Some GW2 questions before I buy

SBE1SBE1 Member UncommonPosts: 340

Trying to find answers to a few questions about the game.  I hope you enlightened folks don't mind answering it.

1) My primary focus is PvP, particularly large-scale open world "zerg" PvP.  I was really excited about hearing the WvWvW thing ala DAOC style.  However, I then read about ques (long ques) to get into WvWvW.  So I'm wondering: how many people are allowed in WvWvW at a time?  Is it zergy (which for me is fun), or is it small man teams roaming around?

2) How are the seige battles?   Is it primarily focusing on doors or is there some additional strategy?  Are most forts well defended or do people just go from one objective to the next?  The worst example would be say SWTOR where objectives could be taken in Ilum by 1 person in about 10 seconds.  The best example would be classic DAOC defended relic keeps.

3) How is the lag in WvWvW?

4) Does anyone have a link to minimum computer specs?  Couldn't find it.

Thanks in advance.

have not played much since the early release so camnt answer about the ques right now. What iIdid though reminded me a lot of DAoC. I did not get any lag and must have been at least 75 - 100 players in some of the battles. I enjoyed it, just want to use it for my end game so I am doing PvE first

here is a quick run down on what to expect

    scroll down fro minimum specs

The following is mostly based on beta experience, although I've played some WvW post-beta and it hasn't changed much.

    1) It's both. You can do some content in small groups, but of course, larger numbers win in a direct fight. Big sieges are almost always "zergy". I think it was supposed to be 100 vs. 100 vs. 100 at some point, but they've talked about increasing the limit, so it may be more atm. Big battles are frequent. Ques are very long during peak hours, but that'll fix itself sooner or later. Right now, however, I'd say ques are the biggest downside of WvW.

    2) You can upgrade forts. Even without defending players, NPCs can handle small groups. When it comes to supply camps and other small places, a group of three players can take "basic" versions of them, if no enemy players are present. I've never attacked a fully-upgraded camp with maxed NPC guards, but it's probably quite hard an requires more than five players. A fully-upgraded fortress is most likely a nightmare to take. I've seen badly-organized zergs of 30 people get slaughtered by a couple of defenders with solid anti-infantry machinery. Taking a keep requires at least a battering ram, because otherwise you'll be beating that gate for half an hour. That's the bare minimum, though.

    3) No lag for me. No big FPS drops, either, if that's what you mean. I've got a HD 6870, i7 2600K and 8 gigs of RAM. You can switch high-res textures on other players off and that speeds the game up a lot during large-scale fights without lowering visual quality noticeably. I just keep them off all the time.

To be honest. You will probably like it in the long run. What i mean by that is if you try and jump in pvp right out the gate, you will be overwhelmed by higher leveled people. Not so much because of their level but more so the skills they have avaliable compared to you and armor differences. While the armor disparity drops the higher you get in lvl or armor grade if you take a decently equipped lvl 80 with his skills and traits unlocked, you will be overwhelmed. If pvp is your thing, try it. Then try rushing through the lvling process and go back. You will find a vast difference in wvwvw. The spvp tournements are very fun once you realize how much depth and strategy go in to the team combinations.

1 join a smaller server, queues are ok then
2 not as good as daoc or planetside, better than anything else in the past decade, don't worry its not some lake bloody wintergrasp type setup
    3 pretty good
4 I have mid range pc - fx4 black, 6870 works fine for me.

One thing as a warning. I don't see it having the longevity of rvr.

Fighting random nameless dudes every 2 weeks (well 24 hours at the moment), just isn't the same as fighting your "best enemies"

Quite honeslty I don't recall names in for example WoW PvP, I just went into a battleground and played. I understand it is possibly cool to make a name for yourself, but you can do that within your guild and among your friends. Until they change things if they do, just play and have the fun of bashing and stabbing.

I'd recommend playing PvE at least until you get to level 10-ish and unlock the weapon skills you'll be using. With no weapon swapping and a small number of weapon skills available, your ass will get kicked pretty hard. Besides, it only takes a couple of hours and will teach you how to play the game in a more friendly environment.

TBH, even though they advertised WvW as a viable leveling place from lvl 2 to 80, it's not as beginner-friendly as it should be right now. Personally, I'd to wait until lvl 20 or so before going there.

It is nothing like DAoC RvR what so ever... everyone saying that crap better come back and play it again.  DAoC still trumps in this area.  There is way more numbers in DAoC which is what makes it fun/strategic. There is no OP class, its all in how you play your toon in DAoC.  I can beat any class with any class none of this flavor of the month shit.

    1)  They did try to design for those who want to work in small group to have something to do. You can go take a supply depot. You can escort supplies. you can do hit and run on siege machine locations to defend a fort. But you can also certainly join a big group that is either defending or attacking. usually one forms especially now, early on since no body or few have spent the 100g to learn the skill to form a squad. Basically right now the battle fields tend to be chaotic and that lends itself to people clumping up and sticking together rather than breaking off into tactical teams. You will find what you are looking for WvW.

Each of the 4 maps can hold about 500 players total. So each side is limited to about 165 player on a map at a time. It does cause some harsh queing on heavy pop worlds. There are some worlds that have a lot lower queue times and that is what you want to find. And right now you can transfer around for free. And remember you can pick a server that suits you for WvW and eventually that is all it will effect. They said that they would have server guesting. So once that is turned on you will be able to do PvE anywhere you want with who ever. And you can join guilds cross server. The only thing your home server choice will effect will be who you WvW with. Why they don't have guesting already turned on I have no idea.

