Heh Lord Bachus is a game locust.  Time and time again we, who have been on MMORPG for a while, have seen him move from game to game to game.  Never lasting for more than a month or so.  And every time he comes onto the forums here to tell us just why he left the next game.

Just one of those players that will never be happy.

If it wasn't for the story and the genre, I wouldn't be considering this game at all.  But there is something to be said that a game with crappy combat can garner interest.  In most MMO's, if the combat isn't fun, that's it.  It's hosed.

I also agree regarding the story.  The story, the genre, the atmosphere, and the quest deliver are EASILY the winners in this game.

    ^ I agree.

The reason I will be quitting after my first month (maybe paying 1 month more) is because I ran out of content already and have found 4 builds that i enjoy. I love the storyline, atmosphere helps it. But PVP is noexistant because in not a "challenge," its zerglike, or a domination...kind of like the Pyro in TF2 without his glasscannon feel :P The combat doesn't inspire me, but I can live with it, like I lived with the Silent Hill 2 combat, because I LOVED the story. Also, the combat is really quite simple depending what games you have played in the past.  Im not a fan of many of the quests, but the investigation quests make up for them. I have no desire to start a 2nd character though, because the story is more cinamatic in feel to me than some games. This is not a bad thing, just my opinion.

Ok fine, I'll totally bite the bait...

So if GW2 is ABLE to take those ideas and do them right.. why didn't they?  :)

For the record... I think Funcom did these events RIGHT 10 years ago with Alien Attacks in AO, I've been waiting for years for games to pickup from that innovation and improve on it.  I didn't really like what WAR did at all.  I thought Rift did a pretty awesome job on it - the best to date IMO - but the rest of Rift was a bit too generic for my taste.  Better storyline and world would have gone a long way.

GW2 takes the events to the extreme and some of the stuff in it I really like.  The combat is where it falls apart for me with GW2 - i don't like that every event is a massive zerg and that there is no consequence either for dying or for doing awesomely well.  All rewards get killed, everyone gets the same reward regardless of contribution, neither grouping nor cooperation are encouraged or rewarded.  Plus, the really generic and bland world in GW2 turns me off as much as Rift did.

Now if we had TSW's world with GW2's animations and Rift's dynamic events and TSW's encounter difficulty and death penalty, we'd have ourselves a pretty badass game.  ( i could go on about other components too..)

One day.. one day SOMEONE will get ALL of it right and not just bits and pieces.  Until then.. i'll have to play TSW for the immersion and for challenge and GW2 for the dynamic content and graphics.

Ive actualyl come to dislike the whole DE gimmick, specifically in war rift and now GW2 is approaching it.  Alien invasion was something different than the modern incarnation, it was random and a big deal, i remember the race to get to where the invasion was happening hoping we wouldnt miss it or its loot...or when they did the invasion on rome or a major town how many players died and how epic it was.

Now DE is simply the lazy mans quest, yeah in rift they made them look awesome, and in GW2 they seem to make them look exciting...but yeah in the end i could stand there and spam my weakest skill while watching tv and it would have the same effect as if it went at it hardcore.

In the end the DE aspect of the game always gets boring and somewhat tedious, even when rift did those epic invasions where 500 rifts spawn and a massive boss...it was all just cool looking it played with very boring mechanics, which is exactly what i saw in GW2...and to use that as a main selling point speaks volumes to me.

I dont want DE in TSW if i want zerg mechanics ill hop in fusang and follow the pack, rather than splitting off in a small group which i love...avoiding the zeg and ninja tactics...so much more fun.

GW2 is going to be nothing more than a good battleground queue game, which works for many, and ill probably give it a shot down the road..the pve, the world, the lore and the setting is all very weak and that was before i started playing this game.

I've not heard of too many game-breaking bugs.  The vast majority of players - as you can read here and on pretty much ANY forums - are complimenting the game on its smooth launch and minimal issues.  It's definitely likely that SOME people have run into numerous bugs, for the vast majority of players this is not true.

Some quests are broken, this isn't a major issue but can be really annoying when they are multi-part quests where you spend a lot of time working on them only to get middle finger near end.

This is true.  Some quests are buggy.  For me, approximately 0.5% of quests was bugged.  To help others understand your experience, can you tell us how many total quests you did and how many total quests were bugged?

The skill system is only good for idiots IMO.  I'm sorry, but I've played around with it and it just isn't good.  Most skill combos don't work

Well...generally people that aren't idiots are able to find skill combos that DO work.  That's one of the advantages of being a non-idiot.

