Problems with my PC

cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,067

I have an alienware aurora.  It has a i7 with 2.80 ghz CPU. 9 gig RAM. Odd thing was I always thought I had 8 gig but when the guy from Dell came to repair the PC in August and put back the RAM it now shows 9 gig RAM which was what I had ordered but somehow failed to notice was not what I got. Anyway it also has a Win 7 Home premium system. Card is Geforce 580 GTX.

In late July I was for sometime having this "driver has failed and has recovered" issue and finally it spread to even surfing I called them after trying to reformatt the computer about 3-4 times. The guy from Dell came and replaced the Mother Board and Video card. All went well until last week my GW 2 started having a kernel failing issue. The display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has recovered start to happen again. Then when I tried to play WoW I got a system lock down and to force shutdown and disconnect from the power source before the computer would actually power down. I also tried several drivers the 306.23 and 306.63 and 304.79 which was what I was using sicne August.

So I reformatted but the problem with GW 2 is still there. I am having no problems with surfing or normal watching of videos only games. I contacted Dell and they made me update my bios and chipset drives since I reformatted but the problem still persists with GW 2. So now they say it is the game so I am downloading WoW since I reformatted and The Secret World and I will check the two games out. If the problem persists in three games it is definitely not the game right ?

What I cannot understand is after they have changed the mother board and video card how this problem has come back what other thing could be the problem ?

When they swapped the mother board did they keep the same ram? Some bioses have diagnostic tests you can do when the computer first boots up, so do an extensive ram check if you can.
  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,067
Yes the RAM is the same. I did the diagnostic yesterday with the Dell guy on the phone and all was okay.

    PCI Bridge

    Intel(R) 5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub PCI Express Root Port 3 - 340A

    PCI Express Status Test Failed

Can the above failure cause the problems I am having. This is the result of the test I ran from the Dell site itself . All other tests passed including memory and the graphics card too.I ran a test on all the hardware on my computer.

Yesterday I did a complete reformat one where I booted from win 7 cd and deleted partitions including the one where the dell diagnostics were so I had to run the test in situ. On reinstallation the windows update installed the latest drivers the 306.97 which crashes my system really bad went back to 306.23 which crashed it just once in awhile.

It very well could be causing your problems. That particular failure points to a bad motherboard (the 5520 is one of the chips on your motherboard that lets the CPU talk to the stuff plugged into the PCI slots).

Now I don't know what diagnostic you ran, but given that you've already had to replace one motherboard and video card...

I would recommend a couple of things:

If it's still under warranty: get Dell to fix it. Ask them to pay particular attention to the power supply, since this is a second related repair.

If it isn't under warranty: you can get a new aftermarket motherboard (such as from Gigabyte or Asus or MSI) - that gets your computer back up and running and reuses all your other hardware. You will want to do a fresh install of Windows (the motherboard drivers will probably all be different) - and Windows will probably fail activation (because of a new motherboard). There will be a 1-800 number to call when it fails, you just call them and tell them that your motherboard broke and you replaced it - they will authorize you through and re-activate it over the phone.

In any situation, given that this is your second motherboard, and one video card, I highly recommend replacing the power supply. Dell ~probably~ won't do it under warranty unless it smokes and catches on fire, but getting a solid aftermarket may keep this from happening a third time.

I'd also really take a hard look at how you have the computer situated - make sure there is plenty of open room around the case for the fans to breath, and that you are keeping the inside clean and free of dust.

Have you already checked computer temperatures, fan speeds, etc. info with some program?

    If you haven't, http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Yes it is still under warranty but if it not ( this is for future reference) I cannot get them to come even if I pay them ? You mean Dell will only come if there is a warranty do they not give support after warranty has expired .I do not mind paying just want them to fix it. The computer is huge  I cannot lug it about and the PSU is 875 watts.

Yes I monitor temperatures all the time have one gadget and small program that monitors it. This card runs about 71-74 degrees when I play games. But Swtor made it run to the 83 degrees  and the alarm went off. I also have an alienware command centre which can increase PCI fan speeds  and the hard drive fan speeds up to 100%.

