PS2 in a nutshell...LARGE nutshell

PS2!

First experience: Had to wait 3 days as EU client was bugged. PEople said there was a way to hack the .ini file on the US steam DL to openthe EU serves...but you lose all after they fix EU. So they fix it 3 days later:

1) First foot patrol expereince: Die. You will start off dropped in after a story cut scene, SOME REASON they drop you in right at an enemy base and 1 shot dead. SO you start a SECOND TIME back at your base...the real game begins (the hek SONY?) - After that odd start, I am no surronded by fellow foot troops all AFK. That is right, 50 or so men just hanging out what looks to be the rainbowiest techno room ever. Even if the chicks are there, the chick models are super manly. They did not change the body models for women.... So ok, lets move, big airships everywhere and cmputer stations to spawn one...no...I just want to get feel for combat, so I press M for map. I notice I can auto hop right into combat...but, I prefer to feel out the controls on foot. Ill walk.

As soon as you walk it (long way to go) there are aparently no life players that rolled sniper just waiting for you to walk out of the base shields....that is right, they are balls deep in your territory somewhere in the mountains just sitting there waiting for noobs to walk out not in armor...wow. OK, avoid that and it is time to auto spawn into their territory..

2) Dead again, you are sniped. HMMMM sniper does seem to have an advantage, an OP Advantage, as well, natrually it is an open world map, and since it lacks boulders and trees and objects (or absolutely useless), you are open game to sniper, so that forced me to LEARN ARMOR!

3) Got in a truck...it has 2 GIANT guns...sadly, this is strange warfare of the future so SONY pissed on all the details like caliburs. I THINK I am shooting 50 round cals, but not sure. BF free to play even gets this right. This game feels to child star wars like "here is a gun, now shoot lasers!" and it doesnt matter whos better unless it is a death star.... So that felt uneventful, and I just ended up sitting there picking off a few lost souls on dirt bikes.... and a few hits on flying objects, but im to weak for a full kill, id have to reload my truck mounted gun 6 times to do anything really threatful SIGH.

4) So I go it on foot, but this time more organized. If I die, may as well die together right? So I random squad up to more guys AFK. The lag fest and what seems hak fest was way to apparent. Guys half buried in the ground terrain. Guys shooting through walls of nature. Guys blinking in and out of existence but landing hits on you. Full invisibility (I think that is a class trait). Just not fun. All that in close quarters or open world. NOthing had a "lets strategicly stay here and provide cover fire. IN FACT THAT IS KEY ELEMENT MISSING, NOTHING felt strategic. Just sort of CIRCUMSTANTIAL. Like, oh, your in the open on ahilll, well I have a dirt bike so in this case, I speed past you hop off and shoot you. Again, Squads in BF2 were x1000000 more strategic than this pile of mastadon dump.

5) I saw CB video of guys in organized tank columns etc. THAT MIGHT work if you and homies all have L33T pcs all on same super fast connection all in synch...but your adversary, and the F2P model doesnt leave that a big choice. It is more like, AFK party, or exploit party (LOTS OF GUYS hiding shooting each other, then reserecting each other to farm points. Technically it is illegal....HAHA good luck finding these guys hiding miles deep ina canyon)

6) ALLOT MISSING.. IT felt flat. Not exciting, not exhilerating. NOt fun. Just flat. I mean, with all the models to learn from, big hint on games like BF franchise, the direct open world strategic competitor, I am shocked they fail so much. ESPECIALLY after taking players money. And poor EU that got shafted for paying for garbage for 3 days.

7) I tryed approaching this game from an mechanical point of view, Armor style play. The big galaxy class ffighters await at base to air lift 12 slots worth of seats. They are patient and it shows tact...but sitting in front of 50 AFKers with 1 guy hoping in every 10 min....that is 12 seats x 10min = 120 min of sitting and waiting for a full bird to take off...so I left and hopped into a light fighter, an airborn bird with 3 seats, all gunners.... Die at base border, cant target a thing due to lag or horrid hit box structre, or the fact my GIANT 50+ calibur guns do 2% damage on a guy on a dirt bike....YEAH that feels real...REAL STUPID.

I am uninstalling. IT just fails on every bench mark. Close combat sucks. not at all like those epic flag wars in BF Free2pay. LArge map warefare fails, as auto spawn and armor and snipers fill the voids of MEHness. base capturing is not feeling fun or rewarding. The death rate (you die 2 shots on foot, you die when noob team spawns something on you, you die for breathing, you die for loading in, you die because oyu are alive) is to high, and reward of kills to low. Even you pwn someone, the feel of reward is small, like, you may as well be shooting a wall, because your kill really doesnt matter on the gran scale of things. So it is like a large open game of QWARP...just try and move and not die...even if your team is winning you know your lame ass was not the guy difusing things...it just is re-inventing a wheel that doesnt need reinventing. IT should have copied the wheel, and just put different color spokes in between to stand out. DERP!

hit "insert" key to be put in a squad.

hit M and then click Squad Leader.

