Whats a good solo class? (but still useful in groups)

Trolldefender99Trolldefender99 Member UncommonPosts: 416

As title says...what is a good solo class, but still useful in groups?

Not Dread Knight or Disciple or Shaman or Necromancer. Disciple, because the class is really boring (to me) and I don't like the martial arts style classes in games. And I'm not a big fan of Dread Knights...would rather be a paladin if I was to choose a tank class. And not Shamans, as I got one to level 25, but just couldn't get into it. The pets are cool, though...I liked the wolf quite a bit. And Necromancer because...fun class...but getting grafts is too annoying. I tried for three hours (yes that long) to find any grafts at all, and found none. Just found nothing or junk. So I kinda just rage quit the class lol.

Not looking for the best or anything...but something that I can play at max level by myself, or at least be able to do stuff when not grouping. But at the same time, I still want to be useful to groups.

These interest me the most

Paladin

Druid

Ranger

Cleric

And these sound intriguing...

Psionicist

Blood Mage

Sorceror

Man, you sure about DKs? They're pretty darn good and they have sick utility abilities. Their "hidden" ability is a pure health drain spell on a short cooldown. They're good.

Pally for tank. They can solo very hard stuff. Probably the best group tank. can be slow solo though. find a good dps buddy

Sorc for dps. They have blow stuff up dps. Solo they can kite big mobs np

Ranger is the best over all class that levels up the fastest solo. The have the least down time to do so.

I wouldnt recommend the sorcerer class, since it's one of the worst for soloing (great for groups tho). For a good balance of both playstyles I would recommend a Cleric, Druid, Blood Mage or Psionicist (which is hard to play effectively, but once you master it, you can do quite well), apart from the ones you want to avoid (Disciple and Shaman). Then there is the bard, which is fabulous for groups, but very weak for soloing (you can run away from mobs, avoid them with invisibility, and have lots of other utility, but when it comes down to fighting, you are quite weak).

    REALITY CHECK

Yeah, the Bard looks like it would be TONS of fun in a group. I only got one to level 10 on the isle...but they were a lot of fun. I'll probably make one has an alt, solely for grouping.

As for what I'm good at? I actually really suck at tanking, but I still like Paladin (or at least WoW's Paladin, haven't tried VG's Paladin). Even if I suck at it, it is still fun.

I'm REALLY REALLY good at healing, probably the role I'm best at.

Crowd control I'm not nearly the best at, better than tanking, but I have the most fun with it.

As for the DK....as I said, I would rather just play the Paladin if I had to choose between the two, even if they aren't quite as good. My favorite class in WoW was the Paladin. It was the only class I got to max level, and could actually stand playing. I even made a Death Knight, and still liked the Paladin a lot more.

Runner up for WoW class was probably the Priest. I loved leveling the Priest in WoW, it was really hard, but a lot of fun. Probably had more fun leveling as a Priest, than a Paladin. Not the best soloist, but I was really good at healing in WoW, and I enjoyed grouping on the priest more than a Paladin.

I also really liked the Shaman in WoW, only because the totems were cool and Taurens were my favorite race...I liked the native american esque to them. A Tauren Shaman just made sense. A distant third, out of my favorite classes in WoW.

    (edit)

The other class I liked, probably more than the Shaman was the Mage. Very fancy spell effects (probably were my favorite in WoW), and the class was easy to play in groups, and soloed well enough.

I forgot to include, I'm good at DPS stuff...but that is pretty easy role to begin with

    (end edit)

My favorite class in EQ2 was the illusionist, and quite a bit more (but didn't play as it was "evil") was the coercer. I liked the flashy spell effects, until SOE nerfed them to Oblivion and Back. Then I lost interest in the classes...not because they were bad, but because I was really disappointed how badly the spell effects became. They nerfed them so badly, that even Hell felt the nerf.

The classes themselves were tons of fun. Probably the only ones I really really liked playing in that MMO. In EQ2 the Coercer could solo really easily, due to having that pet. Granted, EQ2 was kinda easy to solo (at least leveling up wise), with any class...but Coercer was the easiest for me. Runner up, and my main in that game, was illusionist. To top it off, they were really wanted in groups...so I could easily solo and easily group.

EQ2 and WoW are pretty much the only MMOs that have classes, that I stuck with for a while. Other MMOs just lasted a month, if even that.

