If I led a big WvWvW pvp guild, the first thing I'd be doing is stocking up on gems, some as an investment for later in hopes prices go up, some to use as soon as the first botters...I mean players...offer gold on the market (As someone already pointed out, gem prices will probably go up, meaning gold sellers could directly trade their gold for gems at first and still expect to turn a profit later by exchanging them for more gold than they paid, then selling that gold directly to players willing to step outside the gem system).

Next I'd rush everyone to max level as fast as possible for the advantages having all skills gives.  Even if it's only a small advantage, 50 people working together with that advantage against 50 who don't have it are going to have a very easy time of pvp. (Note:  this is going to happen regardless of the currency system in game, it's just standard pvp guild behavior, but if in any way gems traded for gold quickens or eases the process, guilds will take advantage.)

Now my guild can buy siege engines and other pvp advantages with gold that I got, not by taking the time to farm it up as we leveled, but by trading it for gems bought with real money!  Jackpot!

This scenario is disgraceful.  If it's true that pvp equipment can be bought with gold, WvWvW will be all about wallet wars.

oo! this made me think of another similar system. Turbines LOTRO.. where you can buy shop items from achievement currency. The reason I thought of that is the whole content/dungeon issue I was talking to someone about, because in LOTRO you have to actually buy zones/quest packages. Now this is another extreme case because LOTRO is now F2P so obviously they are selling more than Anet will, but say you want to get that extra quest package they offer on the cash shop.. like the one they have for GW1. You can.. whether you can afford the RL cash or not.

If the game is good and I can save my gold I make just from having fun then can use it to buy things I have np with it at all.

Thats one of the big points a lot of people are missing. This makes it fair to everyone. YES there is a cash shop, but now you can still play completely free and just sell your in game earnings for cash shop credits instead of spending real $. Some of us have lot of time and no money, some of us have lots of money but not as much time, and some are in the middle. Thgis helps balance evrything for everyone. Those with time can play free, those with money can spend it instead of time, and either way the end result is the same.

This isnt the first time its been done. In fact even RoM (Runes of Magic) had a similar system (until they got greedy and went pure CS), and even Rohan had their exchange market where players could sell items and even entire characters for cash shop credits. Ive been bringing those 2 up for years and hoping more F2P games would adopt this method instead of pure cash shops. The fact that GW2 is going this route with their cash shop is an even bigger bonus.

Some would make you feel dirty and evil for that! You need to stop spending time with your family and job and play for 8 hours a day like an MMO is meant to be played!

Its really not any different than forming a guild in any other new game and having people farm their asses off and pwer level eachother. I know youre trying to make it sound like its different, but its not. There will always be those who work faster and in large groups than the rest of the playerbase and get ahead early on, but after a few weeks it wont matter. Besides, in GW2 your level will scale to the area and level gains are flat over time, so you wont really be able to get ver far ahead anyway. Its going to take you just as long to level as it does anyone else playing the same amount of time regardless of the cash shop.

Moral of the story is...invest in gems ;).

If you want to get money in GW2, I would try to spend all your gold on gems early and then just hold onto them...they will likely appreciate quickly.

very accurate =D but! what would you spend it on? Personally I would spend money on guild influence and not for PVP reasons.. but thats just me. Also I want to max all tradeskills on 1 toon and I hear thats expensive.

    What is REALLY funny?

All that money and time you spent to upgrade the hell out of your WvWvW map and win would mean jack shit in two weeks when you are fighting a new server and everything is reset.

Have fun wasting your money every 2 weeks!

And since you are matched with others servers with similar population and win/loss % you will probably be stuck playing against other servers full of people who like to waste money so you will still have no advantage or disadvantage over them!

I disagree.  The more gold someone can get quickly, the faster they can gain the advantage and if they can keep accessing that gold without sending members out to constantly farm for it, they can keep the advantage much easier than someone who leveled slower and has to use members to farm more gold for equipment constantly.

I can live with the RMT exchange in pve (not happily, but I can live with it), but all trace of currency needs to be removed from WvWvW.  Make it so you can only buy siege engines with points earned directly doing something in pvp or pve, not with gold!

Does anybody actually KNOW that you can buy PvP supplies with gold yet? Has it been confirmed either way?

Anyway, something that alot of people are glossing over when banging on about bots, NOWHERE in that blog did it say you would be able to convert gems back to real money. Which means, at the most, bots would be able to farm cosmetic items for their account... it's unlikely Anet would make a system where people can convert gems back to money, since that would (as many have said) encourage botting and leave the game a little bit of a mess, since everyone and their dog will just be hoping to make some cash off it.

