Help me understand why people play TSW

maskmurdamaskmurda Member UncommonPosts: 80

In all honestly, I can't see how people play this game. I want(no sarcasm at all) someone to enlighten me on how they can play this. Funcom+EA turns me away as it is, but I played the beta and the game was so bland and unimpressive I can't grasp at why some people are gravitating to it. I wasn't struck by it's visuals, clunky movement and character animations or quest system. People are saying that the skill system is innovative, I see no inovation in the Trinity, only a new perspective. I dont mean to bash anyone who plays it, it's your cup of tea then by all means share with me something you find good in the game that I can check out, but for me a game with this level of quality shouldn't be released in 2012. I expect something like this from 5 years ago.  But I seeing how well EA loves their consumer base I can't see this game ending will in the next few months.  I'm really trying to see the diamond in the rough because I notice alot of people are getting into it, but then again there is that "new car smell" effect things can have.

It's not a bash thread nor I don't expect to bash or be bashed, I just want a real and honest understanding at how some people can use the word "impressive" with this kind of game.

I don't understand how anyone plays entirely instanced games and pretend they're MMOs.

    Much less Funcom WoW clones.

Well, it's "Impressive" for me mainly because of the Story in this game, and it is amazing. Most of us are bored of the predictable fantasy orc/elf crap and want something new. If you're playing MMO's just to grind your way to the top for bragging rights, well then that's your cup of tea. But, most TSW players that I know of including myself, loves a good story within the game and Ragnar and his team of writers at Funcom has done an amazing job with this game. Gameplay wise, sure there are the conventional MMO mechanics, but what sets this game apart from the rest for me is the way things are carried out. It's a game meant to be played at a much slower pace.

Another thing I find different is the Ability Wheel. 7 Actives and Passives from a pool of 500+ to pick from and find the perfect synergy for, is unique and challenging in it's own way. Beats the usual hack & slash skills from other MMOs no?

Nobody can explain why other people play a particular game. However, I can post my reason that I play.

I like doing all the quests. That's it. Just do quests and enjoy something with a different atmosphere.  I'm not rushing because the game doesn't offer anything else for me. I knew this before I bought it. But, the quests in CB were interesting so I wanted to do them all.

I commend Funcom for always trying a new twist on their games. I'm more than happy to support such efforts. Will it have millions of players? Nope. But, again, I already knew this. So did many others. And we were ok with this reality.

It's been a long, long time since I've had to keep pen and paper next to me while I played an MMO.

Wierd ability combos are becoming an itch that I might have to scratch. >.>

Why do you care? I think the game is fun so I play it. I like the story, the ability wheel, and the setting. Tell me some games you play and I'll ask you why you play them. [mod edit]

Omg come on seriously? We play it because it is the newest thing out there atm and we are bored to death with every aspect of every thing.

But seriously there are times I hate TSW and times I love it. The game definately has a challege factor, but on the other side of the coin the game mechanic and core design are flawed beyond belief.

    1) The game launched WAY too early, and NO I refuse to entertain those people that claim every game releases with bugs give them time they will get it fixed. We are 20 years into this industry, there are no longer any excuse why any game should EVER release in the state TSW is in now. IF they can fix the game " IN TIME " then they should fix the game on thier time, not on my time. Many games have released in recent years with clean nearly flawless clients, the days of  " ALL games release buggy " are done and over and yes players are starting to prove that to developers, take SWTOR as an example, and sadly TSW will be another example simply because they do not have time to " fix " the game eventually.  August 25th will be here before you know it and then the nomads will be moving on to a new game.

    2) Mini bosses easier than yard trash surrounding them, should never be the case, but in TSW many of the " elites " and random minibosses, are way easier to kill than any of the yard trash mobs around them.

3)Gah drawing a blank on what its called atm, clipping? When the terrain is not put together right in some places? Anyway tons of that in TSW, maybe not so much walking down the main roads, but off the roads there is a lot of it.

4)One of my big issues as it has been going on since the industry began and every developer should know to address it before release... audio or video memory leak.. basically when sound or audio files do not unload from memory cache when you move into a new area, eventually bogging down your game and system.

5)The fact they release a game with a place holder character creation system, they knowlingly admit it is horrible and that they intend to eventually replace it and give us all 1 free makeover for our characters.. WTF!!! I mean seriously I play MMO's and RPG's to IMMERSE myself into my character to forget my life and become someone else for a little while. WHY would any SERIOUS game developer ever release a game they knowingly admit is crap or flawed??

Now on the other side of the coin, I have been begging them to make a game for real gamers again, something that takes a brain to play, TSW is a pretty good attempt at creating a game for real gamers, by real I mean geek gamers, the smart people. I mean so far I have had to learn morse code, and binary just to get past a few quests, and Im barely into the game.

All in all I would rate the game as loaded with potential, but how many damn times do we say well that game had potential too bad they screwed it up.

GW2 didn't impress me all that much yet many people rave about it.  Different strokes and all that.  I'm enjoying TSW a lot and its the best MMO I've played in years.

