cost of archage sandbox.

Bobbie203Bobbie203 Member Posts: 136

Yes it started with $10 million XL, $25 million investors in korea. Someone mentioned they received $40 million with AA in china. This game could reach $50-65 million when archage is done.

so its safe to say its around $50- 65 million in development, if they use the $40 from tencent profit as well.

This is the biggest budget sandbox the world has ever seen.

This game could revolutionize asian mmorpg perspective form the western players.

Hell this game could revolutionize sandbox since the days of ultima online.

It is the first largest budget development sandbox since well never, not one single sandbox mmorpgtoday has the size of archage.

And just think, it still will have bucket loads more of systems and tools than other games that are costing into the 100 millions.

What other games.  ToR is the only game to cost more than $100 million.  WoW was 2nd at $75 million in 2004, Rift 3rd at $50 million then Vanguard and EQ2 at close to $25 million. Put in perspective and $50-65 million is huge and will be the third most expensive MMO ever made.

Since when did develop budget determin if the game ends up good / popular etc? I mean, who knows maybe they spend 10mil on company partys for beer and half naked girls... :)

UO had compared to above mentioned games, a tiny budget... And it ended up quite well. Cant buy Originality with money. Just need the right people behind it.

well aa is not finished yet its in beta stage and it will be released in asia first, then they will find publishers in eu and usa.

the difference between archage and swtor, wow, rift. Its the biggest budget sandbox, while the other games are themepark mmorpgs.

Dont forget the director wants to replica ultima online as close as possible that was his goal for archage.

I am super stoked for this game as well. And no there isn't a NA publisher yet.

If it's say Actishit or Enema Activities the game will end up a WoWcrap clone with a cash shop by the time they are done with thier "addendums" and garbage.

It will end up right at release more or less a Niche product initially. Like EvE.  They should just publish it themselves (the Archage guys I mean). No hard copy just digital download it in NA through Steam etc. Something along those lines. Problem solved.

God just stay way from the "big name" publishers. All of "our" (NA pub) guys only want to take a game , hollow it out and fill it with monetization gimmick garbage and run it fast and hard till it goes FTP. Then they move on like locusts to the next creative vision they can fuck up over money.

I can actually speak a good little bit of the Korean language, enough to survive there if I had to etc but I can't read Hangul to save my life. :( otherwise I  would find a way to just play on the Korean servers.

There will be no instance in dungeons for pve, its pvp at its finest.

boss mobs will drop unique items, so yea it will be really interesting to see who can steal it from one another.

i would love to see if guilds will contest the pve dungeons and bosses.

What i was getting at is that, AA will have a shitload more systems than all those other games combined and doing it on a lesser budget in some case's or about the same in others. You can't help but be somewhat impressed with the amount of stuff the game will have in it, that goes way beyond the traditional themepark mmo's that have been released in the last few yrs. and brings back the sandbox that alot of people desire in their mmorpg's.

rest assured though you wont be feeling safe running pve dungeons in archage, this is not wow not instanced dungeons.

There will be pvp in pve dungeons for sure. :D

I don't think it's a "Sandbox" with all the thempark quests, but it still looks like a good game. As for the budget I'm sure coders, and programmers in Korea prob get paid less. So it has to do with cost of manpower not amount of manpower. The could have twice as many coders for all we know. So you can't really look at it in terms of bottom line money. American developers don't have the same option for coding unles you want our games outsourced now too.

I am sure companies like SOE and NCSoft don't consider Asian programmers to be a viable option. I am not from the US, make the games with Korean programmers and have twice the variety or twice the quality per $

And it will read like Zero Wing.

We need a NA/EU publisher, or we won't get the game in english.  Thats a big make or break thing for people, english.

You don't have to pay developers in Korean anywhere near as much as you'd need to do so in America.   This helps keeps the human cost much lower.

Lol, however even if you managed to learn the correct language to log on more than 3 times out of 5, I expect you would soon be the target of a crack team of Korean schoolkid pirates who would take your pants and tell you to be on your way

Ahh, good thing they didn't blow wads of cash on voice-overs and one-time content.

However, they did spend a good portion on amazing game systems, and many of them. I'd throw the term "innovative" out there but it's already overused.

(Humor on, you know, that laughing stuff... and no not the guy being torn apart by lions laughed at)

Innovative... doesn't that mean "Old and tired rehashed mechanic we will dress in pretty new cloths"

Revolutionary... done before 20x but we will convince the fanboi's we were there first

Paradigm Shifting... Umm, err, we ran out of Innovative and Revolutionary tags and made some new ones...

    (humor off)

I just want XL to pump out a stable and sane game that isn't pushed out too early, isn't too feted by fanboi superlative comments.  So far I have been pleasantly surprised, but also somewhat depressed. Swimming and Tractors are cool and all, but what about the other half of the races and such.

So, I will remain fighting myself daily... Fanboi! Rational! Fanboi! Rational! Idiot! Moron! ...sigh...

The amount of money being spent is encouraging.  Normally I would think it would be almost impossible to make a quality sandbox as there simply is not enough money and time for developers to add in many features into a release along with quality and polish.  BuT AA has one huge advantage in that it willl get released to in the east foist where players are more mature, understanding, patient and willing to wait on a game to be finished.  Then in 1.5 years or so it will likely be released in the West.  Giving AA time to add content and polish.  Seeing the amount of money they are spending is very encouraging.  It does not mean they will spend it well but it adds a lot of hope.

AA is a rare oppurtunity where signifigant money is being invested in a AAA sandbox game with building and construction.  If it fails it is unlikely we will see another game like it. If it goes down many sandbox fans hopes will likely be gone.  In a way its a lot like Vanguard which attampted to go big with many old style EQ features that included a lot of unfinished features at launch but with some amazing robust gameplay with a huge world, 16 classes, 19 races, slow leveing (the first 3 months) and many additional features such as hosue building, boat building, diplomacy and complex crafting.  Vanguard failed and with it the promise of similar games recieving funding failed with it.  AA is sort of like that in its the big chance for Sandbox, crafting/construction and city seiging fans.  If it does well in the west we will likely see more games like it in the future.
