I can't believe this is alpha. As other posters have stated, the FF titles have always had this special feel to them... I get that from watching this video.
The footage from Alpha already has the game feeling a lot better to me. And, I get that this is Alpha and certain things might be disabled, but an official preview should really be showing off the game at this point and using the absolute best graphic settings available. Don't like it when they do otherwise and then having to caveat that fact that graphics are dumbed down for Alpha.
Videos like this are classic, I just watched someone walk around for 5 minutes. If i were to play this i would exhaust the "fun" of walking around within an hour.
Is walking enough to constitute a 30 day subscription? and beyond? i think not.

Tell me what you want, but it looks plain cheap greenish f2p mmo atmosphere. Run around 3minutes and your eyes will get bored no mater how cool the water looks.

The fact that its an MMORPG makes it auto-boring. This genre is milked out, it doesnt matter if it looks shiny, has some "ground breaking" combat systems, advanced AI, incredible story line, super performance:system ratios or anything like that.
It will still be kill this, kill that, bring this, bring that., talk here and there so you can get your damn exp. Look how many AAA titles have come out over the past few years and none turned out to be what people imagined. I do very poorly explaining shit to people thats why i almost never post here, but new mmos will most likely never be what people expect them to be.
Games that are the most successful now, most players etc., are the "pioneer" ones, games that were the first to bring/or brought the best version of a certain mechanic to the table. Everything after them are re-skined versions which ,will most likely, never substitute an old game or atract a new player that has already tasted a similar product with a "different name".
And better yet, the trend of socialising and grouping is gone. Now every players think only about rushing. wants to do everything alone,solo and quick, be the best and rape everyone. This and the sh~t i wrote above is what will make this game end up in the recycle bin for most players that will try to play it.

Just helping out. It's easy to forget that how an individual ses things is not necessarily how everyone sees things. For instance, one jaded burn out does not make a world full of jaded burn outs.
The fact that loads of people couldnt settle in in any of the newer titles shows that those factors are commonly shared amongst the majority of players.

Yeah righto, At least i have enough common sense to see that: you can only look at how good the water is for so long before your bored to tears, Usually within the first hour.
What should be the real concern is:
1. did they fix they real issues people voiced in v1? 2. can they provide enough "fun" for at least 30 days of play time. 3. can they sustain that fun for longer than 30 days.

Now i played XIV from September 2010 to July 2011 apart from the amazing grapics the game to me was just so incomplete and all it was just Eye Candy . Now i have been following Yohsi P and i am really liking the direction the game is going. Already in Grid just removing that Stupid ramp next to the Leve Hall was a great step and the Crystal is now in what was the lake. This video was more for the faithful then the passer by . It was SE showing us the improvements that were made. Current Grid has dark sky no light through the tree lines and is way way to one shade of green. This version of Grid makes you feel alive in the 12 wood . the ambient sounds the colors of a lush forset all combining for a great experiance . I for one am very happy and excited to Beta test this in Mid Late December.
Now for a few Haters like Nitth , I would like to open your mind for a second because you have no clue what your talking about in reguards to the video just showing a guy walking around and how that doesn't justify a 30 day sub. Lets break down the cheap 15$ per month sub fee. there are 30 days in a month ( typically ) 15$ divided by 30 is .50 cents a day. Or to put that in even more perspective lets say you have a job flipping burgers at Mcdonalds and you make 6.50$ per hour in 2 hours and 30 mins of one day of work ( assuming you work 8 hours a day 5 days a week 40 hours total and there are 4 weeks in a month and a total of 160 working hours in a month unless you have overtime or only work part time ) you payed your month fee and still have a 1.25ish left over in 2 hours 30 mins! (sence the sarcasm )
One you will notice the lancer walk down to a dock , there is a NPC next to the dock , with the word TRANSPORTATION under his name. Witch would i dont know suggest you can ride a boat perhaps? Also there will be Chocobos right away you know yellow flightless birds that carries you off because you dont want to walk. OH and these Chocobos can also fight by your side and also have "jobs" ( use the internet look it up thats called research ) You can also teleport to different camps and cities at a cost . The game will not be a combat grinf fest. You can level up by doing quests also , and level up from crafting or gathering or fishing .The combat system is fluid TP is at full from the start . ALL the UI is customizable for PC and PS3 . PS3 menu will look like the XMB menu . Yoshi P has said they might add a second mode of transportation Flight . What exactly are you trying to prove with that train of thought? that $15 is not that much? $300 for a bottle wine every night wouldn't be to expensive for a lawyer or any other person of high income. The point is neither here or there and not what i was proposing as an argument.
There has to be enough fun, motivation or interest to keep paying the monthly sub if it comes to the point where you can raid once a week and do a few dalies everyday that doesn't justify paying $15. you can do that on facebook for free (minus the raiding).

That's great, but why couldn't they showcase at least some of what you said? we saw the tech demos for the first iteration, we know the standard they want to keep or exceed for the second. why not show case some of the other systems in conjunction with the current visuals?

I'm teetering back and forth with FFXIV, personally.
On the one hand, I love the lore, world design, Final Fantasy feel, art and music style, etc. But I positively don't want to play what is essentially a Final Fantasy-flavored <Insert Generic Themepark of Your Choice Here>. There were so many fantastic ideas in the original release that were horribly implemented, and instead of fixing them and letting them realize their potential they gutted them and replaced them with the same paradigms you find in other games.
I'm talking about things like the active battle system (with stamina), character collisions, levelquests, market wards. The removal of the first one alone nearly killed the game for me.
