Wait, so you mean i can in theory buy more character slots without spending more money?

This is exactly how I feel. The people who like to spend real money are happy and those who don't are happy, plus ANet is happy enough to release more expansions and features.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Finally someone that seems to understand. my only worrie so far is that the gems will make the ingame gold vallue near to vallueless, but we have to see how that works out.

not at all, remember it will not be pooling as the gold sink via influence vendors will eat that up. I think it was a curse vid that showed that particular vendor and the items were pricey. Those will keep value for gold alone.. also just lvling tradeskills and such. Many, like myself, will be lvling all tradeskills which is again a pricey thing to do. The influence thing esecially since at least  the PVP/PVE buffs aren't permanent so people will always buy influence to keep those buffs up.

Gold doesn't magically materialize in this system.  With gems you can only buy other players' gold, aka gold that has already been earned by another player and already exists in the system.  There will be no inflation as a result of gold > gem exchanges.  It results in zero net gold change within the server.

  • XzenXzen Member UncommonPosts: 2,607

All I'm getting out of this Gem system is that I might be able to get the expansions and extra character slots and vanity items with out spending anymore real life money than the initial purchase of the game.

Agreed. And assuming gems are spent as they're purchased, there won't be an oversupply of gems on the market either. At first glance, it seems pretty solid to me.

I agreee about the slots and vanity items but id be very surprised if they allowed to buy expansions with gems. Maybe adventure packs but im doubtful too. Its a business after all.

Hey, someone bought those gems from Anet. Why not allow us to buy expansions with 'em.

probably a very good chance that will happen. I hope so.. will give people low on cash a way to get future expansions.

Actually, there's a very high chance that using the "Gem Exchange" will take a small percentage of the gold transferred, which means that it will actually serve as yet another gold sink. Imagine that. You're actually helping the economy when you buy gold.

Exactly. Anytime you buy something with gems, that item was payed for in full by someone. If ArenaNet lets you buy expansions with gems, it's as though someone is buying an expansion pack for you in exchange for gold. It's a beautiful system because ArenaNet gets the same amount of money either way, and it serves as a small gold sink at the same time.

I never thought it that way. But now that I think about it...ArenaNet is genius :).

Looking forward to EQL and EQN.

It is a very good flipside isn't it? :)

I think the reason people are panicking is because a lot of games just tack on microtransactions. If the system is well thought out, it shouldn't be an issue. It also means that any items in the store will now be available to all players via the investment of time :D Which is pretty nice really. I'm sure there's people here who would have happily paid some platinum to play the bonus mission pack in GW1 for example, but didn't really feel it was worth actual money.

Most likely there will be a fee for selling gems, its typically not that bad though - probably 5% gold earned.  It is the same way an auction house does it.  The broker needs to take a cut just like in a stock market.  Most games that do the real-life currency to in-game currency exchanges have this spread to cause a sink.

I have not followed this in detail, but I it sounds interesting in theory and a proactive change to the system.

Over at gw2guru they had a post from GW2's community manager where he mentioned that it should not devalue gold because you can only buy gold that has been put into the system by players. So it seems like you wont be able to buy gold unless people are buying gems with gold.

That gold is coming from other players. So somebody must have an abundance of gold if he trades it to a player. The system is not adding new gold from the outside.

Another thing I think will/might happen is that we go back to item trading economy instead of gold trading. Like diablo 2 and some other mmo's.

Dungeons and Dragons Online actually did a pretty good job with how they handle their cash shop, making players have the ability to earn points for playing and slowly gaining more and more content. In terms of GW2... the gem system itself seems a bit... to far... I suppose. Its not some little side note, its actually a pretty large part of everything. In DDO you worked to gain extra content and little features, in GW2 those in pay money (in the current state of how gems are mentioned) get a lift over you in all areas of the game.

I would really need to see how it is at launch. Right now its quite a big red flag. I know Diablo 3 auction house does in some form do this... but I just feel so much more uncomfortable with the gem system in GW2 for some reason... *shrug*

I'm glad to see the first rays of sunshine breaking through the clouds of panic, but purchasing entire XPacks might be a tall order. Someone is going to have to want a LOT of gold to trade enough gems to pay for an XPack.

There is no gear treadmill according to GW1 players. All of the best looking stuff is coming from dungeons and Karma. So why trade my real money gems for in-game gold if it doesn't really buy you anything worthwhile?

I expect that even a single gem will cost a ton of gold, since it seems like most of the convenience type items are only available in the store, and people will tend to just use their gems there.

afaik, there is a percentage fee for the selling of Gems, which could be considered a method of 'destroying' gold.

If I understand it correctly - and I am not well informed about it - if a player spends say $100 Gold to buy a gem, and 10% is the fee, then $10 gold is 'destroyed' (removed from players).

Do I have to buy gems with gold? Will I not be able to sell items and goods for gems and/or gold on the market? Also as a merchant if I am trying to get gems my goods might have a lower gem price compared to gold price. Also considering that the Gems have a real world curency attached to them it would make sense for Anet to allow us to purchase expansions with them.

Well, if they go all the way with this idea and with copying Eve, I'll also be able to sell my level 80 characters.  As an avid alt roller, I expect this to pay for all the diamonds I could ever want, including a second account with all conveniences, bank space, and character slots unlocked.

I mean, why not?  It's the logical progression of this concept.  It will hurt account selling RMTers, it will let people trade time for real life money, and if everything else being discussed is okay, why shouldn't this be okay, too?

Don't think you can actually turn gems back into real life money. Sounds like all you can do is buy stuff from their store with it. As for selling characters for gems if Anet makes a way to do that through their system it doesn't bother me.

    a)is a good thing.

edit:i can imagine  there will be zounds of funMMObunnymonstagold.$$$ sites selling accounts with capped character slots and full expansions and zillions of gems and karma and gamers are not the winners in this case.

this is gold selling sites wet dream, they can milk players money in-game.

I don't see why.  I'm good at rolling and leveling alts and I have time to do it, why shouldn't I be able to trade those alts for diamonds so I can buy all the perks and conveniences?  People with money who don't like leveling can just buy my alts with diamonds.  Everyone is happy, right?
