this sounds cool and all but doesn't really sound like something you'd compare to an rpg.

Then you're in luck, because I hear the next couple patches are going to bring in flying mounts and levels distinguished by the height of your shoulderpads. Also a Radiant AI system where zombie soccer moms pick their kids up from school at 3 pm and hit the sauce by 5.

Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture

That's why they are making a new 100 man raid!!! With bronies!!!

Ahh, but here's this:  We're talking Sandboxiness and Themepark here.

A Sandbox let's you try to do as many things as possible, and doesn't really guide you around.  The main gist is to let the player make his own adventure.  It's not structured.

Compared to a Themepark style where, especially these days, it's very heavily structured, and veering off a predetermined path is not optimal to your character's development.

The cool thing with this mod is that it's closer to certain elements of MMORPGs than modern MMORPGs are.  It's not as "massive" but multiplayer is everything in DayZ.  Friendly or unfriendly players?  You never know ahead of time.  And there's things to do together in a game that tries to let you do so much.  Not to mention resources can be scarce.  As someone mentioned in one of the above posts, him and his friend are down to 15 rounds total for their firearms.  They were setting out to fix up a car but that critical scarcity for ammo is diverting both of them away from the original goal.  Together, they can hopefully do something to rectify that, and survive it better as a team.

... Or maybe get the drop on some hapless fool for their goods image

Anyways, the game gives you a big world to freely roam around in, and do whatever you want.  The "RPG" of it is you getting to live out your own adventure, because the game + mod lets you do so much.

It doesn't hold you by the hand.  It's the parent that drops the kid off at the big playground and lets them run around freely and have fun.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Yeah, I read about DayZ a couple of weeks ago and downloaded it to see if it was much cop. Well, like the OP, it's the best MMO experience I've had in as long as I remember, and its not even an MMO. In fact it's one of the best gaming experiences I've had probably ever.

It's the absolute antithesis of what MMOs have become and more closely matches the potential that MMOs had 10 or more years ago. A massive open world with several cities, dozens of towns and villages and vast forests all set across a huge landscape. There's no hand-holding here, anything goes. Some players group together to survive in the safety of numbers, others camp in the loot rich cities to kill and rob those who come to find the stuff they need, others lone-wolf it around the world trusting no-one and relying completely on themselves.

You need to eat and drink, you need ammo and weapons to survive, you need equipment like maps, compasses and hunting knives to give you an edge in survival, you need road flares for the oh so dark nights. You even need medicine and blood packs to alleviate the physical effects of being hurt. In future updates you'll need to keep dry and warm in the realistically modelled weather system and environment.

You have a very limited, very realistic inventory system that means that every bit of useful equipment you find presents you with a dilemma. Do you dump that extra clip for your rifle or do you leave that can of beans behind? Do you take that assault rifle and dump your shotgun even though you've only got a single clip of rifle ammo?

There's no XP, no progression beyond the equipment you have, there's no end-game, no instances, no raids, there's no party system, no binding, no fast travel, no quests, no storyline, no designated PvP areas. And death is permanent. It is incredibly lean and extremely mean.

The only certainty in DayZ is that you *will* die. How long that takes is up to you and what you are prepared to do to survive.

    And it's all about survival.

It does give me some hope for the future of MMOs though. Despite the industry churning out WoW-clone after WoW-clone and more and more players drifting away from the ridiculous state of MMO affairs, DayZ, a mod for a 2 year old specialist game, has pushed Arma II:Combines Operations to the top of Steam bestsellers chart. There's a huge appetite for open-world, free-form games which DayZ proves. Even though it's still in alpha, and even though it can take an hour or more to get on a server that doesn't bug out before you get to play, the game is absurdly popular and becomes more so every day.

Playing it shows you just how fat and weak MMOs have become.

    Im sold. See you there.

Not if I see you first ;)

I'd agree with you there, but only because most MMORPGs have become so system heavy that their worlds and interactions are abstracted to the point that they simulate nothing.

Because it's hardly a game, it's mod for multiplayer MMO with persistent storage. It really doesn't tick any general MMO boxes, it's bit like MOBA but not really even that now. And this shows some of the negative points.

One annoying part is that devs don't own servers, so basicly if server admins is a-hole they can't really do nothing about it. There is quite lot stories how people are kicked out of servers so admins friends can come play.

Second is server population. Sure it's now big but sometimes you might end up server where 90% are teaming up against others. It ruins the experience badly.

Ofc lack of true control means no way to deal cheaters, other than kicking them maybe. It's a nice idea that deserves to be own game instead of just mod.

sounds/looks god damn awesome! Would play but if none of my mates will I won't bother. Wouldn't be as enjoyable.

Sounds interesting however I would never play anything that had perma death. Just cant see investing hours into game in order to start over again

    It certainly does.

