I disagree. In other MMOs you can be better than other players by obtaining the best gear and being able to accomplish things that are not possible for them. I want recognition, I want to be known as one of the best in some catagory. This game does not offer that, the game has absolutely no purpose at all. There is no benefit to being level 80 when you could just be level 10. This game is really confusing and it isn't looking like it will have a bright future.

I'd love to know the name of this MMO you can play where your character will end up being totally unique and more powerful than all the other players around you, because afaik any player in every MMO out there can at some point attain the same gear, same points, same achievments, same everything as everyone else around them.

If the OP has to ask "whats the point" then playing MMO's aren't for you.

SWG Pre-CU, EVE Online need I say more?

There are MMOs where you build your character.

WoW, EQ, Rift, They are the theme parks. Your world is laid out for you, you only play in it, since you don't build your world, you focus on building a character.

Then there are MMOs where you can focus on building the world you play in. The players themselves become and build the content. That is their play.

THese are the games this poster above mentioned among others.

Then there is GW2. It's really neither.  It's tecnically a themepark, but it's limited (by design) in the area of building the character .  You have no impact on your world at all. But that's not uncommon in Themeparks.

I've been playing mmos since 1997. In every successful mmo, there is a way for players who work hard to be recognized in some way. Guild Wars 2 does not have that. If you don't understand my point, you don't know shit about mmos.

In other games players "can" obtain the things that you have, but the reality is that most will not be able to due to lack of time and/or skill. Therefore, you are seperated because you have put in the hard work.

Why do you keep ignoring the fact that even though you dont like the way it is, there are things to show off.

There are 80 or so levels in pvp and there are tiered armors in it. A person walking around with a kick ass looking armor has mroe experience than someone starting with default pvp armor and can show it all they want, they dont get an advantage for it but if another pvp see them they will go WOW.

If a person sees someone with a full set of arah dungeon gear and a legendary weapon they will also be amazed by it.

If someone is with a full WvW set people will also be impressed by it.

All of these sets give you recognition. The only difference is that they dont give you better stats, the same way GW1 was.

None of you are getting the OP's point. There is no Character Recognition in this game. You don't need gear to be recognized. In WvWvW you are just a number, in sPvP you are just another red or blue guy trying stand in a big circle the longest to take a point.

This games PvP is great but trash at the same time. This is supposed to be an MMO and MMO's give you some sort of character recognition.

ROFL! Really? Quoted from you dude : I disagree. In other MMOs you can be better than other players by obtaining the best gear and being able to accomplish things that are not possible for them.

If that doesn't mean you need better gear than other to be able to beat them I really don't know what you're trying to say here mate. Please explain to me. The game isn't laking any content at all, hell there's more content that is working in this game than some other MMO at their release. Way to improve?? I'm not sure what you're talking about here but gear won't make you improve.... If you can't be a good player now, gear won't change this. It's how you understand/learn the game that will make you a better player.

Why the need to get something to "Show off" yourself?? People who are good pvper don't need that kind of stuff because people know them, they made a name for themselves by being a top player. People don't recognize them because they have that cool looking armor/weapons, they just know by the name. So what you really what isn't really recognition, its more the gear that will make you stand out from the crowd. Guess what, top pvp players doesn't care about this stuff. Your name is all you need.

No you dont need to say anything more. You clearly dont understand theres a difference between themeparks and sandboxes.

Why people in this community continue to try to mix them together is beyond me.

They are basically two completely different genres, none being better than the other, just different.

Finally people are seeing what I have been saying since Arena.Net said they were going to make GW2. Arena.Net and NCsoft have no concept of end game whether it is PvP or PvE. Everyone laughed at me and said Guild Wars 2 would be different from Guild Wars 1. whelp here it comes

    "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Pretty sure Arenanet has a very good concept of endgame. Guild Wars 1 is a fine testiment to that. Go play through GW1 and try to sail through all of its content; it will take you quite some time. Saying "I told you so" only solidifies that you are nothing more than a blind hater. I think, in fact that most of Ncsofts published titles have a large amount of "end game". Look at Aion. Love it or hate it aion has a TON of content. Every content patch they introduced several new zones with hundreds of quests, new world bosses, several new instances, new gear, skins, housing, etc etc. Aion may not have been the game for me when i played it for x months. And the fact that it is now F2P and still maintains its servers and can push out the same amount of new content at a regular pace is impressive. Lineage II is another good testiment to Ncsofts knowlege of endgame. GW1, with every new expansion, added a new map to the game that was either equal in size to the original or larger. They pretty much made an entirely new game to add on to the original. We might as well be on Guild Wars 4. So I'm going to have to disagree with you, though you obviously won't care and will just continue to spout hate.

