Your site design is too busy, even without ads.  Enabling ads with your current layout, is just distracting.  What makes it worse is that the ads you guys tend to show are animation-heavy, so there's all this extra movement jumping around the screen.  In fact, even with the ads disabled, your site still looks like it's 80% advertisements anyway, which is just comical.

Fix your site design so that it's less obnoxious, and I won't mind the ads.  If you want examples of good sites that I have whitelisted, here are a few fairly relevant examples:

    slashdot.org

    arstechnica.com

    penny-arcade.com

I got a chuckle out of this - because what's the first thing you see on slashdot with adblock disabled?  A pair of flashy WoW ads.  Heck, even one of the ads that displays here at the bottom of forums displays as the header on slashdot.

Arstechnica has a flashy banner ad in their header and an annoying eBay animated huge square over to the right.

Penny-Arcade's sporting the GW2 ad from here in their header and has another animated skybox WoW ad in the right column.

So I can't see complaining about animation heavy ads when the three sites you listed are also displaying animation heavy ads (in two of the three cases, the same ads as here).

If you turn adblock off, it adds four ads to the main page.  It adds five ads to the real time forum page.  It adds four ads to the post page.

Turn it off on PA, it adds 5 ads on the front page.  Ars adds at least 3 (it's hard to tell, because everything looks like an ad on that site).  SD adds 5 ads on the front page.

So yeah, while I can understand not liking the full background image ad - I still had to get a chuckle out of the three sites you offered up as doing it better...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I been on this site for a good long time. I got to say I never used an add block software.  Some of the adds I actually found interesting.  However 15% of them I find offending, like all the soft core porn adds that look like half clothed teen girls for promoting a game, and then you got the adds that have so much flashing on them it is almost enough to set off a seizure.

Now that being said, I usually overlook the adds to get down to the meat and bones of this site and that is the forums.  I learned that 90% of the columns and videos show so much bias to certain games it is not funny. I learned who I can trust for a review, and who I cant trust while watching a video. Some days wondering why some of these columnist even get paid as you can go to youtube and watch the reviews or facebook pages and get the same content they get paid for on this site for free, seams like one columnist got canned for doing the same thing in the past, but now its promoted that way.

Now I read down through what 13 pages of bull hockey, and I will call it that.  I seen threats back and forth from user after user, but you know what I not see one person named user deleted yet on any of them.  So to all those making threats not come here, go ahead and and delete your account, you might as well as you lost all credibility if you don't.

I will say this if I got to pay for this site, all bets are off. I hope they don't go that route as I come here on a daily basis. It would be a shame.

Well, I see this banner as well - but having slow PC at work means I do disable every ad everywhere, be it news site or mmorpg.com. Slow PC is slow PC, my Firefox freezes sometimes on innocent news article (ctrl-alt-del helps...).So, I should either ignore mmorpg.com at work or browse it without ads.

Staff may blame and curse me, but I choose a bit faster browsing without ads.

Slashdot is also a fairly streamlined site, and the ads are located in non-obtrusive parts of the page. Yes, they have animated ads, but they aren't overpowering the actual content of the site. Also, as a side note, they give you the option of disabling ads if you contribute to the site with comments and mod points and such, so most of the time I still don't see ads.

Arstechnica has a flashy banner ad in their header and an annoying eBay animated huge square over to the right.

Ars Technica is arguably the worst of the sites I mentioned, especially after their last update a few months ago. That said, the ads are generally obvious, and not too cluttered. The page is pretty cluttered these days, but it's still much cleaner than this site's main page.

Penny-Arcade's sporting the GW2 ad from here in their header and has another animated skybox WoW ad in the right column.

Penny-Arcade is an example of a site being able to have the flashy banners if the rest of the site is designed with simplicity in mind. The actual content is straight-forward, and the ads are always in two locations. Sometimes they are distracting, but not in a way that keeps me from wanting to visit.

So yeah, while I can understand not liking the full background image ad - I still had to get a chuckle out of the three sites you offered up as doing it better...

On a side note, the full background ad they use here is completely blockable as well, so I only see it when they update it with an entirely new game, and in a new year, due to the image naming conventions they use. In all honestly, even the full page ad in the background never really bothered me much, and I only decided to block it after they pulled the big red banner trick today.

what does deleting a persons account have to do with them whitelisting or not whitelisting a url in their ad blocking software?

people dont have to disable their account to stop using the site, all you do is manually logout of the site, and delete it from any bookmarks or set it to be disallowed on your pc browser. not hard to do, or simply logout, delete the url from save and never visit it again.  much like users do for games o-O

It does not matter if you click the ads.  We sell ads based on impressions, not clicks/results.  So even if you don't click the ads you hurt our entire site by running a blocker.  Running adblock on a site that supports itself with advertisements is no different than downloading pirated movies, music or video games.  You are in a sense stealing our content that we work hard to create and pay to an entire team to create.

