Wizard101 - How much does it really cost?

KezzadrixKezzadrix Toronto, ONPosts: 90Member

I was looking into a subscription for my young nephew because he's at my place often and likes to play games, but my games are not suited to his age.  The annual cost is $80 or so but I understand they also sell in-game items as well.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the game and knows if the "extras" that you can buy give you an edge over other players, or if it's merely aesthetics?  also, If it does give you an advantage, roughly how much more must be spent to get on the same level as other players?  as far as items go..

I was wondering more about in-game items and if additional things have to be bought to make the game more even among players. I believe that list shows the prices for each of the "worlds" within the game that can be purchased individually, but I think that you get all of those with a subscription. However, I could be wrong. so that's another good question if anyone knows  :)

Thank you cure01 for your post.

Have you also looked into Free Realms? Depending on how young your nephew is he might like that also?  Its age appropriate to 8-10 and up. Easy to pick up and even fun for adults... ;) Just a suggestion. Lifetime membership is 35 dollars i think. Or 4.99 a month through SOE.

Wizard 101 is a fun game,  I played it  with my 7 year old son and we have a blast. I would recommend that you get a family account this way you can play together. It can be difficult to complete some of the worlds without a friend. I believe you can both get a sub for around $15 a month, which is a good deal.

The stuff that you get with the crowns is nice, and does make some things easier, like leveling pets, but it's not necessary to enjoy the game.

From what is offered, a sub should be just fine for normal play.

Also here is the Wizard101 forums that should provide you answers from the actual game players as requested:

It will shouw both positive and negatives views about the game and you can use this info to determine if the game is the best fit for your nephew and what package would suit him.

    Good luck either way.

If you subscribe, you get access to all of the content until the subscription lapses.  Or you can buy individual pieces of content separately with crowns.  The crowns for content is an alternative to the subscription.

They do sell item mall gear that is markedly stronger than anything you can get by normally playing the game.  But you don't need that gear in order to clear the normal content.  It could be troublesome if you're into PVP, though.

Around the time I quit, they were starting a promotion where there was some really strong gear that you could only get by buying a timecard in certain real-life stores, so you couldn't even buy it with crowns.  I don't recall ever seeing any other game do that.

Nexon did that in mapelstory for a while with their game card sets.  It was a random chance to get an item that could be made to make powerful weapons/armor.