We do get the OPs point.  We also get that he's probably just in the wrong game if he actually plays this.  That would be his mistake if he does, the game seems to play reasonably close to as advertised to me.  No plan survives all the way thru so I'm sure the game isn't quite what it started out to be but it is close to what they've been saying/showing for the past 6 months or more.

I don't find the game boring.  I do find the game fun.  No game suits every player, just time to move on for some of you and many should never have considered this game in the first place.  That's plain as day.  Doesn't mean the game is doomed to fail or anything remotely close.

You play coz its fun? I do agree though the lack of progression that shows all the time you put in is a turn off for many people.

I've always been absolutely perplexed by what people believe is going to hold them to this game w/out some sort of more evolved character progression. Character progression is pretty much the linchpin of MMOs.

Even an MMO w/ a great combat system (which i personally don't think GW2 has, but whatever) is still a shell of combat system compared to the variety of other game genres.  Without a strong character progression it's just not going to keep most people's attention very long.

  • neonakaneonaka Smithsburg, MDPosts: 777Member

I think all of you are cry baby whiners.

GW2 has no content? GW2 has no character recognition?

GW2 has nothing to do end game?

If any of you can produce me a screenshot where you are standing with a full suit of the dungeon token armor on while holding a legendary weapon of your choice then everything you are complaining about is invalid in my eyes.

Not a single person in this entire thread has even began to scratch the surface on any of those goals. I know because the requirements for these items are on a scale of difficulty so insane that many will never see it.

Yet you want to sit around and say GW2 has no character recognition. The first time I see a player with the items I named above equipped I will personally send them a tell to ask where they are so I can come personally face to face tell them they are a bad ass and earned respect.

Now stop crying and go get "recognition" for your character.

Nope, not missing anything.  Basically you're 100% correct, its a game made for new age socialists who loathe the idea of putting in work towards something that would gain them any benefit over others.

Edit: Unless that benefit is purely aesthetic, then its A-OK (logical dissonance what?)

Socialists? The point is that your personal skills should be more important than your gear, nothing else. It is called "fairness" and makes PvP a whole lot more interesting, unless of course you suck at playing but have plenty of patience.

The point of the game is to have fun.

I have to agree that there should be more ways to elevate the best players in PvP though, like putting up a statue of player of the month in Lions arch or something.

It is funny when people use " working hard " when talking about a video game.

  • KhinRuniteKhinRunite ManilaPosts: 879Member

I'd actually advise anyone who has a "powergrind at endgame" mindset (character progression, if you wish to call it) to simply stay away from GW2. You won't find anything to satisfy you here. This is a game where you build skins, not stats.

I see two main reasons to play GW2:

1.) Have fun. The original goal of playing a game, which was apparently diluted by MMORPGs.

2.) Look good. Don't expect a stat progression like most other MMOs. Like someone already said, if you're looking for recognition, show us that armor set.

I'm sure longetivity isn't an issue for the people who are satisfied with GW2's endgame design.

Only for post Wow players, some of us do remember when playing was a full time work with at least 8 hours a day put in to be acceptable.

Which funny enough is why I like GW 1 & 2.... I dont have time for M59 or EQ anymore.

It's not about crying in fact  you have it all wrong. The cry babies are those that can't put effort into making their avatar stronger or better . The cry babies are the ones that want all classes to be balanced in all aspects and all gear of same type to have the same stats etc etc so it fair in pvp.

I'm sorry but i will not grind a dungeon becuase i want  my armor to match the color of my eyes or this one has spikes and that one doesn't, I will however grind a dungeon if it will give me better gear that will allow me to go pvp with a distinct advantage and make the "cry babies" cry .  image

Acutally this thread and your way of thinking would suggest that the real "cry babies" are the people that  get trashed in GW2 pvp, because they do not have the gear advantage that they are used to have in other MMOs, even though they are playing the game much more than people that are owning them...

Pretty sure with a name like "Guild Wars" any recognition received is going to be by a group effort such as the guild you're in and them becoming noteworthy.

Other than that, the point is to have fun. If you can only have fun by be singularly elevated above everyone else, then I can see your point.

Not at all, those with skills and gear always win against those with skills and lesser gear thus endgame has an actual point.  I rather think those that are cry babaies are the ones that  don't want to putt any effort into staying competitive.  Think about it.

I don't think GW2 is a bad game it can be quite fun but i also don't think they designed the game so that poeple would stay but rather to play  in bursts, with extended periods of it sitting on your shelf collecting dust in between those bursts.

Mostly my post was to show the juvenile i quoted that  name calling can turn around and bite you in the  behind.

Heh one thing I see posted often is that the point of GW2 is to have fun. The thing about having fun is that "fun" isn't the same for all. So what we have here is one group calling the other group "whiners" and "cry babies" becuase their idea of fun is different and that is well silly.

The truth is both  views can be correct it just depends on which side you are viewing it from and then there those like me that can see both sides.
