How do you play GW2?

CastillleCastillle Member UncommonPosts: 2,679

So just random thing popped up in my head while reading the sandbox mentality thread and the counter thread to that o.O

How do you guys play it?  Personally, I treat it like Skyrim or Fallout.  I run around, talk to people, find out whats happening, and help whoever needs help.  Sometime I need some mats (like the god forsaken jute cloth) and I just go around trying to find them myself.  I dont really go to wikis since I consider that cheating and takes the fun out of the game.  Wikis/guides typically turn the games into an extended carrot hunt of Go to X and Do Y and yay get Carrot.  o.O  Sucky way to play tbh...

How about you guys?  Do you run around to all the shiny thingies in the map?  Do you talk to npcs n figure out the happenings around the place? Or maybe do you just hang out in sPVP or WvWvW?  We got owned a few days ago :(

Or do you stick with the game even if you dont really enjoy it in hopes of it getting better?  Or maybe you reached 35+ and are doing explore mode with guild mates?  I say guild mates because PUG = wipefest.

Most of my time was spent doing sPvP, with a little PvE/WwWwW on the side.

The sPvP is not bad, but unless all you do is tournies with a premade, most matches are pretty mindless. It almost feels like I saw more strategy in Hutball pug matches.

WvWvW is similar, except instead of having 8 people running standing on colored circles, you have zergs running around taking down doors.

I don't really play it much different than any other MMO ...

Do a quest ( Heart) maybe take part in another random quest as it pop's up ( DE), sometimes grind for drops (to tight to buy crafting mats ), farm ores/wood, bit of sPvP etc etc

I'm kinda at a loss as to what Mentality I " should " be playing it in .. I do what I want to to have fun and that changes day to day

I go to the shiny things on the map, but often get lost in events and stuff.

    In 2 very different ways.

When our guild/friends want to group up for dungeons, pvp, etc I log into teamspeak and we just go for it.

    -~-

When I play solo I now have some self-imposed rules that make the game more enjoyable for me:

    They are:

    1. I wont use M (map)
    2. I wont port between waypoints
    3. I wont have Map chat on in the general chat tab

I wont waste time explaining why, but I suggest you try it.

Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

I just do a little of everything. A little Heart Quest here, a Dynamic event there, a world boss killing near that, some crafting and money storage to top things off.

    The usual.

I just roam around mining and join in any DEs i see and have a blast joining random people in adventures! Truly the most fun I have had since vanilla wow leveling! This game is so my style! No quest journal is the best thing ever. Just let me explore an alive world and enjoy the slaying! ROAR!

Cannot really play it like Skyrim, Morrowind or Fallouts - since there are many markers that show me most things (even if some are not marked) and instead of roaming one big world it is like completing separatte maps/levels. It even shows how many things you need to find in other to have 100% map completion.

    Very diffrent vibe in GW2.

Currently waiting to receive some money in order to buy new PC and to give GW2 second chance.

i try to do something with logic but very soon i get lost in random events , i normally follow huge groups if i see one passing.
the way this game is designed is perfect for my game style on mmo , i love to not be stuck into any kind of obligation.

Same here.  A lot of times I log on with a general goal in mind and I usually get sidetracked helping out npc's.  I love running by an unmarked obscure cave  and going exploring.

I just meander towards the hearts but I get distracted by whatever event is running. If the events keep chaining off each other, I generally end up on the other side of the map sometimes lol.

Although some nights I have just wandered aimlessly and had just as much fun :)

For my main: I completed each zone I was in, kept up with the story and mined.  I moved on as soon as I completed a heart and almsot never skipped DEs.  I got to 80 very quick that way, which was my goal.

I log in on my main but quickly get bored.  I made a Necromancer alt but quit at level 12 as I don't really like the playstyle.  I've now made an engineer who I like a lot more than the necro.  I'm gathering everything I see and taking things a lot slower on the alts.

Right now I'm not driven to do anything but level alts.  I don't really care for WvWvW and my lone dungeon experience was a major turnoff.  Crafting doesn't seem worth it to me (yet).

    LOL

till now never thought of it that way - No Quest Journal!!!!

Also for everyone - once you reach some of the lvl70+ areas you see no hearts and usually you don't even notice there are no hearts - which means you are doing something right.

