is everyone (not really refering to the op here) getting more misinformed or is it just me? you have five weapon skills, one healing skill which you choose, and four other skills which you choose. specialize all you want. play well and you'll do fine.

EDIT: do what you want op. that's sorta what gw2 is about. you want to dw swords? more power to you.

Ive never played any game before, where I chop down a tree, carry the wood plank in my hand, and get a skill set involving the plank that allows me to attack things with it.  I can pick up a friggin rock and use that too.

Yes, that is serious innovation.  I'd imagine a mug of ale comes with a skill set.

And while yes, I do typically use one weapon and specialize in it in any mmorpg I play I usually am also carrying a couple of others to use as I see I need too.  Some weapons are better for some situations.  I might run around with a two handed sword most of the time, but then switch to a one hand and shield when I need some extra protection.

This is the same here only more so.  You will need to swap out weapons for different situations.  In D&D when I played with my friends, I'd get out a mace to attack skeletal warriors because its better for crushing bone.  And a sword for more fleshy types.

GW2 is not all that different in that respect.  This is something games have been doing for awhile.   But the fact that weapons give skills in GW2 is something I cant praise enough.  As some have said, if you arent changing up weapons occasionally then you are playing it wrong.

Yes this is innovation.  Switching out weapons in games during special circumstances is old school.  But the way GW2 is doing it is phenominal.

Actually, like the OP, I have a very specific preference when it comes to weapons. I like using Bows and Swords exclusively. If the game will require me to swap weapons to maximize my output I guess I'll play a very minor role in PvP or avoid it entirely.

    Don't play then.

I'm guessing this smart ass doesn't know that I've been following the game as well, and like all the other "fans" who have something particular in the game they don't agree with, I am willing to compromise because the other aspects of the game outweights my concerns.

    Don't play then.

If you like bows and swords, play a ranger?

You get a choice of two bows, dual wield swords or a two handed sword. In fact a long bow and a two handed sword will give you a decent amount of diversity for weapon swapping while suiting your preferences.

Let me warn you right now, if you want to specialize, this is the wrong game. EVERYTHING about GW2 screams against specialization and leans heavily towards flexibility and balance. You can't be a pure tank/heal/dps type... instead you'll equip skills that do any combination of support, control and damage (usually more than one aspect). You can't stick with only one weapon type, attunement, etc. and be able to play to your full capabilities. Specialists will fail, and fail hard.

Then that's back-asswards game design. Specialization should be just as viable as being a 'jack of all trades' type. If I want my thief to use dual pistols exclusively, I should be able to do so. In fact, I should be able to specialize into them to the point where more generalist characters can't use them as well as I do (which is the whole point behind specialization). The trade-off would be that I lose some utility afforded by other weapons.

Bottom line is, both playstyles should be viable. Arenanet may have gotten rid of the trinity, but they're still forcing people to play the game a certain way. It's the classic 'illusion' of freedom.

"Your target is out of range" "Your target is out of range."  Sure wish i could toss a bow on and go to town instead of being a useless melee.

Boss fight not melee friendy?  Guess i'm out of luck with my swords.

I take that back.  Due to my stubborness, i'd rather be less affective for my team.

Be a ranger.  That's like half your weapons right there.

Dual swords, long bow, short bow, greatsword.

You're good to go. ;)  Nobody will even notice you're playing such a specific weapon choice, unless you tell them.

Im sorry but in most other MMOs  every player who has a <insert class here> will have the same skills regardless what weapon is used. In all MMOs to date one just simply has to roll their hand on the keyboard from 1 to 9 to win.

Face it,  in every MMO you are stuck with that same skill you got at level 1, all the game did was upgrade it at certain levels to do more damage.

In GW2 you have traits that can alter what goes on with your skills.

I really don't think MMOs are your genre if you dont like repetitiveness to the highest degree.

Yeah I plan to play as a ranger, as I do with all other MMOs I play (whenever possible). I'm just empathizing with the OP.

Any game forces you to play a certain way, this one just gives you more options than others but there are still certain restrictions in place. Certain encounters require you to be in melee, certain ones require you to be in range.

This is how the game is, if you don't like it, I don't know what else to tell you.

Thats exactly how the Trait system works. Go look it up.

They arent forcing you to play any way. If you are awesome at using two pistols you can, and you can build your entire trait tree around it. But the option is there to add extra diversity by weapon switching.

    Look up traits.

You can specialize in a weapon, and be better at a certain kind of weapon than other people.

... but if you insist on using your guns even in a situation where they're at a clear disadvantage =even with the boost from traits= (Say, in some sort of melee situation, or a time when you really need the extra maneuverability of the shortbow teleportation shot), then you're going to be gimping yourself.

... but you can make yourself better with specific weapons, to the point where in GENERAL, you'll be better with them.  Just, no matter how good you are with a hammer, sometimes maybe you'd like to use a screwdriver. :T

Thief can use a sword/dagger combo and use a short bow. That's about it, I think.

It sounds like GW2 just isnt for you. Can I make some suggestions of other games you may enjoy?

SWTOR's is a brand new game that many enjoy..........though you will only be able to use 1 weapon through your entire career.

Tera is another very popular game you might have heard of.........you again only get 1 weapon your entire game career.

I know The Secret world has a very flexible weapon system, maybe this would suit you.

I'm honestly shocked that trollish  threads like this exist when SWTOR's stick you with a particular light saber for the rest of your characters life.

Anyway's I hope you find a game that you enjoy since GW2 won't work for you. Cheers!

ArenaNet has already stated they have a love for eSports, with many of them fans of the MOBA genre.

In games like League of Legends you only get 4 skills, but it's the way you utilise those skills that sets you apart from another player.

The amount of weapon choices and the combinations available is quite large actually, so a thief who has a dagger in his main hand and pistol in his offhand will play differrently to a thief who has a pistol in his mainhand and a dagger in his offhand.

Not sure what people are complaining about. Personally, I prefer having 5 weapon skills and 5 utility skills opposed to having 3 bars of hotkeys to memorize.

I'm not sure why you made this post, did you get lost on your way to TSW forums and get confused? I'm sure in that game you'll be able to use you 7 active and 7 passive skills and only a sword to your heart's content.

I'd be willing to bet that if you want to only use dual pistols, you'd end up being better at using dual pistols than most other players.  However, you probably wouldn't be as effective overall if you only used the pistols.  So, it's not an "illusion" of freedom.  You have the freedom to do what you want.  Some choices (like in any free system) are just better than others.

I've played quite a few RPG style games over the years and have found that using only one weapon, no matter how good it is, tends to be a handicap.  In almost all cases, it's good to have different weapons and skills to use to fit certain situations.

It's not about "God forbid" anything. The game is designed a specific way. It appeals to some, to some it doesn't. If it doesn't appeal to you, don't play it. End of story. Nothing more to talk about.

And FYI, you have more than 5 skills, the first 5 are dedicated to your weapon, the rest you can change. Exactly how this is a problem is beyond me, considering that in every single MMO out, you pretty much use the same 5 skills over and over and over and over again anyway with an occasion tap at utility skills in another bar. My mesmer will be Staff predominantly. He'll have a scepter for those cases when the group could use the support skills it comes with, but otherwise it's all about staff for me, and what I'll be using 90% of the time. Sounds just dandy to me.
