I don't mind events in-game. What I have issues with is rather that you have a game world (e.g. fantasy themed, science fiction themed, etc.) with its own lore, history and people (NPCs) and then you implant some real world events into it. I'd rather expect the events revolving around in-game aspects (e.g. lore/history/NPCs).
As an example: take some high fantasy themed MMORPG with a polyteistic background and then have some christmas event or easter event (e.g. easter egg hunt). If the game world resembled more the real world (on the inside as well as the outside) this wouldn't be such an immersion breaker. So I just get the feeling of contemporary humans in funny clothes.
These kinds of seasonal events can be fun. The first time around. But that's it. Additionally I find myself not playing at these times of the year anyway (call it some kind of evolution) thus I miss them due to the timing (but I don't miss them events ,) ).
hey mr.TheAncient, i dont give a shit too about gods and fantasy stories, just having fun doing something different from the usuall, if something is annoying i just avoid it, but ok i didnt found anything annoying, f.e. i live in Greece and nobody has the mood of Halloween, we have something similar at the end of February but not this kid-based mostly for adults.. but its not bad getting some bonuses or some extra kewl skins ^^

I find seasonal events awesome. I love when games do them! You don't have to have a religion to enjoy halloween. In japan, 'christmas' is also celebrated, yet the majority of japanese are buddhists.

See, I'm an atheist too, probably older than you, and people like you really get on my tits. If something harmless falls outside my beliefs it doesn't mean it's inherently wrong - it's a big, big world out there, and I live in it. I think you should stay silent, if the sight of other people enjoying themselves so upsets you, and instead try to grow into a mature, balanced person who demonstrates the admirable attitude of "live and let live." Your objections to other people's fun are petty.
Thanksgiving means nothing to me, but it doesn't kill me to enjoy the enjoyment of others. Christmas, Eid, Passover - it's all the same to me... it's just people from another culture sharing a happy time at the same time I happen to be around. Obviously you hate that, since it's "anathema" to you (ironic, since that's religious terminology) but it does you no harm to go along with it. Stop being a misery guts, and act like an adult. Oh, and it's Atheist, not Athiest - fancy being a proud, middle-aged Atheist all this time and not actually being able to spell it.
As for being "shoehorned" into MMOs, so what? How many other topics have I seen over the years in game chat which have no relevance to the game itself? Politics, sport, films, music, whatever... Seasonal events are a means of bonding a community through a bit of harmless fun, and if you have an issue with your delicate sense of immersion being broken, log out and don't play for the duration.