There are and always will be a select few builds that are just better than everything else.

Can you give 2 or 3 examples of the builds that you personally have encountered that fit this description?  I'm yet to see or hear of any such builds, but it seems like you have more experience.  Specifically, I'm looking for a good build for Hell Raised, but if you are talking about endgame builds, feel free to post those too.

Any game that allows all players to be all classes within a single character is going to be fail.

Fail in what regard?  EVE is one of the most successful MMOs in history - in all regards - and allows a player to be all classes on a single-character.  What games are you referring to that did this and failed?  I've played a whole lot of MMOs and have seen a ton of failed games that had character classes yet still failed.

The simple fact that you have to level up a character and you're limited to that class makes a big difference in games like wow.  Someone might level a Warlock for example, they might not be best dps in the game but they will continue to play it just because they invested all that time leveling.  In TSW, people will just respec to whatever the Flavor of the Month is over and over.

You can't just respec.  After you finish leveling your TSW equivalent of "warlock", you need to level your TSW equivalent of "Paladin" in order to be able to play that build - you CANNOT simply respec your "warlock" skills to become "paladin" skills, you need to level those separately.  This isn't really any different from leveling a Warlock in a class-based game getting them all geared out and then when you're done, leveling a Paladin, getting them geared out, etc.  The main difference is that you don't need to log out and switch characters.

Also, there is no reason to continue playing.  No end goal.  No progression to work towards.

What kind of progression do you have in other MMOs?  It's pretty much the same thing.. you get through the entire story, you max out your characters level, then you work on improving your gear, then you work on defeating the hardest possible content, then you make an alt and work on doing it all as a different role.  TSW has all of this.  Not much in terms of raids atm, but those are coming.

Quests are all pretty standard kill X, loot X, click X.

Yep, kill X, loot X, click X, escort X, follow X, find X, discover X, learn latin,  decipher morse code, learn about classical music, do internet research, visit a library, pretty standard... if you've played TSW before.  Can you provide an example of another game that has quests similar to TSW investigation quests? Or TSW sabotage quests - because honestly, i love these and if these are "Standard" in the other games you play, i'd like to play those same games, so let me know.

Combat is pretty boring.  Nuke nuke nuke till stuff dies.  Very few things to react to.  I never find myself trying to interrupt skills or use buffs to avoid damage.  Just no real reason to.

You must be using one of those over-powered builds you mentioned.  Because, on pretty much every single boss fight in the game, i - and anyone else of any of the hundreds of players i've teamed with - died pretty quickly if they didn't react to things in combat.  Anyone that just stands there nuking survives maybe 1 out of 5 or 6 encounters in any of the dungeons after Polaris.  (Although even in Polaris, i'd love to know how you survived the last boss without reacting to anything.)  Can you post a video of yourself - or pretty much anyone else that you can find on youtube - that is fighting a TSW boss and no one in the group is moving?  Because honestly, i call total bullshit on this - it sounds like you either didn't play the game at all or didn't fight anything of any difficulty, because pretty much every significant encounter in TSW requires reaction and coordination.  That is one of the highlights of its combat.

dSee above.  It sound to me like you either didn't play the game at all, or didn't pay attention.   There are tons of things that are wrong with TSW and that can be discovered through playing.  The stuff you've posted is so generic and not applicable to TSW that it comes across as though you just wanted bash the game for no real reason.

I've already gotten to the point, after two weeks, where I am considering not subbing after the first month.  It's unfortunate too, because up until Transylvania I loved the game.  Now that I am near end game I am sort of disappointed to realize that the game offers nothing new for me.  It's bascially a gear grind for purples that involves doing dungeons over and over again.  The same thing I have done since 2001.  I had some time off from work the past two weeks due to holidays/vacation etc, so I guess I just blew through the content I enjoy too fast.

The story is fantastic, I love 95% of the missions.  Hell I am even an odd one that actually likes the combat and isn't bothered by the animations.  However...once you do the missions, the story--I am having trouble finding any motivation to go do them again.  The crafting is pretty worthless, pvp just isn't cutting it for me.  So I guess grind for gear?  No thanks.  I guess these types of games just aren't for me anymore.  I miss games where it would take months for me to even see the end..or better yet, not have end.  I should know better by now, but the story and atmoshphere of this game just drew me in.

I am not giving up on this game yet.  I was planning to at least play until late August (you know when).  Not sure if I will make it though.  I don't blame the developers for making the game, it's my fault for thinking I would enjoy gear grinding again.