Deploy to Squad Leader.(Deploy has a cooldown but it beats driving or flying to the action)

No more afk's in base camp.

As far anything else you have said im new myself and cant comment on what im not familiar with. The fights I was in just yesterday morning had a convoy of 30-50 ground vehicles and over 100 people(just in my faction alone) pushing enemy held area's. AFK people are the last thing im noticing.

My main issue is sniping people 4 or 5 times(in the head/neck area) and having them spot me and kill me with a light assault weapon? That or when you sneak in behind someone and are cloaked and they turn and instantly hit you every time(regardless how close or far away you are). Appears to be a shit load of aim hacks going on. I played Cs decently so i doubt a bunch of mmo players are going to drop me as fast as they do before i kill them specifically when i got the jump on them and hit them multiple times without some kind of bs explantion.

  • tawesstawess LkpgPosts: 2,532Member Uncommon

Well... What can i say. Ofc you are goping to have people farming newbs to quickly boost their certs. You avoid this by finding people not afk and working together, or even better join a "clan" and let the more experienced players teach you the ropes.

Now for that i can say the sniper rifles are not OP. Until you master it you will have hell to pay and you will hate it with a passion, just like any other game with bullet arcs.

So in a nutshell, if you are a new player join up with people who know their way around the game and can give you a few tips or you will have a very long and death filled road ahead. This is how PlanetSide have always played and it have not changed here.

Also what faction were you and what was the weapon you were using in the vechicle as some are anti-personell and some are anti-tank.

  • sanshi44sanshi44 BrisbanePosts: 1,085Member Uncommon
On you bout saying snipers have an advanatge well they cant one shot u like they do in other games the only way for snupers to one shot is to get a head shot, and that can be somewhat difficult on moving targets especialy when you have bullet drop in and all that. Also they dont do to much towards the objectives if there chilling somewhere randomly killing people, also they will run out of ammo and need 2 get more which can be difficult in an isolated spcae.

you Could have downloaded the SOE launcher or PRO7 launcher... No need to run true steam if its buggy for somereason.

1: True, if youre unlucky you spawn near enemy's the first time.. bad luck, and femele models are slight diferent but they are pumped up bodybuilding models...not sweet barbie in a mini skirt waving and sending kisses to stun the enemy..

    2) Bull, you probaly were on the snow continent and even there is 90%hills and rocks.  both opther continents have even more places to hide (trees. bushes, rocks, canyons and so on) Snipers are strong in that they need 1 or 2 hit to kill you.. buit they are extremely easy to kill. it shows that your had no clue what to do ..welcome to a FPS...

    3) Sunderer... new player obvious...

and Im just going to stop here, while the game has some issues they are working on..90% of youre story is complains about you being bad at the game and blaming everyting around you..

the game aint for you..go play someting easyer and relax..it are games , try to avoid heart issues

Game of the year in a strong year for games

Joint best shooter of the past 5 years with farcry 3 (for its sandboxy skyrim like approach)

Best mmo of last decade (since eve)

The eu provider stuff is true. There are hackers, but its not as you exaggerate, and no worse than any other online game.

Everything else you say such as constantly killed by snipers is either bollox or a learn 2 play issue.

I realise this is more of a rage post than an actual facts piece, so I'll try to be as helpful as possible. (Also I won't bother mentioning the insane amount of bugs that still plague the game, which is another issue)

For new players the first thing you need to do is watch the tutorial videos. You can do that while the game is downloading and it will explain many aspects that may seem different or weird to new players. I'll try to help with your post though.

    1. There are three continents in the game. You usually spawn in a main base of your faction on one of those continents. This is a good place for people to form squads or platoons, check loadouts and classes. You are obviously bound to find lots of afk people there.
    2. Now, heading for the action. The easiest way is to directly orbital deploy into a hotspot. The drawback is that the method is innacurate, the drop is random and you usually end up in the middle of a cluster of enemies where you die fast. The good news, the next respawn will be with your own group of people and you can play normally.
    3. The sunderer (transporter vehicle) starter guns can damage all targets but not by much. So they are decent all rounders but don't excel at anything. Also keep in mind that this is a squad based game, thus you'd have multiple people hitting on called targets. If those guns were any more powerful, stuff would die very fast to be fun to use.
    4. Infiltrators (sniper unit) have a cloak ability that they can use it pretty often as it regens fast that gives them a terminator like effect. They are not totally invisible, especially close to you, but they can really blend in to the surrounding from afar. Typical close combat gameplay is to cloak, flank people and shoot them in the back.
    5. Shooting your buddies repeatedly makes your weapons lock (can't use any abilities). Not sure if that clears when dead. There is friendly fire though so careful where you shoot at.
    6. The game is F2P, so you can play as much as you like without giving them anything. You can certainly try it as much as you want with zero monetary obligations. Not sure what you're talking about when claiming that "after taking players money".
    7. The big birds are supposed to carry and drop squad members, ie your guild mates. You can even lock the seats so it carries only guild members. As a soloer your best option is to deploy somewhere and live with that inevitable first death. In this game you are bound to die a lot anyway, especially as a lone wolf.
    8. Most of the weapons don't have splash damage and for good reason. It'd make spawn camping with minimum resources easy as pie. It's bad enough as it is right now.
Overall, I'd say that this game is not really for you. This is meant for squad play, and lone wolves will suffer and die horribly on their own. And besides, you are a fresh character in an unfamiliar game, one would expect your death tolerance to be higher and not having the expectation to own everyone the second you log into the game for the first time.

