading and false.

Origins of malu and archage may also be worth looking at when they get released(or world of darknessm but i think this one's a way off).   Possibly even age of wulin/wushu but i wouldn't hold my breath that these are anything really different from the norm.

GOD you're so retardedly stupid i'm amazed, you have obviously not read the blogs the last 6 months. PLEASE stop posting here. EVERY SINGLE answer i found from the official darkfall blog. Please don't try to give out information about the game when you're either trying to scare people away by giving false information or just simply have no clue about the features of the game.

I'm guessing you were so terribly bad at 1.0 that you now have some sort of vendetta against the game after getting youre ass handled?  I'm amused.

Sure darkfall is not a full sandbox mmo like UO was but anyone denying that it has sandbox elements are retarded.

Read the text in yellow for answers. I'd suggest Darthraiden to stop posting on these boards when he knows nothing about the game and clearly only has one objective which is to scare as many people away by lieing about the features.

Don't let you misinform by  peeeps who wanna lure you playing DF for the wron reasons.

Darkfall is not a sandbox game  !

Especially the fact that this poster didnt know that alignment plays no role in game anymoreshows how much misinformation you can get listening to such guys.

Visiting the  official forums and read all the blogs didn't you obviously any good if you spread  such misinformation like DF:UW has a alignment system and negative consequences.

But i dont blame you. I blame AV and Tasos, iraki information minister. You must know that they misinform the community and everything they say is not certain and either they forget what the said before and change it without informing anyone.

(Do i need more proove on this other then they the very recent promise of  pre order last week and well the week passed and of course no pre order)

    Lets test it :

According to what you know, will salvage skill be included in lauch or not ?

According to what you know, will dying armor will be included in laucnh or not?

According to what you know what does the role "Primalist" contains ?

If it isn't a full sandbox, then it can not have sandbox elements.    Sandbox elements are all about design and not the descriptions that you have been reading in the blog posts.   Many of the elements in DF would be great sandbox features, but most are not designed that way.

Remember everything in DF is designed to supplement the " fast, paced PvP ".

wtf? Of course it can have sandbox elements without being a full sandbox, no game in history has been a complete sandbox so far if you have such retarded view of sandbox(maybe minecraft, but that is not an MMORPG).

And no, not everything in DF is designed to supplement "fast paced PvP", get a clue before you start spewing.

The whole idea with sandbox is that you have ability to shape the world around you and player freedom to do what you want. If we look at those points Darkfall was very much a sandbox, with the only limitation that building stuff was in pre-set location only(and this was a decision done on very good grounds, although it sucks a bit). But no other games offer a huge seamless world where you are free to do so much but still having consequences in your actions, except for EVE, but combat is much more boring there.

    You missed the point.

Sandbox or themepark are design and design are not made of features, elements as you call them, but it is the way they are implemented.

You can have identical list of features but one game can be a sandbox and the other themepark, despite they sports same features. The difference is how they are implemented, how they interact with each other and players - the design is different.

Well that is true I guess, however I fail to see  how anyone can think of DF as more of a themepark than a sandbox.

    Because of lack of depth.

There is basically PVP there only and anything else is just a "filler", same way for themeparks where leveling and story is core game idea.

Compare that to EVE - there is no endgame, the game is 100% horizontal and everything you do has an impact on the game as a whole and the game is founded on dependencies - crafting, exploration, mining, etc isn't just something you can do when you are bored of PVP, it is a vital part of the game and the game world.