SW:TOR kept Lord.Bachus' attention for FOUR WEEKS but TSW only kept Lord.Bachus' attention for TWO WEEKS.

Those of us who're still playing should feel ashamed for liking a game thats worse (in Lord.Bachus' opinion) than SW:TOR?

Is that what the message of this OP's word is?

Nice, but I politely disagree with you... Lord.Bachus.

i bought the game for the free month, like I always do. I joined a Cabal (guild) and i am having fun PvE wise. Havent done any instanced dungeons because its very annoying to spam in general chat and nobody cares or answer.... so i solo all the time and still have fun. I really dont like the combat but i keep going for the Lore and the setting which are very nice. However, I will leave the game behind when my free month is up. Dont have any plans on paying subscriptions.

The PvP isn't up to scratch for me.

I'm happy with the questing in the game, it is without a doubt among the best i've seen.

But PvP is what keeps me on long term with MMO's and the few they are offering at the moment are pretty much a joke. El dorado is the only exception as that one is extremely fun to play, but sadly it isn't enough to keep me going for now.

i left because the combat sucks , and bad combat in a mmo is like a bad plot in a movie, most of what you do in a MMO is combat , however i don't think the secret world is a horrible game just like the OP i thought the questing was very well done and engrossing , but if the combat sucks i am gone. The reason this game draws so many comparisons is that GW2 combat is similar and GW2 combat is  night and day better. If people like it hey great its not a horrible game but no chance i will give another shot i stuck through funcom's last debacle , not to mention after GW2 i am done forever with disguised grinding lame quests voiced or not......

There is so much mis-information, half truth and lies in this thread that I seriously hope people are at least a little bit ashamed of themselves. Of course they aren't, since this is the internet and their actions have no repercussions.

It's fine if the game lost your interest. This is the way with MMORPG's now. 2-6 weeks seems like a good run for many of you with ADHD like gaming habits. Please don't use this thread to share your opinion about how you once played an hour of a beta weekend and it was bad so you quit.

To everyone who doesn't enjoy it, good luck, have fun, and you can be certain I will not bash your new game of choice.

[mod edit]. That was the worst post I've seen yet about TSW. There was maybe one valid complaint in there about buggy quests, but that is easily fixed by petitioning a GM. They know about the bugged quests and will advance them for you.

Im still enjoying my stay though.

Two button combat?  Sounds like you made one horrible build bro...no wonder you didnt like the combat.  What did you do with  the other 5 slots...leave blank?

Didnt they just announce about raids and new content? For someone who has to state they are not a stalker regarding a game you sure missed some major info while not stalking...

I dont plan on quitting, but the amount of bugs I have started to come across in the Savage Coast and Blue Mountain is really starting to become annoying. Group chat still hasn't been fixed yet, I have come across about 6 sabotage missions and 2 investigative missions that I haven't been able to complete due to bugs like objects and enemies not spawning or objects that you are supposed to use not doing anything when clicked on. It seems like I am not alone as well, many people in chat are having the same problems with the same quests. It seems like the Grim dimension has a lot of bugs right now, not sure about other dimensions but right now any people in chat are coming across the same problems.

I do plan on playing till GW2 comes out, and making the most of my first month but as of right now the game is starting to become frustrating.

We all know... and its going to get worse up untill GW2 is launched.

I love how one GW2 fan makes a quit thread then all of a sudden everyone else randomly decided to quit TSW two weeks in. Yeah the game was so horrible they had to leave but they all played it in beta and still paid for it. image...i honestly doubt most made it past the free betas.

    It all seems overly desperate.

Also, i guess so many people left that they had to add another server to the game...

Edit: for some reason the offhand doesn't display.

This argument doesn't make sense to me.

You can't switch weapons in combat as an Elementalist, so you're stuck with the 20 + 4.  All of these are on cooldowns and the attunements themselves are on cooldown.  You could get more summoned weapons but seriously.. you're going to waste all of your Ability slots on weapons summons?  Most of them are kinda lame and they have 15 charges each (25 if you spec heavily into Fire trait line and waste a slot on it).  Once you drop your summoned weapon you're done with it, no switching.

The amount of abilities that you list are what are "possible" when you switch out weapons out of combat.

There are 525 of those in TSW if you're going to count out of combat abilities too.