I reached lvl70 yesterday (well lvl78 at the end but still) and when i entered the lvl70-lvl75 zone i was there for a few hours before someone said in chat it had no hearts and i was like - wait, opened my map and realized he/she was right and i didn't need them

So yehh - i am having a blast as well..

Can't wait to have that star on me for completing the entire map - only at 60% now though...

    Just my 2 cents...

when i first read this thread topic i was thinking i was going to read about hands on keyboard and mouse

im still not decided if i should cast spells using the mouse or keys, at the moment im doing both.

its working ok , but i need to find a permanent way to improve my slashing

how are you pressing your bottons ? keys and mouse wise.

When I pick it up I plan to roam the WvW world as much as possible with a small tight knit band (if I can find one).No Zerg BS, just opportunistic (non ganker mentatlity) peeps who know what they're doing, I refuse to PVP any other way.

    Exactly this..

The only real goals i allways make is getting to the next part of my Personal story...

Every evening i plan to finish it with an hour of WvWvW, but i never make it as i get to involved in the PvE things i am doing.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Differently than expected I have to say. I was a huge fan of WAR, that was about the only MMO that I played with PvP focus, unfortunately it failed due to massive balancing issues. So I hoped Guild Wars 2 would be my PVP game. Thing is PvP, especially WvWvW is the main thing about the game I don't like.

Instead I love exploring and going for 100% map completion, it helped that the story got sort of better past level 30 to put some context to this massive beautiful world. So yeah, running around completing maps and doing whatever DE pops up is the way I play. Mostly solo, there is next to no encouragement to actually group for anything besides maybe accelerate hearquests, so I have to admit despite it being th emost crowded MMo I have played in recent time it is one of the lest encouraging for social interactions. Complete opposite to The Secret World, that I played before (and still will in the future), where, whenever you see another player doing the same quest that you are on, you group, it's alwats beneficiall there.

Yeah, this is a good way of playing, especially when you're in a zone for the first time. Worked well in Skyrim, and works well here.

I'll admit I find myself not caring about the people of Tyria. So I don't really dig hearts and dynamic events where you "help" some NPC, especially the escort quests have been a bore.

On the other hand, I really like exploring - even more so when I do it the way the above poster described. Especially not opening up a map to see a vista and just happening upon it while exploring, and then trying to work out a way to get to it is really good stuff!

The sole problem I have right now with how I'm playing the game is that somewhere down the road I decided map completion would be a pretty good goal for an exploration-based player like myself... And while for the most part that's true, map completion unfortunately dictates you have to complete the hearts! I wish it didn't - they're wearing me out a bit.

I wish we could do 100% world map completion without touching a single heart and get an achievement called The Heartless Explorer or something! :)

The beautiful thing about this game is I can actually play it as the mood strikes me.

Sometimes, especially on entering a new zone, I feel the epic hero thing, when I'm in full immersion mode, and I stride the landscap (literally WALK most of the time) enjoying the scenery and the music, just helping out whoever needs help along my merry way.  At these times I will often listen to NPC conversations and talk to NPCs (there are soooo many little treats waiting for you if you do that).

Sometimes I mild RP in Say (another epic win for the game is that there are so many people around during dynamic events that you can always catch a bit of RP - this is on an "unofficial" RP server).

Then at the other extreme, usually when I'm near completion on a map, I get it in my head to do things systematically- then it's all business, ticking the boxes, and scampering and teleporting all around for the most efficient "path".

I've just started getting into the PvP - sPvP is awesome jump-in fun.  WvWvW looks like it will be fun later as I flesh out my character a bit more (lvl 32 atm).

Currently doing explorable dungeons for awesome looking gear and trying to get full exotic's.  Leveled to 80 by crafting and exploring and doing dungeons and such.  Approached the game like i did skyrim, now its down to business pimping my character out :).

"Where Guild Wars 2 goes, so should I."

Basically, I complete the zones and just go with the flow of events and discoveries. When I hit a speedbump, I craft or travel to the next heart.

Often times I find myself making screenshots of the beautiful scenery or the mysterious architecture of some structures. (Timberline Falls... first time I saw that "island" in the middle of the big lake I was just pressing [screen] like crazy.)
