EL why its good and why I left.

It s good:   because the game developers are often right in the world with you. So you can talk to them about game issues and what you like and dont like about the game and whats going on. The mods of the game are also avid players and are always there to help.

I left becaue:   the game developers are often right in the game with you. They are a bit power mad and if you say bad things about the game the main dev himself may materialize in front of you and blow you  some crap. Also, the mods in the game are avid players and are always there to censor you and make sure nothing bad is said about the game.

Seriously the mods and devs are a petty and powermad lot. You can not say Runescape there. it will get you banned from public channels. When big changes are implemented in the game, there is a prohibition on talking about them for a month or so. If you do talk about them anyway.. youll get banned from the EL forums for 30 days.

Another bad thing is the game uses huge resources for lackluster graphics. if you dont have a great vid card you have to have effects all off. if you do have a great vid card you'll see things that would have been pretty spectacular in the late 90's.

Check it out though its not a bad game in and of itself. I swear though it will take less than a week for you to feel the oppressive hand of the petty leadership there.

    Agreed

It might not be so bad to have the devs so involved but they are really lacking in the skills department, not just the interpersonal ones either.

Moderators that play the same game as players are not really moderators are they? Just players you shouldn't try to complete with.

So you say the game is bad, because you can't say bad things for it in front of its creators and you can't say Runescape in chat ? Isn't that bit stupid and ridiculous ? If it was your game you would let someone to throw bullshit and you and stay out of it ? This game is developed by 1 person as a hobby and i don't think he the milions of dollars to make shiny engine . 90% of the games today which  are shiny and full of shit. If you can't come with constructive feedback and judgement about the game, don't even try it. This game has to offer a lot and it lacks some stuff. I know what the game needs, but none of that its mentioned by you :)

I have played EL for 2 years and I have to say it's a very disappointing game. I say this because it's a completely independent game, developed by a regular dude and his wife and a few collaborators who are/were EL players themselves. Without any corporate control. With limitless freedom...

... and then Radu, the main dev, chooses to cliché it up, instead of seizing the opportunity to innovate that no other MMO has.

He doesn't care about consistency or coherence either. He doesn't care about roleplay.

    It's a pity.

Shame...you get powermad admins in NWN also...

...makes you wonder why they made the game....and opened it up to other people....

From what I understand by just reading through the game's community forums (especially the Ban topic) it seems that the moderators who keep players in check are seriously suffering from some major god complexes.

Never, in any MMORPG community, have I ever seen forum moderators wield the Zeus thunderbolt so arrogantly, particularly Aislinn (one of the tin gods on the forums). They enjoy reading the pathetic pleads from banned players and purposefully inspire begging to get accounts unbanned. This is not only childish and immature...but it's unprofessional and distasteful.

So no...as someone who had an inkling of interest to give this game a try...I won't be playing a game who's moderators act as if they're untouchable paragons who swing the ban hammer at the simplest hint of disliked behavior. I mean really, I read a thread where someone made an honest mistake in the game, got banned for it, came to the forums and asked nicely for an unban and an appology...and one of the moderators respond with this, "Your post leaves a lot to be desired, and I don't think you're sincere." Just...wow. I'd tell these moderators to kiss my ass and stick the game up their's.

For a game that's old as hell, and suffers from a terrible graphical interface...these moderators need to come down off of their high horses, and stop acting like Eternal Lands is some sort of advanced "best in the world" MMORPG. Just the fact that they allow public disclosure of who was banned and why is extremely unprofessional, and should be done via private correspondence...you know...like most triple AAA MMORPG companies like to do.

First, sorry for raising the dead.

Secondly, I have had a wander through their forum after reading the quoted and I have to say the statement is reasonably accurate.  There are quite a few schmucks on there though that deserved everything they got.

The fact that they have a public Ban section is bad though.  Why, except for the perverse pleasure of publicly humiliating players would anyone do this, especially a company.  Despite the quality of the product be it great or naff, it does not do the devs any favours with regards to enticing new players.  Not good.

Finally, in the same Ban section there was this

    http://www.eternal-lands.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=56773

A demand for $5 to recover a players password.

I really dont know what to make of that since I have never played a game that has made such a request.

As far as the game goes though, its ok as long as you don't like eye candy.  I personally found it a bit slow character development wise but then again I have been tainted by games that bump you 20 levels in 5 minutes so you can justify spending in the cash shop.