Elementalists (and engineers to an extent) are an extreme case in GW2.  Most people are limited to their 5 weapon attacks and 4 abilities.  While most can switch weapons and get 10 abilities it's still 10 + 4 and most of those have cooldowns that will only let you use them once a fight.

I find GW2 MORE limiting because of the cooldowns especially as an Elementalist (which was my main at 25 in BWE).  Also to get all of those attuned abilities you have to be a wet paper bag and unable to take more than 2-3 hits.

TSW and GW2 can co-exist just fine I own both of them... but arguging that GW2 has tons more abiltiies doesn't hold water.  Once you unlock all of your weapon skills you're done except for grinding out Skill points for abiltiies (which were pretty lack luster and kind of lame in my opinion for Elementalist too).

While the story is certainly among the best ever seen in a Questing/story based MMO, most of the non main quests are just some nicely wrapped packages that contain the same we know from other games. On top of that, i spend 80% of the game in combat and this is exactly the not so fun part of the game, those 7 buttons just dont allow for enough diversity.  Its not fun, despite the fact that combat actually is harder then in other MMO´s its still not fun, espescially solo combat, because you keep repeating the same skills over and over, and the mobs are very static, same type mob means exactly the same fight over and over.

So while the mainquests are just awesome, its not enough to keep me happy and playing the game.

I have played less and less during the last week and am wondering if this is just me or that there are also others having this same experience?

(Even SWTOR did get a hold of me for 4 weeks, in which i got to max level.)

While I normally agree with most things you post Bachus, this is one where I think you crossed the proverbial line.  TSW is doing great and is grwoing subscriptions based on word of mouth just as the designers intended all along.  Again as others have stated here how can you not be a fan of limited button hotbar when GW2 is going for the same exact design.  it appears you discount the power the passive abilities have in your overall deck design.  An example of the power of this system is a few days ago on the forums there were 2 posts the same day explaining Melee was OP and the other Ranged was OP.   Combat is deep and the mobs get more complex especially once you get into Egypt and Transylvania.   And I assure you that there no way you can solo level effeciabtly (if at all) once you get into Blue Mountain with a subpar build.

Myself I am growing more apprehensive about the future of GW2 then I am of TSW, as once the incentive to play in a B2P system?  I will still pick it up but I am no longer the gushing fanboi that I was because Ive grown to see its many faults and TBH I no longer care if I play it or not even though I already bought it.  GW2 doesnt have the appeal to me that a truely open class system has always given me and my biggest complaint of GW2 is its strict rigid class system.  I for one believe GW2 would be a better game if they followed the GW1 skill model.

Thanks Zylaxx for stating so well how I feel as well.  I really did love GW2 the first couple of weekends but the more I think about it and when the 3rd weekend rolled around I just lost a lot of the love for it.

I think it was because after 25 levels of roaming through every zone I started to see how alike every event was.. it just didn't feel like I was hoping it would feel.  Then I got to think about the weapons that I had unlocked and that there was nothing left there... and my Skill point abilities were now locked to tiers making me purchase a few I knew I'd never want to use.

It made me start thinking what I was going to play the game for.. the Trait lines?  The twitch combat was becoming tiresome too.

I'll still play GW2 for fun once in a while but I don't think it'll ever suck me in like TSW did.  If TSW ever becomes a boring chore then I'll move on from it too but fortunately I don't see it in the near future.

Not that i am a particularly big fan of GW2 or care exactly how many abilities it has.. but it's definitely more than TSW's 7 (i think it's 9 or 10 at a time before kit and weapon switches).

Personally however, i found the UI to be absolutely fucking awful in GW2 for executing those abilities.  I mean, i raid weekly in EQ2 and commonly use 20-40 abilities in combat depending on the character i'm playing.. but i can arrange them on my hotbar and i can switching to a second or third hotbar in a standard and convenient way that has been used by many MMOs.  If GW2 just allowed me to put all those 20-40 abilities on separate hotbars and switch between them at will, I'd probably enjoy those abilities a lot more.  As it stands, i spend more in-combat time figuring out how to switch from my weapon 1 ability to my weapon 2 ability while switching out of my Kit 1 abiliyt to my Kit  3 ability and then switch both of htose back quickly to use the original abilities again.. ARGGHHH...honestly, i just give up on it and play with 9 or 10 default abilities i'm given.  That's just personal preference though...and hopefully they'll improve that UI before launch, it IS beta after all.  It still doesn't solve the problem that nothing you do in combat matters since the event will still be zerged and you'll still get the same thing if you were dead as those that actually killed the event... but anyhow.. separate issue.
