[Preview] Dungeons & Dragons Online: The Netherese Legacy Unveiled

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

We recently had the opportunity for a guided tour of the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons Online update called The Netherese Legacy. We've got the inside scoop about what players can expect and much much more. Keep reading and then let us know what you think in the comments.

Last Thursday I was given a guided tour of Update 16, the Netherese Legacy, by Senior Producer Erik Boyer and Senior Community Specialist Amanda Grow.  Digital Communications Manager Leo Tan also made a cameo appearance.  Our adventure began by talking about the not-so-secret secret society, The Harpers.  After this humorous explanation by Erik we spent the bulk of our time in The Highroad adventure area.  This is a new area of the game located north west of the King's Forest.  Like the previous wilderness areas before if The Highroad is full of random encounters, like any good D&D campaign should.

Looks interesting. I enjoyed the lore of Netheril in the Erevis Cale stories, as well as the harpers through many others.

Its cool that people are still expanding the content on an 8 year old game, its truely a testament to D&D fans.  But for me personally, I couldn't get over those dated graphics to shell out more money to upgrade to this version (Eberron is still required).

The clock is ticking until NW and it seems Turbine knows it. This is a Cash Grab, nothing more nothing less.

I'll MAYBE check out DDO again when they release the enhancement overhaul that was promised soooo many years ago and not before.  By then Neverwinter would probobly be out and many good things going on there and likely won't ever think about DDO again.

Eberron needs cash patches or subscription to open content though, that means paying out just to get to the Forgotten realms part, which also means playing the horrible content from 2006.

This is 3 months before the next version of D&D hits us, Turbine has been rushing out patches to try and counter the upcoming exodus.  Don't fall for it, its still an extremely old game engine.

There is nothing dated about the graphics.  Name me a game with graphics that are that superior, right you can't.  The limited health/mana regen in this game is a drawback in my eye.  When you have a quit an instance because you ran out of one or the other....

never happened to me in party. :)

agree with the graphics. for that old game, they are so nice!

also can't name many games with so polished and smooth gameplay...

i doubt, that neverwinter (although it's modern game mechanics and visuals) will take place in my heart like ddo did.

Ummm.... WoW, Rift, TSW, GW2, SWTOR all have far superior graphics.  Turbine continues with the buisness as usual approach to things when the really need a reboot, that engine is exremely dated and is pretty piss poor.  The game is an eyesore to look at but what really kills me is the movement/lag/engine limitations.  For instance when you stun a mob they still move across the other side of the room when they should have remained in place.  Then there is the ever so problematic lag which the lag is "caused by you connection, computer, or service provider" even though one can play a top notch MMO with flawless preformance.

Why on earth would you quite an instance of mana/heath regen?  Health there are pots for or simplely have a healer and mana you have shrines which they limit them for a reason.

Models are extremely dated and the reuse the same ones, character creation options are still the same that were awailable 8 yrs ago, not to mention that their "art" team who does the armor are so bad that a 6 yr old can design better armor looks.  Maybe that changed in the Forgotten Realms expansion but doubt it.

I LOLed at that comment, not many games have as unpolished or rough gameplay in my book.  Never in an MMO was the raid wiped due to lag "on the cusotmer's end" like I have in DDO... well at least near wipe but many times there have been massive deaths that resulted from said lag.

when did you played it? 4 years ago? cus i'm playing from bulgaria and never, NEVER had connection isues.

    get better isp maybe? yes?

and please, don't compare it with games from the last one or two years. although i didn't said, that it's best looking mmo on the market!

if you try to read my post again, you'll see, that i said, that for game released in 2006, it looks very nice.

please, name me any game without minor flaws like the stunned mob, which is that great gamebreaker for you.

Actually same can be said about Everquest 2 graphics on Max settings has in my opinion better graphics then D&D, and eq2 came out in 2004 so...

D&D wasn't all that great to begin with, had some serious issues and some of those problems still exists, no need to coment on the guys ISP he speaks the truth, because it happened to me on a finer optics ISP 175down 175up and 15 ping so I guess it's my ISP.
  • bugse82bugse82 Member UncommonPosts: 184

LOL, EQ2 is one of the most ugly and clunky games on market. maybe some indie mmo's have worst engine...

Your statement was enough for me, thank you. :)

DDO has had some lag issues over the years but it is a rock solid game with lots of stuff to do. As for the graphics, they are fine-just a style preference.Great Game.