Out of my top favorite classes, I would say in order

-Coercer in EQ2 (due to them being REALLY easy to solo (I thought so anyway) and really wanted in groups)

-Paladin/Priest in WoW (they are kind of tied...Paladin, because I tend to like Paladins in games anyway, and because they were just fun. Priest because leveling them was tons of fun, and I was REALLY good at grouping with them)

-Illusionist from EQ 2 (a really close third. I prefered the Coercer, since it was easier to solo, and still good for groups. But again, Illusionist was "good" aligned, so that was my main in EQ2. It was still tons of fun. Actually, if I remember...before the spell effects got nerfed (and why they aren't in second), is because their spell effects were AMAZING. More than Coercer, if I remember right. That was one reason I liked it so much.)

And I guess Shaman would be a really distant fourth. My only problem I had with the Shaman, is I just could never learn the class lol...totems and stuff were cool, though.

Also, a bit off the subject...but it is my thread any how ;P

I came out with a new quote of that essay of a post. I put it at the bottom of my signature lol.

    1. Best solists: Can tank mobs and handle lesser dungeons solo.

Paladin - Healing is good even in bad gear, but doesnt get better in good gear. Damage output before raids is really low. Also, remember that tank class performance depends a lot upon gear quality.

Dread Knight - can tank mobs and handle lesser dungeons solo. Thanks to area attacks, this is an awesome class against groups. However, solo performance is even more dependent upon gear quality than for Paladin, since weapon damage constitutes healing for the DK.

Cleric - low damage, but literally unkillable. Choose War for better solo performance.

Shaman - Bear is possibly the best solist of them all. Can get defenses like a tank at maxlevel, has more debuffs than anybody else, and great healing. Low damage output, though. Wolf and Phoenix though are less tough, Phoenix specifically is the worst of all healer solists and has to kite mobs (which Shaman cant do well since many of their attack spells arent instant cast and they dont have any consistent slow ability).

Disciple - The god of soloing. Dps output is better than for bear shamans. Thanks to massive aggro and good defense, they can operate as group tank through lower and middle levels. Also they have fake death.

Blood Mage - second worst healer solist after Phoenix Shaman. Even worse defenses than the later, and no ability to slow opponents at all, but thanks to lifetaps they can combine self healing and attacks and thanks to selfbuffs they have hitpoints like a tank. Cant handle multiple attackers well (has a root and a one-time charm though for them).

Necromancer - Pet class and can thus handle a lot solo. Also can fearkite.

Psionicist - As long as the dungeon supports crowd control, wellplayed Psis can do impressive tricks. Also good at kiting.

    2. Average solists: Cant handle getting hit, but can kite

Sorcerer - Massive damage output. Also can root mobs into place for a short time. Invisibility for avoiding mobs, too.

Druid - Root, snare, runspeed, dots, massive spike damage.

Ranger - Forget their heals. But they have anything one needs for kiting, except levitation (can get that with Artificer Carvings etc) - runspeed, slow spell, and massive ranged damage. Also can avoid mobs with stealth.

Bard - Runspeed and I think also slow. Sadly low ranged damage. Invisibility and Invis vs Undead, but not both at the same time.

Rogue - Runspeed selfbuff. Low ranged damage. Stealth to avoid mobs.

    3. Worst solists: Cant handle much solo

Monk - Fake Death specialist who can thus avoid getting killed most of the time. No kiting, no (noteworthy) self healing, squat.

Warrior - The worst solist ever. Cant do any tricks at all. Only run to the mob, maximize damage output, and hope the mob dies before you do. For some odd reason they can handle the best kind of ranged weapons, just like Ranger - but just like every other class except Ranger, they get no special abilities to use with ranged weapons, so their ranged damage doesnt compare to Ranger at all.

Thanks Adamantine :D pretty much sums everything up.

So, out of that list...I've narrowed it to Paladin, Cleric and Psionicist.

Maybe I can have all three has alts :P They are all pretty different enough.

I'll definitely have a Bard alt, they look like a lot of fun.

Hands down , Necromancer.( light Armor )  They travel with a small army , fiegn death if in trouble, self healing and devastating DPS. In group people need and love the buffs.

( Heavy Armor ) Then it's between a Pally and Dread Knight. That depends on play style and mobs you're battling.

    ( Medium Armor ) Disciples.

Those are the 4 most soloable classes in VG.

I may also suggest Bear Shaman , though you have to spec him properly.

Even though you find them boring they are the most soloable classes that are most group needed and that's what you asked. VG is not really a soloable game , in can be if you want just to level to 55 . To see all the content requires grouping. Of your list only Pally is on my list , but there are a lot of well established raid tanks out there.  Sorc's a Psy's are good , but rely on kiting and equipment to be effective , so you need room to operate in.

I had a bit of trouble kiting in this game with the tight rope the mobs seem to have.  I ended up run in a tight circle which can get a bit annoying.  Just wanted to toss this out there so that you don't expect kiting to be as easy and awesome as it was in EQ1.
