For months, I've been a fence sitter.
I've questioned anything and everything about GW2
I've looked for the good and the bad.
I've maintained a healthy skepticism and held my doubts about this game.
I've held off from purchasing this game until just this past week.

So why then............

Do I feel like a grade school kid on Christmas Eve with the anticipation of this launch???????

AHHHHH!!!!! HELP!!!!

If it's any consolation, you're not alone (my fiance has been sick hearing about my excitement everyday, I keep counting down the days for weeks, haha). You're in for a ride. :)

I know the feeling, I haven't been excited for an mmo in so long. I do feel like a kid on Christmas eve though.

I'm sorry friend, but you have taken the path into the dark side, may your soul be forever punished like the rest of us that have taken that fearful leap, my thoughts and prayers are with you on your final hours, godspeed, and goodluck.

Agreed, within a month or so you'll realize it really is just another MMO and the excitement will wear off.

    ... or sustain ;)

@GeezerGamer : The answer why is pretty simple, we've not been served a decently solid MMO since such a long, long time ...

yes but it was clear from the get go SWTOR was bad.. all the videos showed the terrible graphics and the betas proved it and showed how much of a WOW clone it was. Apples and oranges.

I should add that unfortunately many many many SW fans would see reason before release and those of us trying to help.. sorta got slaughtered on the forums.

I tried to explain to my girlfriend that it was like missing Christmas for 5 years in a row and then FINALLY being able to spend Christmas morning with your favorite people and having 5 years worth of presents to open all at once.

I was one of those massive Star Wars and Bioware fans that closed my eyes, stuck my fingers in my ear, and screamed "nah nah nah nah I'm not listening!'

Then SWTOR happened, then ME3 ending happened... consider me a broken fan boy.

If GW2 loses it's luster after 4-6 weeks like TOR did, I just might be done with the MMORPG genre.

    I'm with you!

I played GW1 a bit, and thought it was pretty good, but didn't get really into it. Then as info about GW2 started coming out, I figured I'd at least check it out and try to get into the beta. Months/Years passed, and when beta time came, I was on the fence. SO many MMO's have flopped and been a waste of $40-60, and have left a bad taste.

The more I played it though, the more I came to love it. Now it's at a point where I've never been this excited for a game release. The beta/stress tests have been getting better and the game runs like a champ. I'm this excited and I haven't even STARTED the PVE game yet. It's all because of sPVP and how many things they've done right with the combat and skill systems.

It is both familiar and innovative. GW2 will almost definitely be my main game for years to come.

The game is still largely untested past a certain point. So one cannot logically deny that as a possibility. Even so, I think I can still walk away satisfied with my purchase.

I have paid more for less.

And Besides....I've been a Rift fan since it came out.....

Yeah I have been a fence sitter myself as even though the fanboys say everything has been shown already I call B.S. and will wait a week or 2 until people get past level 40 to see what the game is like. I am trying to avoid the Tortage effect and the same mistakes I made with Warhammer thinking that endgame at level 1 was awesome when I was shown by halfway to cap it was pretty damn boring doing the same PVP maps and dynamic events.

If you have waited this long whats 1-2 more weeks? Enough people should be max level by then and you can get a good idea how things are.

    I'm pretty much the same.

The overly zealous GW2 fangurls put me off a lot, to the point where I was constantly defending every single other game because they ravaged it for not being GW2.

It actually put me off the game, I was sure I didn't want to play it with these insane idiots.

But now I've got a feeling that I need to buy it, I need to play it at launch, granted I get this way with every newly released MMO, I'm just hoping this time it's different and I can stick with it for more than a month!

  • MindTriggerMindTrigger Member Posts: 2,596

Yeah, I mean logically I know it's another themepark, but even if you just spend time walking around and paying attention to the details, it's clear this game has something special.  ArenaNet has put everything any company is going to be able to ever do to deliver the best, most modern MMO game to date and it shows from top to bottom.  This was no manufactured title.  It's a labor of love, and from what I can tell they have nothing but plans to shower more love on it.

I was stoked to see on their website yesterday that they are HIRING.  Not laying people off, not even waiting to see how the game is going to sell, but HIRING NOW.  Very cool indeed.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

That had been the exact sentiment I had held all this time.

What had changed my mind was that recently there was a thread about Cash Shop related buffs functioning in WvW. At that point, they'd been confirmed to work thus indicating that GW2 would in fact be P2W. It was confirmed in my book at that point that this was absolutely the game that would earn the biggest disappointment of 2012.

Someone then pointed out an announcement by ANET that they would fix it. "Yeah Right!" I thought. It's not a "bug" that's more like a "Cash Cow". "We'll see, I said to myself. I had my doubts.

But then, after the next Stress Test, It' had been confirmed that the buffs no longer applied in any PVP setting.

In my mind, this was strong evidence that ANET was going to stay true to their word and do the right thing for the customer. All I want to see is a philosophy that says, Happy customers are paying customers. It's not hard and it does in fact make profits. So many companies just don't get it.

So When i saw evidence of this, I gave myself the green light. I bought it that week.

I got in a Stress Test. When we play our games, we don't play because Combat has this mechanic, or Character Classes have that mechanic and we don't play MMOs because they use certain coefficients in calculating how much your ability hits for. Yada Yada.

WE play because of how we feel when we play. GW2 had it.

That's all there is to it.

I'm with you OP! I wasn't even thinking about this game two weeks ago and now all of the sudden I'm damn hyped. XD Especially since my brother was nice enough to let me try the game out. It felt different, I wasn't used to it at first but after an hour or two everything started to make sense and I loved every moment of it!

And right now, the anticipation! Can time go any slower? *shrugs* Anyway, we're ALMOST THERE! *cheers*
