Playspan Hacked, and the hacking potentially affects a ton of MMOs.

I did a bit of digging, and found that Playspan and Ultimatepay are connected (at least as corporate entitiies), so if you have an Ultimatepay account, and feel the need to lock down some MMO accounts you have, change the password for that along with any MMOs connected to Playspan, which appear to include a number of games.

EDIT: Just editing this original post. I based my information off of the report at Develop, but wasn't able to update my post till just now (fell asleep, bad form really). Updates over at Massively (http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/10/security-breached-in-playspan-hack-multiple-games-affected/) and through commenters here indicate that some of the games listed aren't connected to PlaySpan anymore. I apologize for getting overly paranoid and scaring the heck out of people. That said, if you did have a PlaySpan account with the same or similar credentials to a game account, you may want to change your passwords as a precaution.

If DDO uses it, then so will LOTRO. So yes, it very much looks like Turbine will be affected too.

Strange the article of the OP didn't mention that, as DDO and LOTRO are much larger than EVE Online.

Especially due to the Freemium model and the huge Cash Shop.

So I have to start changing passwords yet again. Getting tired of this crap. :-(

Honestly, and I'm just thinking worst case scenario here, this might affect MOBAs too... I can't figure out what games are connected to Playspan, but I do remember that Ultimate Game Card (a playspan product, I guess?) and Ultimatepay are used as potential payment systems for a bunch of games from developers big and small. I'm currently in the process of changing all my passwords on every MMO I've ever played.

This is where a Password manager (like Keepass) comes in exceedingly handy, I guess.

Wait, is this for your game account or only if you have a Playspan account?

That's my current hassle right now. Not a lot of info regarding what exactly's been hacked other than playspan User IDs and passwords. if you use the same ID/ password combo on multiple places (or used to), then you may want to change those.

I'm having a fit of paranoia, so I changed all of my passwords as a countermeasure, including my Ultimatepay account information (which I use to get crysta for FFXIV). Honestly though, until the extent of the damage is known, I'd rather be secure on my 20+ MMO, MOBA and game accounts (gosh... that's a lot of passwords) than worried.

A relatively irresponsible subheader to that article. To allay some of your concerns as a result of your 'digging' here is the latest news on the EVE Online news page:

    Dearest News Hungry Space Pilots,

There have been some misleading articles published this afternoon regarding a breach at a company called Playspan. CCP has no current relationship with Playspan. The only relationship we have ever had with Playspan is that in the past is they have resold ETCs.

We do not share login information with any other company. The only way your credentials for EVE could be at risk is if you had set up an account at Playspan in which you re-used your email/EVE login credentials such as your username or password. If you have done such a thing we suggest you change your EVE password as a precautionary measure.

Yeah, I don't have a Playspan account so if it's Playspan user accounts only then I wouldn't be affected.  However, if it means that the games themselves use Playspan for something where my account info would be used, that would be a problem.

I'll probably play paranoid myself and change them anyway.  Always good practice.  But it would be nice to know if it is only people who actually use Playspan that are affected.

EDIT:  I just checked the link that Nadia had posted and the update says that ArenaNet is not affected in any way.  Thanks Nadia!

Yeah, I read about the hacking. It's fucking annoying as hell, but I guess nothing much to do against it as a player except changing passwords and such. But goddamn irritating.

    Heyo.

Thanks for the heads up. I overreacted, and I apologize for not properly vetting my information or updating it in a timely manner. I've amended the original post with an apology and explanation for my absence for the past 8 or so hours.