    2) Taking a fort takes a lot of people. It might take fewer if siege teams start getting more coordinated. But it is always going to take more than a few people to do it. But right now mostly a big group roles up. hopefully they group remembers to focus down the oil before hitting the door and hopefully someone remembered to pick up a flaming ram blueprint. and then hopefully 4 people have supplies so it can even be built. There are also usually lots of defenders on the walls. So no, a couple of people will not roll up and take an object. At least I haven't seen that happen. Also depending on what you are going after, there are also often walls that can be broken down. Terrain is also a big factor. lots of choke points. and as I mentioned above with the supply depots and caravans. you may also have to defend against hit and run groups.

    3) I haven't noticed any lag and I am on a gforce 275

    All die, so die well.

The sad thing i can remember names in pvp from when they use to be just server based. Had so much fun seeing a hated pali or annoying hunter night after night. To me that was more fun than getting paired up randomly. Just another face in the crowd instead of a mortal enemy from a rival guild.

open world pvp doesnt exist in guild wars 2. even a complete open world doesnt exist. citys and pvp areas and whatnot are all instanced.  u can only enter pvp W v W v W zones thru many many portal.

DAoC had a open world which allowed ganking ppl. that isnt possible in GW2 since u can not attack ppl outside of pvp instances.

As for capacity:  250 vs 250 vs 250 pr. map, aka 1000 vs 1000 vs 1000 on all maps.

You are confusing instances with zones. GW2 has huge zones seperated by portals that take about 10 seconds to move through depending on your system.

And that is why DAoC is a different style of game. GW2 was designed to be more casual and the folks who play it can decide when and where they want to "gank" or be "ganked".  WvWvW is the area you can make that choice.

it reminds me alot of early daoc rvr. I dont know if its better or worse yet as i havent played enough rvr. Of course i havent played daoc for years so that game could be totally different now.

i find it to be a great game and for 60 bucks..its well worth taking a shot at it.

    Thralia:

Daoc had an open workday that let you gank people ON ONE SINGLE SERVER - mordred

The vast majority of daoc servers had 3 segregated pve continents that were for one realm only and were gank free, with a 4th rvr continent for consensual pvp.

Daoc wasn't a ffa pvp game, except on mordred.

It also had a coop server which was just pve and you could pve on each others continents.

So gw2 isn't that different to daoc in that regard.

1- 166 per side per zone at a time.  That's 500 per zone and 2000 pvpers across WvW.  Eternal ofen has a queue.  The others don't except at prime time on my server, Tarnished Coast.  None of them have a queue right now, for example, but in a few hours there will be one.

2- The siege battle are effective, with many types of siege gear available.  They all do different things, of course.

2- Doors and walls on keeps and towers.  There are other objectives though, like bridge sentries and supply routes and camps.

2-Keeps and towers are well defended and can be upgraded, but a large group can take one down in about 5-10 minutes depending.  A solo person isn't likely taking any objectives except maybe a lone supply runner.

3-I never had lag in WvW until yesterday.  Now I have it every once in a while.  Some people complain about it ALL the time.  I've not experienced that issue.

    For the Coast!

    Amjoco:
Wow is a raid orientated game, with mini game pvp where you face people for 5 or 10 mins
Daoc & gw2 are persistent pvp games where you face off against players for an evenings play.

So in daoc you did get to "know thy enemy"
You sort if did in wow too, but only if they were regulars and before they started xserver instancing.

Cities are not instanced - SORRY - another case of someone not understanding the game. WvWvW is and so are dungeons but the rest of the world is similar in nature to WoW - here you have a gate to go through to switch areas (but not instanced since there are many people playing).

DaOC is dead - who cares.

I will say right now if you are only going to play for WvW just don't get the game until they fix it. You can not get in most of the time and the server balancing is just broken.

Now when you do have a balanced fight the WvW is great and the seige battles are some of the best PvP i have experienced.

No lag in PvP on a standard system with a 7yr video card.

WvW is pretty sweet. There are queues and they can be long. I think the limit is 500 in WvW zone at the moment. I know they plan to expand it over time and there are overflow state servers as well, so sometimes the queue is reasonable and sometimes it is just way too long. There is only so much they can do to immediately remedy that issue so a little patience is required on our part.

The wait is worth it. The combat is fast and furious and the actionable areas are nicely spaced to give room to roam but not so much that it feels like you have to walk for days to find the fight. Sieging is fun but it is still a misunderstood art at the moment. It will be refined by the players over time and Anet is watching to see what they need to adjust/add/remove to make it as smooth and epic feeling as possible. I feel WvW will become the crown jewel of GW2 but it isn't quite there yet.

The lag issue is present, especially on lower end machines, but it isn't a game killer for many players (realistically). If you expect 300 combatants raging away on your screen at once with no slow down at all you are going to be miffed. If you realize that even current technology has it's limits and systems like WvW are pushing those limits you'll be fine. My lap top (i5 2.9ghz/8 gigs ram/nvidia 555M) does fine. It isn't the most glorious thing ever but it's functional even in WvW. I play on medium setting with shadows on low.

In the end, if you (like myself) were a DAOC RvR fan, you will enjoy WvW. The rest of the game is pretty bad@ss in it's own right as well, so go for it and I think you'll be rewarded!