My personal qualm would be that BF3 is not anywhere near the scale of this game, although I can't figure how they'd get away with destructuble buildings in a persistent world without any actual building back happening.

That is actually another flaw in the system. The game has a 3 faction system. Better of ignoring the one every one makes fun of. Roll blue or red, but good god stay away from purple unless you want to be looked down upon. The stats of servers usualyl reveal the Vanu as last place... sad kind of, just make a game, 2 factions. HAve a blast.

    Y U no learn SONY?

    [mod edit]

Anyways, I've had no problems with PS2 myself. It does get a bit boring after a while when played for more than a couple hours, but it does give my my FPS fix that I've been craving lately.

Game of the year in my opinion. In a strong year for games - farcry 3, Torchlight 2, gw2, dishonoured, Xcom.

And yes if you are constantly killed by snipers its a learn to play issue.

I kill more infiltrators than they kill me, especially on my light, but also on my medic.

Tip: you have a sprint key. You might also have a personal shield or jet pack.

Well, if you want a sum of the factions in terms of looks then

    • Vanu are the Crysis / alien looking faction
    • Terran Rep are the Flash Gordon type of faction
    • NC are the Autobot type of faction
Max units (battle suits) are a good representation of the faction looks

    Vanu

    Terran

    NC

Then you have more specific differences. Vanu weapons don't use bullets so they are faster and with less drop off. They suffer in the power departmnent though. Their vehicles are also more maneuverable but not as packing a punch or as sturdy as the other factions.
  • ShakyMoShakyMo BradfordPosts: 7,207Member
There's lots of ways to stop tanks as infantry.

Heavy and max can just shoot them from inside buildings.

The coolest way though is landing on one with a light and strapping c4 to it. :D

It will be that way for you for about a week. If dying bothers you, or is something that you can't take. You wont make it past the first week, which means you probably were not ready for a shooter of the scale.
  • FdzzaiglFdzzaigl Somewhere in nowherePosts: 2,306Member Uncommon

Sniping in this game is pretty hard from long distances, especially if you need follow-up shots.

I'd suggest following the advice of others here: join a random squad and port to the battle, or hit the "M" key to deploy somewhere and get into the thick of things or even change continents to deploy somewhere else etc (also via map, upper left corner).

So I don't think those critiques are fair.

I do think the game risks getting repetitive very quickly and the EU launch was indeed a mess.

Instead of people coming on these forums to rant on games and to make a list of stuff they claim as fact, why don't they just simply say, "This game is not for me"?  I know the answer, however this is just me "ranting" at a rant.

For the same reason people make about 100000 threads all saying the same things.

You know how many threads RECENTLY someone has complained that PS2 hasn't had an AH?!?

It's quite ludicrous.  But everyone thinks their opinion is OH SO VERY important.

My only problem is once again, it is a numbers game.. And by numbers I don't mean damage parsing or health and armor points.. I mean population..

Press M for the map. In the top right corner is a widget that says Territory Control.. There should be a dropdown menu on it.. Look for Continent Population.. Now compare those percentages to the continent situation.. Population directly correlates to territory control..

The cert gain has me scratching my head a bit too.. Levels seem so useless to me in this game.. You do not get a small stipend of cert points upon leveling up (yet you do when you get a medal, even a bronze medal gives you ONE cert point), yet the rate at which you gain them even through combat can be quite slow.. It's not so much an issue of being a "baddie" at FPS games because its so massive and just about EVERYTHING can and will kill you, so unless in a vehicle or defensive turret it is not likely you will go on a "tactical nuke" like killstreak before dying, which only further slows your gain down..

I have gone sometimes an hour or more with only 2-3 cert points to show for it, and thats even after some succesful capture campaigns.. The prices for perks seem so ludacris now that I have experienced the rate at which i am gaining cert points.. My next level for a certain perk is 1000 CP.. For one of my Carbine weapon types, 1000 CP.. It took me close to a week to earn 200..

Call me what you want, but I am one of those people who like to see growth, progress in my games.. Territory control? Nah, it just gets flipped nightly.. Hard to feel satisfied about that when the sweet victory lasts all of 30 minutes..
