[Column] Guild Wars 2: Through The Eyes of a Newbie

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It's hard to believe that anyone who is an MMO-phile hasn't been following Guild Wars 2 with wild abandon but...it's true! We've got a wet-behind-the-ears n00b on our hands whose written about his first steps in the game. Read on and then let us know what you think in the comments.

I haven't read previews, interviews, or participated in betas. I wanted to come to this game fresh, without preconception, and to be pleasantly surprised by its mechanics and nuisances. At this point, if the game turned out to be an adventure that takes place in the mind of a sexually curious mackerel, I'd simply have to say "fair enough."

Great read but the ncsoft comments, be aware ncsoft is just the publisher ArenaNet is the producers/developers.

I just wanted to read first impressions -- not fight the mental image of some MMORPG.com writer rubbing one out to "boobies on the internet." Grow up, guys.

Please give kudos to the artists at Arenanet. NCSoft is a publisher, not a game developer.

I'm confused. What's with the teeny hormonal sexual references every two paragraphs? Anyway...the editing leaves much to be desired as well. It's Norn, not Nord, and it's developed by ArenaNet, not NCsoft.

Apologies for not stating ArenaNet instead of NCSoft - see, really haven't been paying attention to its development...

"It's hard to believe that anyone who is an MMO-phile hasn't been following Guild Wars 2 with wild abandon"

    Very hard to believe.

Not sure why you are looking for a revolution at all.  Evolution yes, and for me, GW2 has done that.  Evolved the current themepark MMO into their game and it's awesome.  But revolution?  Not sure what you mean there and really not sure what you are looking for.  Sometimes, I think people have very unreasonable expectations of what innovation or revolution should be like.  We are limited by being human number one and we are limited by what current technology allows, number two.

Anyway, glad you enjoy the game, for me I find the game world more alive than most, even if there are a few NPCs just sitting/standing around.  That's the point where the game aspect exists.  Until we have sentient programming, get over it.  Hehehe, sorry to be rude there but to enjoy a GAME one must put away certain things that might detract from believing it's "real".

Stated in opening paragraph. I write about them, but I'm specifically not read or worked on anything to do with the game. Being an MMO writer you tend to saturate yourself and leave very little suprise, I wanted to have one game that would be exciting to play. Not so hard to believe.

Well, not playing it, but of course i've been reading a bit or two..

I just hope that the evolution continues. We're not in 2k4 anymore and we need technical changes to the genere.

    But also idea changes.

In this world some develop a winning recipe, zillion others copy.

    Crossing my fingers.

This read was pretty refreshing, looking at it from the eyes of the unknown. I guess the big takeaway is that the game is fun but not necessarily a revolution in the genre.

No lie- Not sure of its becoause its a new mmo- or a its been a lousy year for expansions and expectations of new games, but this game has me hooked  all my free available time!

it dosent feel like a grind fest-nor a rat race to finish level cap (for game to begin)- it just feels 'Right' as an mmo should feel! in this decade.

well done Anet-cant thank you enough!

"I hotly anticipated EverQuest 2, couldn't wait for Age of Conan, and wet my pants with excitement over The Old Republic: in short, I expected too much, knew too little, and ultimately filled the gaps with my own desires instead of what was on the developer's mind. The result? Those MMORPGs just couldn't ever live up to the hype, and I was sorely disappointed. So now is the time to tell you that for 5 years, I have purposely stayed blissfully unaware of NCSoft's plans for Guild Wars 2."

Those 3 games you list are very different from each other, what is your point?

  • shakermaker0shakermaker0 Member UncommonPosts: 194
My point? I was excited, read everything about them, got too into the prelaunch and was disapointed because it didn't live up to the hype I had built in my mind?

Article is a little too perverted.

"But alas, I immediately run into one problem. While the opening excites, and the first area is lush with colour and brilliant animation, it immediately doesn't feel like a revolution of the genre, but a refined update."

So you failed your mission to overhype the game in spite of avoiding all information on the game. You managed to avoid even finding out who the developer is, but still expected a revolution.

Maybe one day you'll learn how to form realistic expectations for things. It's really easy, actually. Assume everything the developers say is best case. In other words, don't make things up yourself.

    This^.

~ "but after 15 years we've only advanced past the point of tapping "A" to now dancing between "1, 2, 3, and 4.""

Ouch. More on the combat, would be interesting.

After many years of playing MMO's I've found out  prefer single player offline games rofl.

I've also become less tolerant of the occasional rude trololols who use the medium as a way to behave badly with no accountability.

Having said that, I'm going to try out GW2, a PvP based game doesn't force you to socialise per se to raid/instance.

This is the first free to play game I've got high expectations of , the fact that I'm not paying for a subcription should be less frustrating.

As for the boobies thing, I can't believe people bothered seizing on a bit of lighthearted albeit bad taste humour, it's a non-event, like Prince Harry nekkid, like his grandad having a bladder infection which ran as news fo 3-4 days!

As for the trololols who will call me emo, ...get a life.

So you read what was posted but you dont know what the writers point was? I thought it was quite clear what he was saying.

  • sbrite10sbrite10 Member Posts: 71

What do you mean whats his Point? His point is he listened to all the hype of all 3 of the MMO's and was sorely dissapointed so decidedly didnt pay any attention to any news about GW2 so he would have no expectations. What part didnt you understand?

Ok guys for all of you who say that ncsoft is just the publisher here a quote from arena on the topics about us:

ArenaNet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korea-based NCsoft Corporation.

That mean ncsoft is the parent of arenanet. So ncsoft control arenanet, they are not just the publisher.

So stop bashing the poor guy just because he say ncsoft instead of arenanet.

Guild wars 2, think about that for a sec. Don't you think it would have been a good idea to try out PvP, or WvW before writing all of that?

I already played but I thought it was pretty fun reading anyways. Since I been following it since it was named GW: Utopia it is fun to read what someone that stayed away from the hype thinks, he have a rather different perspective from me.

I'd point out that they origionally did not have the glowy balls above quest giver heads...But the test players were confused and didn't know what to do or how to get quests, so they added them.
