TERA: Brian Knox On Chronoscrolls

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

En Masse Entertainment announced Chronoscrolls for TERA, a way for players to earn game time using in-game earnings. It's a novel concept and one that Brian Knox wants to explain. Check out our exclusive interview!

MMORPG: How do the Chronoscrolls impact TERA’s game world?

Brian Knox: Chronoscrolls do not directly generate more or less money for the in-game economy. They are a way to barter time for money. Gold will change hands, but remain in the economy. We are also managing the hidden economic impacts by making chronoscrolls tradable only through the broker—and tradable only once. Additionally, players can redeem only two chronoscrolls to their account per week.

    Plex.

I think the whole idea is novel really.  I wonder how this impacts "gold farmers" as there is now a legitmate way of "buying" gold in game.

Just a glorified plex system. Nothing new to see here.

I don't think it impacts farmers all that much, because it just creates one more competitor.  Alternatively, it creates another way gold can be transferred around since item transfers and broker "mistakes" offer a way of laundering ill-gotten cash.

    In other words....just like PLEX.

They are selling for 2-3k gold... that's 2-3 hours of farming in game for a month  of play time...

So much lower than I expected.

    Hmm, interesting.

~but I wonder how high it may inflate based on demand. There is bound to be more people wanting to pay the sub through gold than those willing to pay outright for these. I may have to buy the box and use the first month to milk as many of them as I can before that sets in. Tempting...

Personally I suggest being patient and waiting for this game to go f2p.  My guess is it could be as early as fall.

If you know where to farm, you can farm that in < 2 days. That price is wayyyyy too low but some new people won't know that.

EME worked WITH CCP Games  to create this system so of course it was copied with permission.

You have to at least buy the game and the first month is free so technically the game can be just B2P.

I can see the game not go F2P if the Chrono Scrolls prices remain as low as they are. I'm considering cancelling my sub and just playing off of the Chrono Scrolls.

Another way to keep person playing... Not bad.

it's PLEX as many have said.

that being said i'm glad more games are using the system... people WILL buy gold/currency so it's nice to give them a secure way to do it.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Yea you have to buy the game first then the first month is free. So you can make this game like a B2P at that point.

i bought the game right after launch, played a couple days from the first free month. Thats why i ask. Not planning to resub. If i can get a chronoscroll to play more without having an active sub, thats what i want to know

  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 22,955

This is F2P by another name. Maybe the next 'news' item will abut some more content or the like...hmm more likely to be a 'news' item about free character transfers (server mergers) like we just had in SWTOR.

  • YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

    Sub cancelled.

Since they directly copied EVE here, and had their help according to that guy who's posted a ton in this thread, in EVE you can request a few hours of game time in order to purchase and apply a PLEX. TERA should allow the same thing but probably doesn't yet.
