Star Wars: The Old Republic: The New Free* Trial

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Star Wars: The Old Republic is now free for everyone...sort of! In this week's SWTOR column, we examine the new Free* Trial and weigh in with our own thoughts. Should you bother with the Free* Trial? Read on to find out!

The new Free Trial is fairly straightforward at face value. Gamers can open up a new Star Wars: The Old Republic account and level up in the game, for free, up to level 15 without a time limit. If you’re familiar with Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning’s “Forever Free” trial, this one is pretty similar.

I'm holding out for either a space expansion or full F2P; whichever comes first  =P

    -Space Expansion

-Move Combat away from TabTarget Button Mashing

-Add in a REAL Crafting System

    -Space Expansion

    -Remove all the instancing

    -Space Expansion

-Revamp the equipment system so that it isn't cut & paste WoW

    -Space Expansion

    -Space Expansion

    -Space Expansion

    -Space Expansion

    -Space Expansion

Did I mention it's not STAR WARS without properly done Space?

As a Red Zoner, I stopped caring about this MMO when they gave me the Official finger. Further to their stupendous short sightedness, I presume that the free trial for "everyone" will still exclude the Red Zones.

It just amazes me that "the customer that paid" is nowhere in anything you read about SWTOR.

WoW offers 20 levels for free.  Is that a desperate cry for help too?

Well I only bought the game, I canceled my subscription in January.  Guess I'll wait for an offer that lets me come back and try out the changes and see if my legacy name was lost on the xfer they allowed without being subbed.

The free trial is a smart move, as were the server merges.  Don't worry about the trolls BW.

Wow offered it 8 years later when they lost 2 mil subs to competition. That being said i support free trials. I think every game should do it and it shouldn't be shunned as being "fail". Even better if all mmos went freemium in style of Aion/L2 model.

Free to play trials were not common when WoW was released.

I seem to recall playing a WoW trial in 2008.

They have a 7-day trial this week for old players. I installed logged in and then didn't feel like playing.

Did you ever subscribe?  Because I didn't and I can't play right now.  The article here and at the official site say only former SUBSCRIBERS can try the changes.

No, you expect that for a game to do a few years after release, because it's getting old, not 6 months in. It's a sign of failure.

My mistake.  I played a WoW trial in 2005.  I had just got guild wars 1 and was getting bored and then tried the WoW trial.

Ok so you can only return if you subbed a month after release. That is kind of stupid. People who bought the game and didnt sub after may actually want to try it again to see if its worth giving another try. C'MON BIOWARE.

I would have subbed at the time if they had a group finder and the experience was decent.  Now that they have it, I'd be a prime candidate to possibly sub.  But not without trying it on my level capped player.

They've washed their hands of any player that bought the game but never subbed.  That's a fairly sizable group to ignore now that they've finally added content and features that many wanted in order to sub.  I wasn't going to sit in teh fleet and hope to find a group in the chat channels.  And I wasn't going to subscribe to a game just to level alts.

doubt it'll generate many new players anyway. Main problem remains: it's a shitty generic game with crappy graphics, boring gameplay and tedious grinding.

Just canceled the game don't waste your time, not even sure why I did.

The story mode was fun but gets old quick especially in repeating flashppoints (HIT SPACEBAR FOR GOD'S SAKE).

Crafting is for the most part pointless.

PVP is stricktly 8v8 4 maps thet get very old really fast.

PVP servers have no point in this game everything is about arena pvp.

If you like scripted set role arena pvp it's not bad I guess.

Flashpoints where ok, but good luck  finding a group with a none cross-server group finder.

Sadly as bad as Star Wars Galaxies was it still blows this game away.

It's just another failed WoW clone.

    Please stop making WoW clones!