So yes, you will be able to BUY in game gold, from other players, with gems that they can then use to buy cosmetic/cash shop items. But it DOESN'T say they will be able to convert those gems back to real world cash to actually make money from playing/botting.

agree as well, which is why we will be spending our influence on PVE related stuff, what that leaves 4? trees in the guild if you take out the PVP tree?

If botters buy gems with gold when prices are low and sell for gold when prices go up, then sell that gold to players directly, they can indeed profit.

    You make a good point.

I will have a couple hours here and there to play. Those that play 8 hours a day will have an advantage over me. I don't want to cry thats not fair and impose a 10 hour / week limit.  This whole argument seems to be centered around that someone else out there is getting an advantage and thats not fair! Wonder if anyone will play the game to you know... enjoy the game.

You are either naive or really dumb. In most games the top wolrd pvp guilds always buy their way to the top or farm it to death.

The dif here is that while this may be noticeable at the beggining it will fade away it the end since the power plateu is really low.

I noticed the same thing. I am trying to see how bots will be undercutting gem sales if they cannot convert it back to cash. 3rd party site perhaps but then we are back to the solution of just buy it from arenanet.

One reason this should work for GW2 is that there really isn't anything you could spend unlimited gold on that would qualify as "buy to win".

The power curve on gear is shallow. There is no ever escalating gear grind after the level cap. There aren't even health/energy potions.

I was sceptical about PLEX in Eve, but it seems to have worked out, even though unlimited currency can indeed be converted into greater power. With GW2, I just don't see what one would buy to unbalance the game.

One interesting thing to note here is that the gold value of gems is set by the in game economy. If there is a glut of gems for sale, the value of said gems plummets and the balance shifts towards time spent in game vs. money spent out of game. If gems become too expensive, people will just pay for cash shop items directly, rather than looking to purchase gems in game with gold. It's a self correcting system.

You buy blueprints with gold. The actual item (golem, trebuchet etc) is then built with supplies that players need to collect on the WVW map and bring to the construction site. You can't buy the "supply" with gold, it's a resource that is built over time in the camps your team has claimed.

So the one time fee of probably 15$ is going to prevent you from playing a game you would otherwise enjoy... a game with no monthyl fee of 15$ that would pay for itself after 4 months when compared to a sub game?

(Note:  this is going to happen regardless of the currency system in game, it's just standard pvp guild behavior, but if in any way gems traded for gold quickens or eases the process, guilds will take advantage.)

Now my guild can buy siege engines and other pvp advantages with gold that I got, not by taking the time to farm it up as we leveled, but by trading it for gems bought with real money!  Jackpot!

This scenario is disgraceful.  If it's true that pvp equipment can be bought with gold, WvWvW will be all about wallet wars.

You are either naive or really dumb. In most games the top wolrd pvp guilds always buy their way to the top or farm it to death.

The dif here is that while this may be noticeable at the beggining it will fade away it the end since the power plateu is really low.

The difference is, I had actually hoped that the Buy to Play system would encourage ANet/NCSoft to harshly enforce perma-bans against RMT buyers as well as sellers, making this much less of a problem than it is in sub games.

    Maybe I am naive.

Doesn't mean I want to see pvp ruined.

Get stuck on a home server doing this? Move.

It will cost money to move and there will be a delay, which is as it should be.  However, if I have to pay money to move to a new home server because cheeseheads with too much money ruined pvp, I'm going to be pissed, as well I should be.  This should not be allowed to happen.  I'm willing to compromise on the pve, but about pvp?  For the first time in many months I'm considering not buying this game.

So the one time fee of probably 15$ is going to prevent you from playing a game you would otherwise enjoy... a game with no monthyl fee of 15$ that would pay for itself after 4 months when compared to a sub game?

Yes, because what is to guarantee that some up and coming guild on my new server won't start doing this right after I move?

If botters buy gems with gold when prices are low and sell for gold when prices go up, then sell that gold to players directly, they can indeed profit.

True, didn't think of it like that, although it's actually a BETTER situation than other games when it comes to combating bots, since they'd basically have to get consistently lucky with the economy in order to profit. Would they not just go for selling the gold they've farmed in the first place?

I don't mind wasting money to have fun playing games.

I don't mind a pvp game where gear is irrelevant.

I don't mind a cash shop instead of rmt gold sellers.

I don't mind that casual skilled players can gank no lifers that spend 24/7 playing.
