Whats the fun of playing MMO's and then at level 1 buying all the cool looking cosmetic stuffs and mounts from the ingame webstore?

Yesterday EQ went Free to Play on the new fresh Vox server., and after a few hours all low level characters where decked out with pure awesomeness from the store, maybe i am getting old, but what happened to the fun of starting to look better and cooler the higher in level you looked?

And its not only SOE, people are so spoiled that they start buying stuff from ingame webstores the minute they arive in the game.... but then this might actually be an indication of the number of people buying ingame gold from goldsellers. There is a hugereal life money market for ingame stuff, sadly it feels like another nail on the true MMO spirits coffin...

(not that i did not have fun in EQ, because it showed me how important downtime between fights is for the socialising aspect of MMO's)

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

You could simply ask yourself why you had the compulsion to buy stuff from a game's in-game store? Rather than starting what seems to be a pointless thread.

he never said he bought from the in game store. why would he ask himself why he did something which he didnt do? i dont get it tbh, i think you might have mistyped something or had a mindblank.

Why should players have to buy stuff from the store to look good early on?  Why not just make it part of character creation, like Champions Online does?

Well, one answer is that there is a wide spectrum of caring with regards to how good your character's gear looks. To some people, it doesn't matter at all. To others, it matters somewhat. And to some others, the look of their character's gear matters so much that they'll spend real money on it.

Games that have you pay for vanity items serve players at both ends of the spectrum. Players at the one far end are happy that other people will shell out money so that they can play a drab character absolutely free. Players at the far other end are happy to look so much better than the people around them. Only the people in the middle of the spectrum have a reason to complain.

It's a video game played on the internet.  People are having fun using their money to look cool.  Why would you care?  They're funding the game so you can play it without paying for the items.

The battle packages in EQ are extremely OP.

I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to buy Diablo III knowing it will have a cash shop (or cash trade, whatever it is). The idea alone irks me.

I love F2P as long as the items are cosmetic.

If you had played EQ's version of F2P you wouldn't ask that question.

Want to play with another race, pay up. - Want more bag space, pay up. - Want to play another class, pay up. - Want to play in all zones, pay up. - Want to use augments, pay up. - Want to change out a mercenary, pay up. - Want to use more than a certain amount of plat, pay up. - Want to buy abilities, pay up.

It goes on and on like that.

This isn't a traditional F2P system, at a certain point you are forced to pay money or you'll just end up dying over and over because you can't unlock enough abilities and need to carry more money and need to start using augments to survive.

Its called buy to play.  You want to play it you have to buy it.  Its not a F2P.

Also. OP is talking about the VOX server.  To fill in people who dont know. Its a special server.  You can sell anything, character with pvp points/gear/gold...ANYTHING on their exchange website for real money.

You could legally and quite literally buy a maxed out character in full gear with a bunch of gold (would probably cost several hundred dollars)

Also people can earn the money...however its a bit sketchy if they actually mail you a check or if you get credits ont heir site.

Its really a quite unique attempt at real exchanges in game for digatal property...only downside, like the op stated, you could drop $20 roll a fresh character and deck him out.  Not sure if vox is on the buy to play side of the game or the normal purchase side..

Basically its a server you go to if you are or have ever wanted to be a chinese gold farmer.