This is stupid. There are a myriad of reasons one run a AdBlocker. Most already mentioned here. Sure you can whitelist sites, but calling your visitors thief's is plain stupid. I went from pro- mmorpg to anti-  in 1second. so. Good Bye! I ain't staying on a site that, was it the CEO?,  accuses me of theft. If you are so desperate, find other ways of maintaining the site. But never ever accuse your visitors of being thief's.

Not to mention, why do any of us care if we lose credibility with him. WE lose credibility if we don't delete our accounts? That was a bit of a ridiculous thing to demand. He should set the example if that's how he feels.

His comment definitely wasn't really well thought out, but I just chalked it up to a poor choice of words.  The fact is, I don't come here because I care about their content anyway.  Most of their writers are pretty bad, and obviously (hopefully) not actual journalist.

I feel offended by your statement. In no way me visiting this site with adblock on or off is stealing your content, you do stand as a free site right ?

On another notice if you sell ads by impression and not clicks, how does the client determines if their ad will be a success on your website ? Dont they use statistics like, website visits per day, month ? or site activity, site members ? I think they (the customer) know the risks that some ppl use adblockers and their ads wont be seen but still, i bet they have statistics that it will still be worth it based on some other stats.

I feel as if this is over dramatized comment. I whitelisted you guys a long time ago but blocked ads again just to see this banner. Ouch, this hurts my eyes worse than any banner I've seen.

If they don't do what? Advertise? Or call the community here a bunch of thieving pirates? Which one are you referring to? I think we all get that the site needs advertisers. But I'm pretty sure Tardcore was more or less responding to the part about us being called pirates by the site admins. Sorry, but I'm also taking offense to that one myself.

Ad Blocker stays. Couldnt care less about the news articles. They are usually a day late and offer no new insight. The opinion pieces are basically advertisements anyway. Forums are a good trash novel, guilty pleasure lol. There are some really cool posters here and I'll miss them if the forums close but life goes on.

Didnt read all the replies but fwiw, you can rt click the big red banner of doom and get rid of it permanently in the settings.

The ads here are really not bad, the layout seems fine to me. I haven't felt the need to use adblockers lately for any website I visit.

Anyway, you should really considering offering some kind of monetized ad-free experience, it gives people an option if they wish to continue adblocking but still want to support the website.

Just don't make it a P2W system with forum PvP gear or stats :)

I wish people in this forum would be sensible when posting the same way they feel hurt by the Admin's post, it would make these forums a far better place for discussions.

I might have contemplated whitelisting the site but the security of my PC comes first and then for you to more or less call us thieves and pirates pretty much sealed the deal. So now not only am I still running my adblock but I just blocked your banner as well.

Figure out some other way of making money from us.

And the other 1,835,365 members of this site will all go down in flames because of the "bad ads". Get a grip.

This is a terrible excuse for the "give it to me free" mindset. You can whitelist MMORPG in your ad blocking software, like Mike suggested. Still works to give all your other free sites advertisement free.

Truly, if your computer's safety was so prominent in your mind, you would not be on the internet at all. Who knows where the next virus will come from?

I have been on this site since 2006. NEVER in my time here have I received a virus from MMORPG. Will it happen? It could. It could also happen from ANY website one visits.

I am sorry for my tone in this, but I am sick of people expecting websites to operate for free when they know very well that cannot happen without ads. These ads specifically are banner ads. They do not pop-up, pop-under, or redirect you to a totally different site. They are not 30 second videos one has to sit through in order to get to the site. They are not intrusive ads that scroll with your screen.

Also, they are strictly MMO ads. There are no viagra, political, accounting software, or porn site ads on here. If one cannot "afford" to ignore the ads without blocking them, you shouldn't be here. After all, this is what it really boils down to.

If one is so concerned with "bad ads" messing up their computer, please visit only those sites where you pay a premium for it, with no ads allowed. Otherwise, I call bullshit. You like thinking you are "getting one over" with your ad blocking software.

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The internet routes around damage.  It's both a technical attribute, and a metaphorical one.  If this site dies in a fire because they can't make enough money to fly out to game conventions and stuff, the community will go to a site that does.  It's pretty simple.

    My 2p here.

    1. Whitelisted this site, ads are not bad at all, almost didn't notice them. Will change I'm sure but so far not bad. I will keep it whitelisted until the ads are noticible.

    2. Admin calling us Blacklisters "pirates" (I hate that term, we are NOT "pirates", we share digital files MEANT by the actual design of computing to be shared without loss of said files by the host therefor NO LOSS OF ANYTHING) a bad move for sure. Almost caused me to delete this site from my favorites to never be visited again. But I can't get mad when called that because I see no problem with it. Kinda like someone calling me a "pasty faced white boy". There are better ways of describing me but no offence taken.

    3. A question to Admins: After asking us to whitelist, if you allow a malicious ad to compromise your site and our computers will you take responsibility for any damage done? Just curious.

Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.

It's a little strange and ironic that you can allow the specific adblock element if you looks via trial and error, but still keep all other ads disabled. I meant, on most sites I like, I allows ads, but because they're the simple images that are static banners. I don't think I'll ever allow anything else every again honestly, especially not anything with a script.