2 things I can think of.

1 you have faulty RAM, gw2 is very picky about faulty RAM, I discovered I had a faulty stick (nice corsair ddr3 and only 3 months old) VIA gw2, nothing else triggered it.
2 you have heat issues, mist likely with your processesor or possibly but less likely your gpu. The stock coolers with Intel chips are not particularly good, also there's a good chance the dell guy might not of fitted it right.

While your temps are a bit higher than one would consider optimal they are by no means beyond the threshold of the chips, regardless of the warning (those tend to be premature as a safety measure).

To answer your quesiton regarding dell support beyond what a warranty covers I did a simple google search for "Dell service after warranty" and came up with the following from the official dell site:

    http://premiersupport.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/expired_warranty?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

That said if I am reading it right they simply charge you for a phone call diagnostic (pretty useless considering who dell uses for their CS reps) and then send out a third party computer repair company who will charge you whatever their costs were going to be anyway.  So to sum it up, if you can't solve the issue via the help offered online you will probably be better off just taking to a local computer repair shop anyway and avoid the $60 phone charge from dell.

If your out of warranty, for god sake don't take it to dell, or any other large retailer, all you will get is the pimply youth on minimum wage bashing it with hammers and duct tape.

Ask around and take it to a good independent retailer, its like any trade, if you know what youre doing you work for yourself not same big faceless corporation.

Thanks Migu. About the RAM I did two tests one with the installed diagnostics that tested the memory and said it was fine and after the total reformatt wherein I removed the partitions so the place where the dell diagnostics were was also removed I went to the dell site inself and it ran these tests.

Heat wise you cpu wants to be less than around 40 well maybe 50, your gpu less than 80, bit under 70 would be better. Gpu can run hotter than cpu.
  • miguksarammiguksaram Member UncommonPosts: 835

Just to clarify, is your CPU or your GPU running at hte 70-80+ range?  In the case of the CPU these days that is extremely high and could point to your problem.  However if it's your GPU then my previous statement still stands (I figured you were referring to that based on the temps listed).

ShakyMo's listed specs are close to what one could consider ideal under standard air cooling (to include closed loop liquid cooling such as a Cosair H60).

As a side note, after looking at the internals of the Aurora case that thing looks to be an air cooling nightmare which explains the higher temps.

What is the make of your card? By chance , is it by gigabyte? Because I had a very very similar issue , same issues right down to a T , I RMA my video card a GTX 580 gigabyte and things were fine till I started getting the same problem again , so I tested every single part in my machine , turns out that my old Gigabyte vid card didn't get along with my Asus main board , the gigabyte stuff sucks really really bad , so what I did was I bought myself a GTX 670 Asus , no more issues , scanning the machine I found no more issues what so ever. I hope that helps you, because if you have the same card I did RMA it and ask get anew one buy a Asus 670 and sell the 580 , might not be 100% compatiable with your mainboard.

ShakyMo's listed specs are close to what one could consider ideal under standard air cooling (to include closed loop liquid cooling such as a Cosair H60).

As a side note, after looking at the internals of the Aurora case that thing looks to be an air cooling nightmare which explains the higher temps.

70-80 range is not bad considering alot of video cards can withstand upwards of 95+ .

I once stress tested a system with a shitty case and a 580 in it , left it on for three days at temps ranging from 80-mid 90's did not crash once , on games like BF3 direct x11 no issues , it's not a heat issue.

    http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2900

Follow this guide for installing drivers for nvdia and install the 304.79 beta driver.

If this does not work then you will need to log into to safe mode and uninstall the display adapter (don't delete the driver) reboot when done and start windows as you normally would. Windows will automatically reinstall the display adapter, once done simply install drivers.

Should the above not fix your problem it is likely a hardware issue rather than a driver issue.

Issues could include - Ram, CPU, Motherboard or on rare occasions it could be a hard drive issue. It may even be a defective GPU and yes it is possible to have run into to two faulty GPU's in a row sadly. Not overly likely but it is possible.

Before doing any hardware replacement run Memtest to make sure that your memory is compatible and in good working order.

