During the second era, in a time before any previous Elder Scrolls game, the world of Tamriel descended into a four-way war. In an attempt to conquer the continent, the Imperials – natives to the province of Cyrodiil – made a deal with the Daedric prince Molag Bal. At the beginning of Elder Scrolls Online, players will join one of three factions that not only oppose the Imperials and Molag Bal’s undead army, but will also battle one another for the imperial throne. Three different alliances. Three different philosophies. Three different ways to approach the game. Which will you choose? Today we take a deeper look at the Daggerfall Covenant, represented by the lion on the ouroboros.
Zenimax Online’s Take:
“There is a lot of historical friction between the redguards and the bretons,” explains game director Matt Firor. “There have been a lot of little wars between them, and there has been as much internal fighting in High Rock as there has been with external provinces, but it’s a much more settled area and a little more peaceful. The Bretons have given the orcs their own homeland within their territory, and all three races like and respect each other. This faction is a lot more democratic than the others.”
The Provinces:
High Rock sits on the northwest end of Tamriel and borders both Hammerfell and Skyrim. The area is highly fertile, features generally mild weather, and is largely populated by the bretons, though it is also the home to the orcs. High Rock was the location featured in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall – Daggerfall being one of High Rock’s oldest cities and its capital.
Hammerfell is an arid region composed largely of deserts, mountains, and grasslands. Home to redguards, Hammerfell is predominately an urban and maritime province. The interior of the region is thinly populated with tiny farmsteads and beast herds, while the outer rim is pockmarked with large trade cities.
Note: Many of the following screens are taken from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Only the main image above is from the development of Elder Scrolls Online.
The Races:
Bretons are the descendants of the humans who settled in High Rock. They are averaged-sized people with fair hair and fine features. Bretons are supremely intelligent, willful, and very outgoing. What they lack in physical skill, they make up for with their ability to weave spells.
Orcs are also sometimes referred to as Orsimer. This beastly warrior race hails from the Orsinium Area subsection of High Rock between the kingdoms of Menevia and Wayrest. Orcs are unflinchingly courageous and often feared, and orcish armor is often prized for its quality.
Redguards call Hammerfell home but love to travel and adventure on the high seas. Quick and agile, Redguards are often skilled warriors with a blade and shield, and are known for their hardy constitutions and speed, which makes them capable scouts.

Wow.
Instead basing the game around the current existing lore, they decided to re-write history all together, effectively giving a great big slap in the face to all the people who carefully established over 5,000 years of history.
My worry is more with the Khajiit, and also the Imperials. After the end of the Potenate, there was little "government" to speak of throughout Cyrodil. It was a collection of warlords. How do the Imperials manage to organize enough to create a pact with a Daedric prince, especially given their Allesian heritage?
That's an awful lot of lore to retcon.
I want to be a Khajiit trader...other than that I couldn't careless about factions and junk. I'm a hunter/trader in skyrim, and I can sit around all day killing elk for hides, and be content and happy. I'm tired of being a hero
to be fair the game is set in distant past before any of the current games. That said, did I count 3 races? wow are they sure they can handle that many?

Of course, but there are still some guidelines for the lore during this time. While I'm waiting to see more, I already see them running afoul of a few.

You know, the more information they release about the game, the worse the pain in the pit of my stomach gets.
It's like finding out that the child you raised and cherished for 18+ years, was just found eating one of the neighbors. The sheer and utter dissapointment makes you physically ill.
It's sad, and pathetic, I know. But I always thought that Bethesda and the ES game would be the MMO to show the rest of the genre that a sandbox MMO with the backing and experience of a company that knows how to make a great world, works.
I'm not even a lore hound, but good lord. Do they not know that Bethesda has thousands of years of lore written out in a frigging wiki!?
My understaning is that it's three races for the faction alone, there are two other factions the hoity toity elves and the Blach Marshes is it? Can't remeber if the article said the third faction and not bout to bother reading on a game that has my stomach in knots with dismay and dread. I think all races will be playable except maybe the Imperials as it seems they are the naughty ones here. But three races per faction seems pretty limited but then again there are three factions.
Not very thrilled on the development but will wait and see how it goes along with their buisness model.
I am getting a certain deja vu when I read your rage...
... almost like every instance of "ES" could be replaced with "LotR".
(Not saying *you* in particular, just that the exact same points could have been made about LotRO)

Much more of that and people are going to riot once they see more in-game screenshots
The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

Race + Faction lock = FAIL
What if I want to play a Breton, but join another faction? Or no faction at all?

I do not have enough palms or faces to express how much this irks me. You're probably right "but if you don't start in a faction based on race that will CONFUSE EVERYONE!" Uuuuuugh...
The releases a few days ago the Aldmeri Dominion faction; High Elves, Bosmer the Wood Elves, and the cat people. So that leaves the Black Marshes with what... Argonians, Nords, Dark Elves? Any one wanny lay odds on what faction will be grossly over populated and unbalance all of the PvP due to numbers?
Seems like mistake after mistake is happenening.
