That's weird, because Vgcharts says it fell out of the top 40 this week.

Also SWTOR is under licence, so would need higher numbers than other MMOs that do not, like Rift.

Really?  Who says?  I'm sure you wouldn't be taking something a competitor said and interpreting it in your own special way.

It is a known fact that Lucas Arts gets a hefty continuing chunk. That you don't know that speaks volumes.

If I remember correcty, the deal was 30% of revenue to LA after the cost to develop the game was recovered.

That's really useful information.  If it costs $40 to fill up my gas tank can you tell me how many miles I'll get out of it?

I see you are not very good at english and reading charts. 28th = TOP SELLING PC game for week ending Feb 4.

Course I gonna have a blast comparing these totals to GW2 when it arrives <wink>

  • SilaxSilax Member Posts: 250

He didn't.  It's 28th on the list because the list includes console games.  1-27 are console games, hence SWTOR is the current best selling PC game according to the stats by VGCharts.  Of course, VGCharts doesn't have access to all stats.

That is the most current numbers available on the global sales charts on Vgchartz.

Yes, SWTOR was the top selling PC game that week according to Vgchartz. What is so hard to understand about that?

Look, I look forward to GW2, but you people are way overhyping that game, just like SWTOR was overhyped.  The thing is no one outside of the MMO crowd even knows what GW2 is and it doesn't have a broad IP to attract people outside of the genre.  I am sure it will be fun, but do you, me and everyone else a favor and put things into perspective - GW2 is not going to be the best game of all time.  In reality, it will be incredibly lucky to get as many people as SWTOR has now and most likely won't.  That's not to say that it might not get more popular over time, but the odds are long.

Apart from Kingdoms of Amalur, it's also the only major PC title released since Christmas so no surprises there.

Oh I see, the problem is its the only PC game on the list, and its a two week lag in sales.

But what  I found interesting it sold 36K globally? Do you think that is a big number? Not even in the top 40 US.

Well Bunks, since VG only reports box sales, it's not terrible for an mmo.

EA said about 40% digital sales. That means they sold about 60k if the 40% holds true still.

That week was about 45 days after launch. 60k sales a month and a half later I'd not terrible. In fact, I doubt many other recent MMOs could match that.

Trouble is there are far more people leaving than there are subscribing.

That's a downward spiral only 6 weeks in, that in my opinion is un-recoverable with the current state of the game.

BTW, the charts are not based on box sales alone:

All sales estimates on VGChartz are arrived at via a number of proprietrary and ever-developing methods:

    • Passively polling end users to find out what games they are currently purchasing and playing

    • Polling retail partners to find out what games and hardware they are selling

    • Using statistical trend fitting and historical data for similar games

    • Studying resell prices to determine consumer demand and inventory levels

    • Consulting with publishers and manufacturers to find out how many units they are introducing into the channel

That's what I am thinking. Besides, Vgacharts own methodology doesnt exclude digital, it uses polling data as a subset. So when VGA said they sold 2 million on feb 3rd, that was exactly EA's tally. So it sounds like the 36k is pretty much all sales.

I just want you to keep posting. As I said, High comedy.

Would would mind posting a chart of  the rank on xfire for SWTOR.  You will need a flat horizontal line at number 5 for the past 28 days to help you out.

That will hardly yield much meaningful results at all , certainly not the point you are trying to make about games dropping since then. Try ie. 1st weeks monday or just go right at it with fix 7-day, 28-day intervals.

@Kimmboy: Lol Zorn. Gave up the "moderate gamer posthistory" - strategy and went back right at lashing out at Blizzards competition right after creation? A least the last time made it interesting enough to just keep watching your sock, untill you fell back to your routine. This one didnt last long, eh?

@pigavatarguy: Her some apples vs apples data you wanted to see and also some you probably dont want to see.

Weekly trends, thats pretty much enough Daily like some do here is too much of a hassle and hardly narrows the errormargin anyways and hardly offers much more interesting data I wouldnt already know either. Oh well pearls I say...

Thanks, that does say quite alot. If you have a mathmatical background you can see clearly that both WOW and SWTOR are losing players at a pretty equal rate (volume wise). Only SWTOR is also seeing a faster rate of decay in playtime(to be expected being the newer game). But as a baseline percentage, SWTOR is hemmoraging while WOW is mearly bleeding its player base. Either way, both are heading in the same direction. MMO's may be declining overall. But the lesser played one's seem to have a solid base.