Dean Hall is actually a game producer and the reason he started work on this mod in his spare time is that he couldn't get any backers to fund a project like this. He shares the frustration of a great many of us about the state of AAA games these days, where development money won't chase anything that hasn't been proved to death over and over again, or that isn't designed with the lowest common denominator in mind.

With Memorial Day coming I would think they will also go on sale on Steam at some point next weekend too.

I forgot to mention you will need both Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead, which are both included in Arma 2 Combined Operations or can be aquired seperately.

Yea it's a little process for the install but you go to the DayZ mod forums and look in the Troubleshoot part / or newbie section there is a stickied thread at the top showing how to install the files for the mod. It explains it for retail copies as well as for steam so it's a really nice guide that'll help you set up everything.

They also have a Downloadable software that will download and install all files for you, but thats on you if you want to trust that software enough to put it on your computer. I just used steam and followed their instructions. Takes about 10 mins to set it up after game is installed.

This mod is definately worth checking out, it is on par with Source from Counter-Strike and the popularity of it is well worth it. This mod is some good work and it shows me that freeform gaming may still have a chance. Gaming is an artform for real as much as it is a hobby / lifestyles and definately more than just some business model..

    +1 On DayZ

PM before you report at least or you could just block.

apparently you can use ARMA II free and just buy OA to use the mod, so it only costs £8.50

Dying is part of the game and is actually what makes it fun! It's not about being a badass with your gear and being the best. The fun is simply surviving the night for as long as you can. Death is inevitable, though. You will die and you will lose everything. But when you're playing you'll find that more often than not that getting the gear is more fun that having the gear.

    @Lashley,

That's correct. If you don't want to pay for the Combined Operations pack and/or don't want to download 14GB's you can use the free-to-play version of ARMA 2 along with Operation Arrowhead. Of course, as you mentioned, you won't have as good as graphics. I believe you can also use a pirated version of ARMA 2, but I wouldn't know for sure.

    Currently Playing:
    nothing :(

While it is 15 dollars cheaper on Amazon, than Steam, you do have to do a lot of manual downloading of patches to get this game caught up whereas with Steam it does that for you.

I am glad for the OP that turned me on to this game. I have been wanting somethig like this for awhile and there are a couple of other companies designing somthing similar (ther is one coming for consoles/pcs but I cant remember the name nor what decade they plan on finishing it)

For those who are POed about permadeath, it is zombie survival horror sim where permadeath is a valuble and important element to simulate the survivial part.

I am still patching this game but I plan on playing it soon and being a lone wolf for awhile until I get a good graps of the game.

Nothing else interests me right now until GW2 comes out.

    Exactly this ^

There's no survival without death and anything but permadeath isn't death at all.

Someone point the man at Kickstarter. Problem solved.

A lot of developers are using things like kickstarter these days to completely bypass that need for any other backer than the customer. I saw one manage several million when their goal was something like 100k. If I recall correctly, they were utterly stoked that people liked their ideas so much as to front them so much. They said it would go to making it even higher quality than 100k would allow.

MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P

Got a bit of a story of my own here :D

Just started today, and already I've been threw several characters. This is the story of my most recent one.

I had a character last an hour earlier. He died about half an hour ago. I started in a port city that seemed just fine at first. Of course, having been inside a village on a previous character, I knew the 'calm' was not to be trusted.

Scaling a nearby multi-storied building (not all are enterable though), I scanned my surroundings.

    Ho. Ly. Crap

    Utterly surrounded.

Somehow I managed to quietly, and very cautiously make my way past the zombies. Outside of the city, I found the bodies of several fellow survivors that hadn't made it. Clearly they had rushed, where I had chosen caution.

Looting their packs and filling my already almost full pack (Limited space. Go figure,) I explored the surrounding area of the city.

However, like the brazen fools before me, I decided to play rash and re-enter the city in hopes of finding better supplies. A torch, a gun, better medical supplies than a mere bandage, some medical syringes and a can of painkillers... heck... even a can of beans would have been nice. This was to be my downfall.

I slipped in to the city, remaining cautious. However, I found myself surrounded for several minutes with no chance for escape. The zombies had not yet caught wind of me, but time would soon change that. When I thought I saw an opening, that was it. Crouching, I slowly inched my way past the horde... only to be spotted by one. Blast it all, I should have gone prone!

With all the speed the game would allow me, I ran. Several were on my tail. I dared not turn and shoot in fear of alerting the entire city. When I thought the coast was fairly clear, I did what I knew not to do. I turned. I shot. And I alerted the entire damned city.

Three turned to five more. Eight to fifteen. I'm fairly sure I could hear the hungry roars of more, but it didn't matter. What few mags I could hold were depleted, I had no way of defending myself. I could not run. They had blocked every way out. The only thing I could do, was surrender myself to the fate my stupidity had decided upon.

    At least I died fighting.