If you find an answer in memtest or the above driver fix options above work, then great.

If not and you believe it is a hardware issue then let dell handle it since it is still under warranty.

Sorry misread your question , night shift sucks LOL ya CPU reaching 80 is high , alittle to high, could be his thermal paste , or heat sink screwing up, however , the case of the video card driver failing is not likely the CPU, it very well could be his vid card.

Well I do not know the make of the card its a dell piece they probably have the names taken off. Yes the temperature is of the video card.

Here is a rather happy happenstance the old card I had was a geforce 480 that actually ran to 93 degrees when I played games. When the dell guy came he put in the the 580 card probably because he made a mistake. So now this card actually runs cooler.

Yes the cooling system can only be controlled with an Alienware command center that is a nightmare  in itself. Whenever I reformatt it runs at 100% until I can get the command center up and running which needs netframe 4 I think which means way way after all the windows update. So it blasts like a mini jet engine for like hours.

I have tried 304.79 I was using that before but WoW needs 306.23 . I am playing WoW, Gw 2 and Diablo 3 now.Gave up on SWTOR it was hardlocking and restarting at the character screen. I do a clean install and I have also used driver fusion to completely clear the registry display entries and nothing has worked.

Send dx logs to the game company explaning your exact situation they may patch thier games for your hardware.  Worth a shot.

    Aoe:
Yeah older card like 4000 series AMD ran hot like upto 100.

But newer cards, 500 or 600 series nvidia, 6000 or 7000 series AMD, they want to be under 80 really.

If the 80 for the temperature is the cpu though, that is very high. If your cpu runs above 50 you should fit a decent after market cooler with some quality thermal paste (again a good independent will help you with this better than a mass retailer).

You dont need a fancy water cooler or anything, just get one of those with a big heat sink over the cpu and a side on fan drawing air into the sink.

    E.g. http://www.cclonline.com/product/63469/CAC-SXHH6-U02/CPU-Coolers/Xigmatek-Aegir-SD128264-Double-Layer-H-D-T-Cooling-System/CLR0083/

if your not comfortable fitting a cooler (you normally have to take the mother board out to attach a fixing plate), get someone to fit it for you.

Most of these off the shelf prebuilt computers have heat issues, they never seem to come with enough fans and whatnot. As a pc gamers it is well worth learning how to build your own, colleges should run night classes in it reckon.

I am a 50+ year old housewife and if I was still living in Asia I would experiment but I am living in Italy and my husband will not just let me take apart a 3000 euro machine. I can just manage changing a video card like I did on his machine the older dell but what you asked me to do would require a bit more finesse and courage worthy of bearding a lion.

The core temperature is about 41-43 degrees celcius ; all 4 cores. The video card is the one that is around 74 degrees and went to 80 + on SWTOR only. D3 used to run hot it but yesterday it was running at 71 degrees probably they improved that issue have no idea have not played it for months , just installed it yesterday.

When a game is playing the core temps go up to 54 degrees.

    Your temps are ok

Your issue is something else, I was alarmed the cpu was in the 80s but its not, so don't worry about it.

If you don't have case fans you might want to fit them (no harder than fitting a video card) one at the front to draw air in,one at the back to blow it out.

But it looks more like a memory fault to me, especially with gw2 as gw2 is very sensitive to memory faults.

Dell certainly will come out on off-warranty, but it will cost a pretty penny, both in labor and in parts (they mark up repair parts a lot, sometimes more than double the original cost). You may have better luck with a local shop. But if price is no object, then just call Dell out.

Well it has become so bad now I cannot even surf the internet without a BSOD or even open some random folder before the computer restarts. Could this be a intel chip the processor itself deteriorating ?

This does sound very much like you have some faulty RAM. Memory can pass basic tests and still be faulty, it has happened to me before. A good program to try is memtest86 (memtest86.com), it runs from a bootable floppy or DvD/CD and is free. Takes up to an hour or so to fully test the RAM, but it will probably find errors faster than that. Even if it passes the test at least you will be sure it is not the RAM, or if it fails you can get it replaced.
