EVE is a quality game. There is a lot Funcom will have to prove if they want to be compared with them. EVE:s server is fine. Why would anyone want to troll them?

People dont trust Funcom. its sad but they have earned that reputation. Some former AoC players are very angry and very sceptical. But I will give them a chanse and hope they will be able to offer the sort of quality and service we should expect from a serious company.

    Playing from Austria.

    Ping never goes over 100ms.

Noone in official forums is complaining about latency yet.

Nice try to troll and spread some more BS about TSW. Yeah, the start went just too smooth for our haters here and so they are trying it again. Pathetic to see always the same names on these made up topics.

No problens from Brazil, it's actually better than anyother MMO I played, (including the BR WoW server that is supposedly  located in Brazil).

it proves absolutely nothing you buffoon. I call it a trainwreck because that's what I believe it is. this does not make me care for the game in the least. Look, I wasn't taking sides, I just suggested that the people which clearly like the game and want to protect it from unwarranted hate should just put an end to this thread by proving them wrong.

According to LocalConfig.xml, the file with the server address and everything fo TSW, the patch server address is http://update.secretworld.com/tswupm

This IP address for it points to Washington D.C. and by the Win7 command prompt ping I get a ping of around 65 from Worms, Germany.

The live server address is um.live.secretworld.com. Here I get a ping of around 85 from same location, but the IP address points to somewhere in Serbia.

High Latency is almost always one of two things.  Either it's a local loop issue (not likely in your case given you good bandwidth test) or it's from a low quality peering relationship between two ISP's.  Your ISP especially if it's local has to peer to larger Tier 1 ISP's to get over the Atlantic.  Not all those relationships are created equal and some can create a fair amount of Latency on the connection.  If you did a Traceroute (assuming it's not being blocked) you will see the point at which Latency jumps way up and I would bet its the boundry between two ISP's.

That's why some people in Europe have better experiences than others, it all has to do with the quality of the peering.

I don't consider 158ms to be bad latency but you might.

Room for improvement for sure but do those figures cause you any problems? I'm intrigued because I just checked mine, which is running at around 100 ms and there's no noticeable delay with anything, everything runs smoothly and there's definitely been no sign of rubber banding or skill delay.

Obviously it is impossible to get that kind of latency from Europe to USA.

IP whois show that this IP is registered to Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

    Now small truth.

Ip lookup only show adress of company that registered those IP.

They can be registered by company in Germany and have Psysical server in Australia.

    Does not prove anything.

I can bet that patch server you got 65 ms to, was in Europe.

Just go http://pingtest.net/  and test your latency to servers in Washington or New York and generally USA East Cost.

I think this is your answer.

    http://www.highwinds.com/network/index.php

    That's who owns the IP

If your lucky enough to have a ISP that peers directly to Highwinds you probably get wicked fast service if not you probably have to go though one or two other ISP networks before you get on their backbone.

For a hardcore PVP player 158ms is a big problem.... People in Europe want to be able to play without problems. If they get 158ms or worse they have a valid reason to be unhappy.

I know who own it. Checked it up myself.

What I want to point out is because IP is owned by Highwind that have HQ in Phoenix, USA does not mean that psysical server is in Phoenix USA.

    Simple as that.

My ping to it which is 27 ms (from central europe) actually prove that 69.16.175.10 (IP of patch server I am getting) is NOT psysically located in USA.

Unless I have access to some alien-technology backbone that break laws of psysics.

IP lookups on whois pages mean exactly what they mean.

Who own certain IP. Not where certain IP is located.

Yes my crappy isp is probably the reason I am having from 140 to 200 latency:

    image

p.s. If you insist I can post the ingame screenshot (currently servers are down for maintenance) with latency too but I think you will now change tactic and say something else to mindlessly defend Funcom.

p.p.s. Oh yes I did notice people now stating that 150 ms is not bad - again: try to read somethig about good pvp. Latency is the most important factor. Even gear comes second.

Shouldn't we be doing a ping test to the server location (my understanding is that it's the East coast of America)

    Local ping results

    image

    To the East coast:

    image

Which puts it closer to the range of me getting 90-100ms in game

See? Now we are changing the subject. Wasnt the problem with crappy isp-s? Who is to blame that the (all) servers are located in USA?

  • CorthalaCorthala Member UncommonPosts: 283

Ypu guys focus to much on ms and ping when the main problems are:

1- We pay more...Almost every MMo

2- Downtime scheadule f* European plyaers

"you are like the world revenge on sarcasm, you know that?"

One of those great lines from The Secret World

Not changing the subject at all. Yes it would have been better to have a closer server but as they are using a single server technology what would you suggest? Have it in the EU and upset the rest of the world? I'm not saying the single server was a good idea, it's obvious we would have better performance if there was an EU server too. I'm just not seeing any effect on performance in game, very few people are and I'm seeing no complaints over on the official forums.

Most skills have a refresh timer of minimum 1 second, so how will this affect your ability to defeat that dastardly low latency american, because he's moving too fast for you to target him?

If any of you are experiencing higher latency than let's say 500ms, then I can see that it would be an issue, but this does not seem to be the case here. TSW is not a game of quick reflexes and a steady aim my friends, if you think that you obviously have been misinformed.

Have fun flaming me, I am gonna go play the game.

No you dont need an explanation, you need to try to pvp in a game, any game

and then you will see what is the most important factor to be effective in pvp... hint? no it is not gear

p.s. you are the one flaming people who have problems with latency but as you dont see the problem with that you dont see the problem with your interventions in this thread

You are right, and I am sorry for jumping down your throat like that. I will try PVP tonight I think, with my ping of 158 ms and lackluster gear I am guessing I will be eaten alive. Will report back on my findings. The explanation that followed your post actually made a lot of sense, but I am still not convinced that 150 ms will make PVP unplayable. I have played BF on servers with bigger latency than that and I was still able to make an impact. We will see, anyhow, sorry to see your experience of the game ruined by this.

    Cheers,

    Not unplayable, but:

    Scenario 1)

0.00 seconds:  Player A with ping of 50ms comes around the corner in front of you

0.33 seconds: You react by casting instant crowd control spell on your opponent (your ping 120 ms)

0.36 seconds: Your opponent starts casting the same crowd control spell on you

0.385 seconds: Your opponent's command to cast crowd control spell reaches the server

0.39 seconds: Your command to cast crowd control spell reaches the server. Your spell fails because you were crowd controlled at the time of casting

Scenario 2 - this happens only with badly coded servers:

Two people spam ability with refresh time of 1 second. Player A (ping 50ms) takes 1.05 seconds to cast it. Player b (ping 120ms) takes 1.12 seconds to cast it. Player B's damage is 1 - (1.05 / 1.12) = 6% lower than that of player B.

I see your point but if the whole issue reaches the leve in which i must get angry because the loss of a tenth of a second has made me lost a 6% damage on a spell i think the point to quit gaming has come. This isnt the olympic games. We are supposed to play to have fun. OFc i am not , nor will ever be, a dedicated pvper , so it may just be the wrong attitude on my part

Simply type /option latency_window true to display it and /option latency_window false to hide it.
