    F2P - nope

    B2P - yup

P2W - not at the moment, may change at a later patch, but hopefully not.

You can still buy gems with ingame currency anyway, so even if the cash shop becomes "necessary" ( I actually trust ANet's sensibility on this matter) you can still get what you need without cashing in.

Actually the thing that matters more then price is Quallity

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The video is already presented anywhere else here in the forum, I fogot where :P

Anyway, again pretty interesting and another proof that companies more and more are willing actually to take that '' free path '' for better incomes. When it comes to P2W, it depens on the game as he said, however F2P games are the ones which are usually P2W because they have a kinda of a reason they usually show for their fans when getting shouts: We give you the chance to play for free and experience our game without spending a dime. It is your choice if you want to pay or not however, that won´t affect your journey in our game. The thing is that this reason is actually '' real ''. In the most games, you can do all the PVE content without spending a dime however when getting to the end-game where the PvP part begin, it is no use in the most cases, you have to play 5x to get these extra stuff through raids, or you won´t get them att all without paying.

For me, F2P has always been a really good choice and I fully mean it. If the game has great quality, I will gladly play it, even if it is p2w. I basiaclly play it for the '' journey '' to the lvl cap. In many cases, this journey turn out to be pretty great, especially if played with friends. nd when I reach the lvl cap and have nothing to do but raids to be the best, I leave the game with good memories that I have spent during my interesting journey. Pretty simple.

Good quality is what matters ..

Said it before, I'll say it again...I think as more developers realize how much money a f2p game can make, even when it's not p2w, we'll see more mainstreeam western developers putting out more free games. In addition, I suspect that many current subscription based games are currently planning the switch to f2p. Not as a sign that their game is failing.

I think the advantage from a developer standpoint to a box price+sub model is they get the money up front in a larger chunk. It's a good way to build early capiral. Once they have a money ball to kick around, they can switch over to f2p, which may makle more money, but probably takes some time to build up speed. in the f2p model (especially not p2w f2p games), players only spend when they determine it's a game they like and care about. Most people will take a month or two at least to decide that, and thus money initially comes in to a f2p game slower.

I firmly believe ToR, Rift, Tera, and TSW will be f2p within 2 years; and I believe they will be better and more succcessful games for it.

    EDIT: FIXED IT!

I kinda want to berate you for taking the time to post that...on the other hand, people that abuse spelling and grammar as horribly as some posters on third forum upset me, so I can understand. I have a tendency of making stupid mistakes in typing sometimes. I do actually know the difference.

Do you people actually listen to what he is saying?

The conversion of their P2P MMOs to a F2P model did make Turbine more money.
The differnce is: Turbine gave their client away for free.
    Same goes to Anarchy online.

At the Pay to Win comment:
Enigmius: you have to know that by your definition and the mechanics of Guild Wars 2 Atlantica Online is not a Pay to Win game.

Not quite accurate. AO, DDO, and LoTRO ARE free to download now...but they had box prices at release. Ditto by the way for City of Heroes, Champions, Age of Conan, Vanguard (soon to go F2p) , Aion....I can keep going. They got themselves some box sales up from.

As to the p2w commnet...not sure I understand the relavance. Are you asserting Atlantica IS p2w? I don't quite remember what was in their cash shop.

    I'll make it simple.

If GW2 was P2P, then there would only be a box, subscription, and maybe an expansion cost.

If GW2 was P2W, then there would be a Cash Shop.

If GW2 was B2P, then there would only be a initial purchase and/or expansion cost.

If GW2 was F2P, then there would be no cost to the player.

See the underlined, if I am not missing something. :)

Atlantica does have some box gambling and selling things for more luck in crafting. You may still do it in game with enough... luck. You can still buy the items via players market.
That game does however support casino gaming at high pricing. 10$ a box and such.

B2P will have to be worth the cost box over F2P in terms of quality - GW2 clearly is high quality enough to warrant a box sale.

No real large budget game has been released in the west as f2p from day one. And Turbine games have content restrictions.

    Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders

AO went free download after about 7-8 years of being a P2P game.LOTRO went years also.CoH as well.Only games that went F2P on your list within a year of release is Champions. All the ppl who love the B2P model and the F2P model are hurtin the genre themselves and will pay for it in future along with rest of us.ATM sure it's only cosmetic items but soon enough they will start slipping in the needed items and your gonna be forced to pay one way or another and you can be sure it will be more than the 14.99 a month you would have paid.

In that case a good quality game that is able to charge a sub will do so.

As long as the market is free, consumers will decide what is worth and what is not.

I like discussing about games. But please avoid terms like "it will", "it is going to" or "the devs have said".

Tell me, do you have a tinfoil hat that would match my shoes?

So far, we've been seeing a push towards f2p/b2p models that AREN'T P2W. League of Legends . Champions. STO. AoC. DDO. LOTRO.

We as players control the market. If a dev makes games that DO start forcing us to pay for needed items, we can simply stop playing and bringing them money.

Also keep in mind the games that went f2p after a long time did so because that was around when the stigma of f2p=p2w started fading. We're seeing it happen faster and faster with recent games, hence why I expect to see TSW and Rift go that way soon.
