Big seemless world. Most of the upcomming games seem to fail in this area. Why? SWG mananged it 9 years ago and WOW 8 years ago. SWTOR failed at this big time and it's looking like GW2 might as well. Were devs really better a decade ago?

A loading screen is not a big deal to me.
Why is that important? Diablo 1,2 and 3 has no seamless world and it is still a great game. WOW has lots of instances too.
Too bad no Diablo game is an MMO. Of course, nowadays, neither is WoW.
ok im sick of people praising SWG, there was nothing good about that game, it was probly the biggest fail ever in MMORPGs i bought the game played it first day it came out and played it for 4 months. it was horrid theres a reason it has dissapeared from existance

It may have been really good on paper, but the implementation of those features was god awful.
Buggiest, broken, most imbalanced game I have ever played (besides Vanguard!)

SWG wasn't seamless. Matter of fact, it's not much more seamless than TOR is. If you took a shuttle, you got a loadscreen. Leave the planet? Loadscreen. In contrast, TOR is only less open due to the "green areas", the...ummm... instant instances. Everywhere else, the screens load in exactly the same places as SWG.
And WoW isn't exactly a completely open world, either. If you teleport or use your hearthstone, you get a load screen. Dungeons are instanced. Areas like the train from humans to dwarves is instanced. Granted, it's pretty smart instancing; being able to run/fly almost anywhere without a load screen is pretty cool. But you still have loadscreens
Large seamless world really isn't that important to me, but the over use of instancing is a big turn off.

You could add Lineage 2 to that list. At least the old Lineage2 back in the 8/9 years ago you're talking about. No idea if it has become segmented in recent years.

True enough... though I don't recall it being my choice to play "rubber bandy" or with a crapload o' bugs. I suppose it WAS my fault that I insisted on playing a pistoleer/smuggler even though i was gimped beyond imagining.
Yes both those games has open world with massive content on every level not the simplified games we get today that are all about fluff. Don't forget actual gameplay. Both those game released today would fail because of the current gaming community thinks games should be movies not challenging games with content.
I don't think that's what the OP meant. In SWG, you could go anywhere on the map. It was a giant square that had no exaustion area's or mountainous paths that couldn't be walked or rode over. The only place that you got stopped was at the edge of the map.
In TOR, you can go off the path, but it's still zoned in. You can only go to certain areas on the map, instead of being able to use the whole map, so to speak. TOR leads the player through these defined roads and passages to the next area.
Shuttles and off planet are the same, accept, SWG was much faster than TOR. It is also worth mentioning that, the way TOR has the faction areas sperated from one another really closes the planets in as well.
Really the biggest difference is, In TOR, i can see a ship or whatever off in the distance, but i can't go to it. In SWG, what i seen, i could go to. It really is what makes a mmo have a great exploration system and one that doesn't.
A lot of games managed it years ago and some games still manage it. It's just no design priority for current AAA games that are more focused on small maps/instances. Small maps/instances are more convenient for casual and competitive players.

How could anyone not like all of the choices SWG had. I am betting his wife got irate when she caught him playing a female DANCER Twi'lek and now he is bitter. SWG will always be my favorite MMO since it was my very first. I just don't understand why todays developers do not try to mimic that style.
Instances =/= Seamless
60% (guestimation) Borders poorly disguised as mountains =/= Big
Not a fan of WoW in recent years, but I have to go with you on that one. A seamless world is like electricity,you take it for granted when you have it, but when a storm knocks it out and you are stumbling around in the dark and eating cold sandwiches it seems like a luxery all of the sudden. WoW ,which I will probably never play again, has a world that is a pleasure to traverse.

Some people wanted to play an rpg, not a "my role in the economy" simulator. Seriously, is there a single IP that is a worse fit for that type of a game than Star Wars?
Anyway, that being said, it is obviously many people's ideal game type, and I imagine something like it coming around soon to fill the void.
The problem with most games trying to do a seamless world today is that the graphics are more intense and it would lag the gameplay big time.
Why does everyone think WoW was a seamless world. It really was not. Dungeons were instanced and the continents were instanced. WoW is a invalid game to use when trying to make this point.

I have memories of getting on my bike my Engineer crafted and riding forever until I came to a coast, then I would get on a boat, ride it somewhere, and get back on my bike and ride,ride ,ride, through beautiful pastel forests, through swamps , over rivers, past angry Hordes with big sharp swords....splat...

No, not necessarily. Although the graphics are a factor, this is where the illusion part comes in. Seemingly seamless worlds with decent graphics are doable.