Perhaps people need to play less video games.

I play The Secret World because the setting is new, I like the fact its a more modern MMO. Im a little burned out on the High fantasy genre so its a nice change of pace.

The story in the game is very well written and the voice acting leads the NPC's around you to feel like a real part of the environment. Each character seems to have a distinct personality. I also love the atmosphere the game has its a very lovecraftian feel to it which also appeals to me.

The combat needs work but the depth is there so with a few tweaks it could be great.

I'm pleased with the direction and i'm looking forward to seeing how the game develops over the next few months.

The story did seem interesting and the atmosphere was decent but I just couldn't get past how incredibly boring the combat was in the BW's, I'm dumbfounded how well it's being recieved, although it also seems the praise will be shortlived.

Why does my wife play Facebook games more then i ever played an MMO ? Because she enjoys it.

Why does my daughter love to play Maple Story ? Because she enjoys it.

Why does my son play COD like its the only video game ever made ? Because he enjoys it.

Not sure why it bothers other people that there are players who enjoy games that those said people do not enjoy.

I do not see anyone attempting to force players to play any certain game, so i guess i am more confused as to why the OP is so bothered by people who enjoy something.

Thats enough to enlighten you? The quests in this game is really superior compared to any mmo's released to this date! Period.

Quests is why i play this game aswell.

Its the same reason why you keep making threads like these ;)

I play it because the quests are good, the story is well-written, and the atmosphere is top-notch. I actually started to get fairly tense during the first Illuminati faction mission, I've not seen darkness used so well since Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Combat is also fairly deep once you start unlocking more skills as well. I'm currently working on the 'Slayer' deck, but finding an intermediate build to use while I unlock the necessary skills has been somewhat challenging. I know there's an effective build with what I've got, the challenge lies in finding it.

Oh, and the game is just plain fun.

  • IlayaIlaya Member UncommonPosts: 661

For me it is mainly the Setting. I find the GFX outstanding and think that is because it plays in the "Now and here World". It feels just "real" in here. Also all the Details it has. What i also like, and call me crazy, the UI. This "App lokalike" style. I know, i know...you might say; Why do you play a Game cause of the UI? I cant give you a direct answer, but it also looks "up-to-Date", something from our world, things we have "now" and that somewhat attracted me.

Another thing what hooked me up is for sure the Story. Comparing it to other games, i dont feel that i am "on the run". I take my time, read all, it never get boring like the other Games out there. Zombies is another thing i like, so this is nice. And...tbh, another "taste", is the Mystic and Magic and whatnot.

Third thing to mention is the Questing or the Quests itself. Having a Game in place where you have finally use your Brain again feels just soooo good. I love it NOT to having a Questmarker, just some Hints and asking yourself where that can/could be. Sure thing, not everytime, but very often. And that, when you solve the Riddle by your own, feels just good. Also it brings up funny moments within Teamspeak when you try to explain something to a friend/guildmate without spoiling something.

Sure, it can be better, but is that not something we say about every Game, especially when it is new? Dunno. You OP asked, i tell you my points.

This is the first mmorpg that I have wanted to read every single bit of text that I find. Look at the enviroment and see if I can find something hidden, explore without having a set destination.. sure, many games let you do these things I just mentioned but there is generally no purpose "oh no someone smashed your pumpkins, let me guess, you want me to kill the zombies standing right on top of your pumpkins? fascinating Mirabel"

There is no big questhubs to speak of cause they want you to get invested in each and every single quest you find, to take your time and think about it. I have spent forever in just the first area, ive even went to the areas homepage and learned things that tie in what i experience in the game. I've googled what npcs tell me to look up and actually found what they meant.

I'm in it for the immersion and to have fun, like any person that plays a game, its not that strange really. :)

I'm not bashing anyone that likes Pepsi, it's just that they clearly have underdeveloped tastebuds, or perhaps they're still kids and love oversweetened drinks."

Sorry OP, but it all comes down to taste. Entertainment is entirely subjective. There is no universally "best" music, movie, play, game or TV show. I can explain to you in great detail why I think TSW is an awesome game, but it will make no difference at the end of the day.

I enjoy all the quests while knowing that the game is enormous and has meaningful content through the whole game :)

  • UNH0LYEV1LUNH0LYEV1L Member UncommonPosts: 571

For me the story and the quests are actually fun.  The quests are down right clever (investigation ones). I usually rush games to get the best gear/etc. But this game I bought the lifetime and am REALLY enjoying just taking it slow looking for lore items, listening to the story and bashing my head against the wall till i figure out the puzzles.  Because when I finally get it right its like FUCK YEA! I AM THE MAN!

Honestly though the combat is kinda annoying. I'm playing a healer build and my fingers hurt from how much i have to spam combo builders to use a good heal. I tend to tap buttons anyway to ensure they fire fast but this is rediculous, acutally getting a hand cramp.

All in all though the amount of effort that FUNCOM put into the storyline, each and every quest (yes there are some bugs), and the dungeons has made this game truely a fantastic experience for me.
