Ships and siege equipment - It's not that bad...

GreymoorGreymoor ManchesterPosts: 801Member

"9) Have any changes been made to boats and naval warfare in general to help mitigate the threat of swimmers boarding your boat?

In reality the whole boat mechanic feature is being reworked. All boats have been remodeled and retextured, their crafting recipes have been changed and their visual effects have been revamped. Unfortunately though there is still a lot of work to be done and we want to rebalance their attributes as well as play around with some more ideas and mechanics before we add them to the game. Because of this, only entry level boats will be included at launch. The raft is now a figurine that drops from pirate mobs and can no longer be crafted. In its place, players can craft the Wherry which is a small ship with no cannons. In addition the Launch is a small ship with one canon that can also be crafted by players. All other boats and ships will be added post launch.

10) Have any changes been made to land-based siege weaponry such as warhulks and cannons?

Siege weaponry falls under the same category as ships. It’s a mechanic we think needs a lot of work and discussion before we add it to the game. Because of this only basic siege equipment, such as siege hammers and battle spikes will be included at launch. To keep things more balanced, city player controlled towers will also not be included at launch."

From these lines people on these forums and Darkfall have been infering;

1.) So many features are missing from the game

2.) AV have rushed the game in a short space of time

The reality?

We've read information of higher end boats and siege equipment being disabled. The rest of the interview shows new features they've added to the game. So number 1.) is complete nonsense from people panicing.

Clearly AV are still balancing these expensive pieces of equipment and will re-add them when they are satisfied the risk/reward for using each one is balanced. This shows they're taking their time with important decisions hopefully to get it right.

Why it won't affect us - at all.

Just like the original game, all resources will go into city building and NO CLAN will be willing to risk something as expensive as a warhulk for a siege. Even months into the game a massive amount of the materials generated by players will be soaked up into player holdings. The rarer materials needed to craft the higher end products will also require high end characters to farm them. This all takes time.

AV has this time to figure out balancing and reintroduce the top end siege equipment slowly.

It's not bad at all, and in a way a good sign because it means the changes must be significant, rather it not be in, than in broken.

This is something that is easy to pick up and bitch about and unfortunately a lot of people would rather post an attack on AV then actually think about it for a second. If they did think they would come to the conclusion that it may not make any difference and it is also nice that they are changing these things for the better.

There is the possibility it will be bad if they don't implement it by the time we will actually use them. However this is only a possibility so we should not assume it will be true or false.

It wont matter anything as no one will be able to afford any of those sorts of siege machines at release anyway.

Thtas a fairly lame excuse image... I bet people will be ready before the game is

Developers have not chance based on how some people react.  If they put this broke ships/warhulks in people will say fail, they wait and put the fixed ones in, people say whatever you waited to long to launch the game.  Bottom line is they see a problem, they openly tell us the problem, now they work on the problem.  Nothing wrong with this at all.

DF:UW has added features like the contract system, roles/schools, new lighting system, multi-core support, territory control via villages, new portal system and so on. They have also redone the map, improved the layout of cities, made walls meaningful and tonnes more. An yet people like you still spew bile because a couple of things they are remaking aren't in at launch when we couldn't use them anyway.

But still, I was very happy to read the news about limited boats and siege equipment. It means they're considering all aspects of the game in the long term, how everything relates to everything else and have a vision for a long haul. The same can definitely not be said about the first game. I mean seriously, there's nothing at all the would prevent them from porting over the existing systems, EASILY. But they know these systems have major flaws and they want to make them right, which is awesome.

My only concern is...well, them waiting until 3.0 to patch these things in lol.

The only joke I see is people trying to defend AVs removal of key game mechanics.   Lets face it...Darkfall UW is nothing more than a pay to beta for the pending Asian client.(i assume Mgame wants a complete game for their $ 3.4 Million USD investment) AV hasn't talked much, but in the little said we have too much pending. "balancing, tweaking and more thought" IE  Not finished

    Boats, Warhulk,Towers Cannons, Market

...and this is just for starters!!! There are many other questions that have gone unanswered by AV. Wonder why???

I was hoping UW would be fairly complete, not a shell.

I was hoping UW would be fairly complete, not a shell.

Then you should rejoice because it is way more then "fairly complete". They had a choice:

    1. Release the game now with siege machinery and boats as they are in DF
    2. Delay the game until they have redone the siege machinery and boats
    3. Release the game and add in the siege machinery and boats once they have been redone

They chose option 3 which is, in my opinion, the right choice because by the time we can actually make the stuff they could have finished remaking them. It is nice to know they aren't taking an easy way out and just leaving it as it was in the origional even though they know that by doing so they open themselves up for abuse. They have also added a huge amount to the game, far far more then anything that is temporarily left out.

I know trolling AV is fun for a lot of people but it is sad to see because the false information given by the trolls could put some new players off trying a unique and amazing game from one company that actually stuck to their vision and made a game that isn't yet another WoW clone.

Oh and please specify what EXACTLY is false?

Huge amount added? Its all fluff ... The only thing of note (still fluff) is the partial Contract System which relates directly to  seige. image

If you want to defend it do so....but not by yelling troll, opinion or generalizations.

there are many reasons to put ships and warhulks etc on hold at launch. One of them is what AV claim, but there are also reasons they don't mention that in itself is a good enough reason alone. They do it for a good reason because in reality none will be using ships and warhulks at the start of  the game

The seawater is acidic and will eat any ship that sails until a community quest is finished to cleanse the seas.  Duh.

Yes one dropped and one crafted,(rest of seige equipment missing) but that has what to do with the above question?

Nah dude, no joke.  The rafts and whatnot that are in the game early have acid resistant hulls and carry a neutralizing agent that as you sail will be released slowly to counteract the acid.  It's science in action.  Also, there are mermaids that live below the acidic surface that as you cleanse the seas will rise up and you can capture one to be the figurehead on the prow of your boats.

The coating is player manufactured via a special form of weightlifting, the clean and jerk.  It takes 20 or more players to make a hull resistant.  There is a special skill involving assisting a player to get it to work more quickly.  This also creates a bond between two or more players that will be used more further on down the road with other ventures.

As far as fishing goes, the seamen will take care of that.

So its another version of the "Meat Wall"? Wont there be a shortage of Seamen given the very limited ships planned for release?  I need my Lobster Bisque
