LOS ANGELES and SINGAPORE – August 30, 2012 – PointMMO, a new digital distribution platform focused on MMO games, was announced today. The platform provides publishers with the ability to self-publish and distribute their titles to a growing audience of dedicated MMO players. Unlike other platforms, PointMMO is completely focused on MMO games and the challenges MMO players have in finding new games, and getting into those games quickly. PointMMO will enter beta in the coming weeks and interested players are encouraged to sign-up at:www.pointmmo.com

“While there are other digital distribution platforms already operating, not one of them has a focus on MMO players,” said Kay Gruenwoldt, CEO of PointMMO. “Our system is designed to be the fastest and easiest way for MMO players to find, try, and play MMO games.”

The PointMMO team has been quietly building the platform and adding features to its roadmap to address the needs and wants of the MMO community. With beta coming in the next few weeks, the veil will be lifted soon and players will be able to start downloading and playing MMO games faster than ever.

“With our leading progressive download and streaming technologies, we get players into games without them even having to install the client, and in a fraction of the time a full download takes,” said Jens Bohnwagner, CTO of PointMMO. “For Free-to-Play publishers, the player benefits are clear and the innovative business model accommodates their needs much better than other digital distribution platforms.”

PointMMO Features

·         The fastest download of every MMO game featured on the platform

·         Registered members-only exclusives and promotions for new and classic MMO games

Eh... In the history of bad ideas, this one is right up there with the best of them.

MMO's are the games best at handling updates and distribution themselfs. This is like selling sand in Sahara...

    Lol.

Awesome!  I can sign up and play:

    World of Tanks!

    Age of Conan!

    Allods Online!

And I can join up and download them!

    Oh wai...

Yes, this is a pointless idea (PointlessMMO?) aside from the fact that yet another person has found a way to part suckers from their money.

Good on them I suppose... I just hope they don't leave a sour taste in anyones mouth when they realise they could have by-passed this 'service' entirely.

But if these guys get a bit of cash from Devs for advertising (which is what this really is) then good luck to them.

At first, I was like 'WTF'  as well, but I read their FAQ, and a cool thing their platform offers is the ability to start playing the game long before the download is complete.  Some games take as little as 15% of the download to be done before you can start playing.  The rest of the download streams in the background.  So, this isn't as 'pointless' as the other people above say it is.

How much of the game is needed to start playing is nothing to do with PointMMO.

Some games are already set up that way (Wizard 101 by KingIsle is one example) but some aren't.

It depends on the game client and what it will let you get away with.  I don't think PointMMO can do much about that?

In any case, I don't know about you, but when I want to download a new MMO I set it up to download while I am sleeping...
